The neurobiology of self face recognition among depressed adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Depression is linked to alterations in both emotion and self-processing. The current study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess neural activation in healthy and depressed youth to a novel task that combined emotion processing with self-face recognition. METHODS: An fMRI study involving 81 adolescents (50.6% females; Mage=14.61, SD=1.65) comprised of depressed (DEP, n=43), and healthy controls (HC, n=38). Participants completed a clinical interview and self-report measures during an initial assessment. In the scanner, adolescents completed a face recognition t

Perimetric point density and detection of glaucomatous visual field loss.

Eighty-three patients with high risk ocular hypertension were followed between 9 and 120 months with computerized threshold perimetry every three months in a prospective clinical study. Twenty eyes developed definite glaucomatous visual field defects. Analysis of these cases showed that definite field loss was preceded by increased variability of measured threshold values. Already at this early stage up to the time when a definite diagnosis of field loss first could be made, was, in all eyes, the disturbed area large enough to cover several test locations in the standard test point pattern use

Cognitive levels of performance account for hemispheric lateralisation effects in dyslexic and normally reading children.

Recent theories of developmental dyslexia explain reading deficits in terms of deficient phonological awareness, attention, visual and auditory processing, or automaticity. Since dyslexia has a neurobiological basis, the question arises how the reader's proficiency in these cognitive variables affects the brain regions involved in visual word recognition. This question was addressed in two fMRI experiments with 19 normally reading children (Experiment 1) and 19 children with dyslexia (Experiment 2). First, reading-specific brain activation was assessed by contrasting the BOLD signal for readin

The Weighting of Cues to Upright Following Stroke With and Without a History of Pushing.

OBJECTIVE: Perceived upright depends on three main factors: vision, graviception, and the internal representation of the long axis of the body. We assessed the relative contributions of these factors in individuals with sub-acute and chronic stroke and controls using a novel tool; the Oriented Character Recognition Test (OCHART). We also considered whether individuals who displayed active pushing or had a history of pushing behaviours had different weightings than those with no signs of pushing. METHOD: Three participants experienced a stroke 6 months prior: eight with a history of pushing. I

Affective and Cognitive Vulnerability Under Chronic Stress: Insights From Patients With Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy and Caregivers.

BACKGROUND: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is a chronic stress condition characterized by affective and cognitive deficits. This study analyzed differences in affective and cognitive functioning between patients with TLE and another chronically stressed population - caregivers of patients with epilepsy - as well as the relationships between affective and cognitive outcomes. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 40 adults (20 with left TLE and 20 caregivers; mean age 48.43 ± 8.86 years) underwent a neuropsychological assessment evaluating affectivity, attention, executive function, language, a

Age differences in incidental learning of emotional information.

Previous research has consistently shown an age-related positivity effect, in which older adults show relatively less negativity and/or relatively greater positivity in memory compared with younger adults. This study examined age-related differences in incidental learning of emotional stimuli, specifically examining how emotional valence influences memory within the framework of the visual statistical learning task. Participants across two age groups (young and older adults) viewed streams of object images with varying emotional valences (negative, positive, neutral) organized into triplets, u

Adding Meaning to Memories: How Parietal Cortex Combines Semantic Content with Episodic Experience.

Neuroimaging studies of human memory have consistently found that univariate responses in parietal cortex track episodic experience with stimuli (whether stimuli are 'old' or 'new'). More recently, pattern-based fMRI studies have shown that parietal cortex also carries information about the semantic content of remembered experiences. However, it is not well understood how memory-based and content-based signals are integrated within parietal cortex. Here, in humans (males and females), we used voxel-wise encoding models and a recognition memory task to predict the fMRI activity patterns evoked

Portraits of Pioneering Scientists in Dermatology: Preserving the Visual History of the Specialty.

Dermatology has long been one of the most visual of the medical specialties, built on observation, illustration, and pattern recognition. While the scientific achievements of its pioneers are well documented, the portraits, engravings, silhouettes, sculptures, medals, and early photographs that preserved their likenesses have received comparatively little attention. These images form a historical archive in their own right, reflecting not only the physicians themselves but the artistic conventions, technical means, and professional culture of their era. This review traces the history of dermat

Optical Fiber Vibration Signal Identification Method Based on Improved YOLOv4.

In the traditional peripheral-security-early-warning system, the endpoint detection and pattern recognition of the signals generated by the distributed optical fiber vibration sensors is completed step-by-step and in an orderly manner. The method by which these two processes may be placed end-to-end in a network model and processed simultaneously to improve work efficiency has increasingly become the focus of research. In this paper, the target detection algorithm combines the endpoint-detection and pattern-recognition processes of the vibration signal, which can not only quickly locate the st

Visual objects and their colors.

The ventral temporal cortex hosts key regions for the high-level visual processing of object shape and color. These areas represent nodes of large-scale neural circuits dedicated to object recognition. In the language-dominant hemisphere, some of these regions communicate with the language systems; by assigning verbal labels to percepts, these circuits speedup stimulus categorization, and permit fast and accurate interindividual communication. By impairing the functioning of these circuits, neurological damage may provoke disabling disorders of the processing of visual objects and of their col

Cue-invariant activation in object-related areas of the human occipital lobe.

The extent to which primary visual cues such as motion or luminance are segregated in different cortical areas is a subject of controversy. To address this issue, we examined cortical activation in the human occipital lobe using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while subjects performed a fixed visual task, object recognition, using three different primary visual cues: motion, texture, or luminance contrast. In the first experiment, a region located on the lateral aspect of the occipital lobe (LO complex) was preferentially activated in all 11 subjects both by luminance and motion-d

Never stop wondering: When cells become PAP-art on the slides.

The project named Victoria's cells was created to train health care personnel, especially in low-income countries. This innovative approach is designed to associate benign and malignant cellular images and/or patterns with a range of shapes and color shades to evoke animals, common objects, and colorful aquariums. The project makes use of familiar images to capture the viewer's interest as an aid for cytological interpretation. Cervicovaginal cytology is processed with conventional and liquid-based cytology. The images are visually compelling to highlight the importance of studying cells and t

Sleep Spindle Characteristics and Relationship with Memory Ability in Patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) causes intermittent hypoxia and sleep disruption in the brain, resulting in cognitive dysfunction, but its pathogenesis is unclear. The sleep spindle wave is a transient neural event involved in sleep memory consolidation and synaptic plasticity. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of sleep spindle activity and its relationship with memory ability in patients with OSAS. A total of 119 patients, who were divided into the OSAS group (n = 59, AHI ≥ 15) and control group (n = 60, AHI < 15) according to the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI), were enr

Distinct mechanisms of form-from-motion perception in human extrastriate cortex.

The exquisite sensitivity of the human visual system to form-from-motion (FfM) cues is well documented. However, identifying the neural correlates of this sensitivity has proven difficult, particularly determining the respective contributions of different motion areas in extrastriate visual cortex. Here we measured visual FfM perception and more elementary visual motion (VM) perception in a group of 32 patients suffering from acute posterior brain damage, and performed MRI-based lesion analysis. Our results suggest that severe FfM perception deficits without an associated deficit of VM percept

Dyslexia and visual perception: is there a relation?

Opinions differ concerning the relation between dyslexia and visual perception. In this pilot study we addressed this question by analyzing the results of visual perceptual testing on 19 elementary grade subjects diagnosed as having dyseidesia, one type of dyslexia that manifests as problems with sight-word recognition. The subjects, who have different degrees of severity of dyseidesia, were compared with 11 subjects tested as nondyslexic, but with reading problems. The Dyslexia Determination Test (DDT) and the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills (TVPS) were given to all subjects. Both multivaria

Trigonelline mitigates lipopolysaccharide-induced learning and memory impairment in the rat due to its anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effect.

Brain inflammation is associated with cognitive dysfunction, especially in elderly. Trigonelline is a plant alkaloid and a major component of coffee and fenugreek with anti-diabetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In this study, the beneficial effect of trigonelline against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cognitive decline was assessed in the rat. LPS was injected i.p. at a dose of 500 μg/kg to induce neuroinflammation and trigonelline was administered p.o. at doses of 20, 40, or 80 mg/kg/day 1 h after LPS that continued for one week. Trigonelline-treated LPS-cha

Not all visual symmetry is equal: Partially distinct neural bases for vertical and horizontal symmetry.

Visual mirror symmetry plays an important role in visual perception in both human and animal vision; its importance is reflected in the fact that it can be extracted automatically during early stages of visual processing. However, how this extraction is implemented at the cortical level remains an open question. Given the importance of symmetry in visual perception, one possibility is that there is a network which extracts all types of symmetry irrespective of axis of orientation; alternatively, symmetry along different axes might be encoded by different brain regions, implying that there is n

A functional magnetic resonance imaging investigation of theory of mind impairments in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy.

Although patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) are known to have theory of mind (ToM) impairments, the latter's neural functional bases have yet to be explored. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to gain insights into the neural dysfunction associated with ToM impairments in patients with mTLE. Twenty-five patients (12 and 13 with right and left mTLE, respectively) and 25 healthy controls performed the "animated shapes" task during fMRI. This complex ToM task requires both explicit reasoning about mental states and implicit processing of information on biological
