Neural network-enhanced investigation of ferroptosis and druggability in early-onset alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder which is multifactorial in nature. Some of its characteristics are slow cognitive decline, memory problems and behavioral changes. AD patient brains show a progressive synaptic toxicity, autophagy, neuroinflammation, excess generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), neuronal death and oxidative stress, which occurs due to disrupted metal homeostasis along with tau and amyloid-β protein deposition. Notably, lipid peroxidation, iron buildup and elevated oxidative stress in AD brains suggest a possible molecular connection between

XMP-Net: An XAI-Based Modified Xception Model for Recognizing Monkeypox and Other Skin Diseases.

This research introduces "XMP-Net," a modified Xception-based deep learning architecture constructed for the categorization of skin conditions, with a particular focus on identifying monkeypox. The study recognizes skin images of four categories: normal, chickenpox, measles, and monkeypox. To enhance interpretability and foster confidence in the model's predictions, Grad-CAM (gradient-weighted class activation mapping) and LIME (local interpretable model-agnostic explanations) were employed to illustrate the model's thinking manner. The model demonstrated impressive classification performance,

Application of artificial neural networks to solve differential equations in Zika virus dynamics with exponential kernel derivatives.

The Zika virus is a relatively new pathogen that has quickly become a major issue in virology. Infectious mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, particularly Aedes aegypti, spread the Zika virus in tropical and subtropical areas. Most bites from Aedes mosquitoes occur during the daytime. Dengue, chikungunya, and urban yellow fever are all spread by the same insects. Mathematical modeling has helped researchers better understand the mechanisms of Zika virus invasion and evaluate prospective management techniques. In this study, we suggest a unique approach to employing an Artificial Neural Network (ANN

Selecting Raman spectra filtering based on an exhaustive statistical approach for inline bioprocesses monitoring using Sf9 insect cells.

The spectral preprocessing step of data derived from Raman spectroscopy is important for chemometric models’ calibration, which allows real-time monitoring of pharmaceutical bioprocesses. Thus, the present work aimed to establish, with statistical criteria, the best combination of spectral filters for the biochemical monitoring of the baculovirus/Sf9 insect cell system. The production of rabies virus-like particles was used as a model. Combining moving window smoothing and offset baseline correction spectral filters demonstrated the highest efficacy in biochemically monitoring the baculovirus/

Impact of molecular multimodality on neural network models for prediction tasks related to drug discovery.

The number of unimodal molecule representation constantly increases, and researchers investigate how to combine them. Intuitively, multimodal representations may provide complementary information and combining them promises better performance. In this work, we systematically explore how combining multiple molecular modalities affects the performance of downstream prediction tasks, providing a baseline for informed decision making. Our study covers 7 molecular modalities and combines them using intermediate and late fusion, and 2 neural network architectures (with or without using knowledge gra

Time-Gated Raman Spectroscopy Combined with Deep Learning for Rapid, Label-Free Histopathological Discrimination of Gastric Cancer.

Gastric cancer is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive system, with a high mortality rate due to late-stage diagnosis. Current clinical diagnosis relies on endoscopic biopsy and histopathological analysis, which are highly dependent on pathologists' expertise and may lead to misdiagnoses. Therefore, there is an urgent need for molecular, digital, and intelligent real-time diagnostic methods. In this study, accurate gastric cancer tissue diagnosis was carried out by integrating time-gated Raman spectroscopy (TG-Raman) with deep learning. The TG-Raman effectively suppresses a

Real-Time Estimation of Intended Lower-Limb Motion for Assist Robots.

Motion assist robots have been studied to assist human motion for elderly, disabled, injured persons. The motion assist robots can be classified into two types: wearable robots which are directly attached to the user's body and external robots which assist the user's motion from the outside of the user. It is important for those robots to estimate motion intention of users in real-time to assist their daily motion effectively. This paper presents a method to estimate human lower-limb motion intention and its motion phase in real-time for the motion assist robots. By detecting motion phase in a

A Framework to Replace Measured Ground Reaction Forces with ANN-predicted ones for Joint Load Estimation in OpenSim.

This study integrates an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) with musculoskeletal (MSK) modeling in OpenSim to predict lower-limb joint reaction forces (JRFs). The ANN was trained, in a previous study, to predict ground reaction forces (GRFs) using ankle position data during walking. This model was used to predict GRFs of 20 unseen subjects (10 male and 10 females) and predicted GRFs were evaluated against experimentally measured GRFs in three directions: antero-posterior (AP), medio-lateral (ML), and proximo-distal (vertical). OpenSim was used to compute JRFs at the hip, knee, and ankle joints in

WaveNet-SF: A hybrid network for retinal disease detection based on wavelet transform in spatial-frequency domain.

Retinal diseases are a leading cause of vision impairment and blindness, with timely diagnosis being critical for effective treatment. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has become a standard imaging modality for retinal disease diagnosis, but OCT images often suffer from issues such as speckle noise, complex lesion shapes, and varying lesion sizes, making interpretation challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel model, WaveNet-SF, to enhance retinal disease detection by integrating the spatial-domain and frequency-domain learning. The framework utilizes wavelet transforms to decompose OCT

Super-recognizers sample visual information of superior computational value for facial recognition.

Super-recognizers-individuals with exceptionally high face recognition abilities-are a key exemplar of biological visual expertise. Recent eye-tracking evidence suggests that their expertise may be driven by exploratory viewing behaviour during learning, but it remains unclear whether this perceptual sampling is functional for face identity processing. Here, we develop a novel approach to quantify the computational value of face information samples and test the utility of information sampling in super-recognizers. Using measurements of eye gaze behaviour, we reconstructed the retinal informati

Directed Vectors for Generation of Independent Subspaces in the Bio-inpired Networks.

Machine learning, deep learning and neural networks are extensively developed in many fields, with neural networks playing an important role in a wide variety of applications. However, a sufficient explanation of the structure and functionality of complex and deep neural networks is still needed. In this paper, it is shown that bio-inspired networks are useful for the explanation of network functions. First, the asymmetric network is created based on the biological retinal networks. Second, the classification performance of the asymmetric network is compared to that of the symmetric networks.

An automated hip fracture detection, classification system on pelvic radiographs and comparison with 35 clinicians.

Accurate diagnosis of orthopedic injuries, especially pelvic and hip fractures, is vital in trauma management. While pelvic radiographs (PXRs) are widely used, misdiagnosis is common. This study proposes an automated system that uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to detect potential fracture areas and predict fracture conditions, aiming to outperform traditional object detection-based systems. We developed two deep learning models for hip fracture detection and prediction, trained on PXRs from three hospitals. The first model utilized automated hip area detection, cropping, and classifi

Synergistic Pathways of Modulation Enable Robust Task Packing Within Neural Dynamics.

Understanding how brain networks learn and manage multiple tasks simultaneously is of interest in both neuroscience and artificial intelligence. In this regard, a recent research thread in theoretical neuroscience has focused on how recurrent neural network models and their internal dynamics enact multitask learning. To manage different tasks requires a mechanism to convey information about task identity or context into the model, which from a biological perspective may involve mechanisms of neuromodulation. In this study, we use recurrent network models to probe the distinctions between two f
