Ceratonia siliqua pods (Carob) methanol extract alleviates doxorubicin-induced nephrotoxicity via antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic pathways in rats.

Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anti-neoplastic therapy, but its use is limited by its deleterious toxic effects including nephrotoxicity and cardiotoxicity. This work aimed at assessing the potential protective effect of Ceratonia siliqua methanol extract (CME) on DOX-induced nephrotoxicity in 5 groups of Wistar rats. Nephrotoxicity was induced experimentally by intraperitoneal (IP) injection of DOX (15 mg/kg). DOX increased serum creatinine, urea, sodium, and potassium levels. It elevated MDA levels in the renal tissue but decreased the concentration of GSH and the activity of GST, CAT, and SOD. Mea

Addressing global food insecurity: Soil-applied zinc oxide nanoparticles promote yield attributes and seed nutrient quality in Glycine max L.

Consumed globally, oilseeds serve as a major source of proteins and oils in human and animal nutrition, supporting global food security. Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient critical for oil and protein synthesis in plants. In this study, we synthesized three distinct sized zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO: 38 nm = S [small], 59 nm = M [medium], and > 500 nm = L [large], and assessed the potential effects of varied particle sizes and concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200, and 500 mg/kg-soil) on seed yield attributes, nutrient quality and oil and protein yield in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown for a

Cooperative Bond Activation and Catalytic CO2 Functionalization with a Geometrically Constrained Bis(silylene)-Stabilized Borylene.

Metal-ligand cooperativity has emerged as an important strategy to tune the reactivity of transition-metal complexes for the catalysis and activation of small molecules. Studies of main-group compounds, however, are scarce. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and reactivity of a geometrically constrained bis(silylene)-stabilized borylene. The one-pot reaction of [(SiNSi)Li(OEt2)] (SiNSi = 4,5-bis(silylene)-2,7,9,9-tetramethyl-9H-acridin-10-ide) with 1 equiv of [BBr3(SMe2)] in toluene at room temperature followed by reduction with 2 equiv of potassium graphite (KC8) lead

Antioxidant potential of the diet in Italian children with food allergies.

A reduced fruit and vegetable consumption, which implies a decreased intake of antioxidant compounds, seems to play a role in allergic diseases onset. Data on the antioxidant capacity of diet in children with food allergies, who are on an avoidance diet, are still lacking. This pilot study aims to assess the antioxidant potential of diet in Italian children with food allergies, compared to healthy children, using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) method. 95 children (54 with confirmed food allergies and 41 controls), with a median age of 7.8 years, were enrolled and underwent a nut

Prospects of microgreens as budding living functional food: Breeding and biofortification through OMICS and other approaches for nutritional security.

Nutrient deficiency has resulted in impaired growth and development of the population globally. Microgreens are considered immature greens (required light for photosynthesis and growing medium) and developed from the seeds of vegetables, legumes, herbs, and cereals. These are considered "living superfood/functional food" due to the presence of chlorophyll, beta carotene, lutein, and minerals like magnesium (Mg), Potassium (K), Phosphorus (P), and Calcium (Ca). Microgreens are rich at the nutritional level and contain several phytoactive compounds (carotenoids, phenols, glucosinolates, polyster

Vegetation restoration facilitates belowground microbial network complexity and recalcitrant soil organic carbon storage in southwest China karst region.

Soil organic carbon (SOC) is an important component of soil ecosystems, and soils are a hotbed of microorganisms playing critical roles in soil functions and ecosystem services. Understanding the interaction between SOC and soil microbial community is of paramount significance in predicting the C fate in soils following vegetation restoration. In this study, high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS genes combined with 13C NMR spectroscopy analysis were applied to characterize SOC chemical compounds and elucidate associated soil microbial community. Our results indicated that the contents

Plant mineral nutrition and disease resistance: A significant linkage for sustainable crop protection.

Complete and balanced nutrition has always been the first line of plant defense due to the direct involvement of mineral elements in plant protection. Mineral elements affect plant health directly by modulating the activity of redox enzymes or improving the plant vigor indirectly by altering root exudates, and changing microflora population dynamics, rhizosphere soil nutrient content, pH fluctuation, lignin deposition, and phytoalexin biosynthesis. Nitrogen (N) is one of the most important macronutrients having a significant impact on the host-pathogen axis. N negatively affects the plant's ph

Dynein Coordinates β2-Adrenoceptor-Mediated Relaxation in Normotensive and Hypertensive Rat Mesenteric Arteries.

BACKGROUND: The voltage-gated potassium channel (Kv)7.4 and Kv7.5 channels contribute to the β-adrenoceptor-mediated vasodilatation. In arteries from hypertensive rodents, the Kv7.4 channel is downregulated and function attenuated, which contributes to the reduced β-adrenoceptor-mediated vasodilatation observed in these arteries. Recently, we showed that disruption of the microtubule network, with colchicine, or inhibition of the microtubule motor protein, dynein, with ciliobrevin D, enhanced the membrane abundance and function of Kv7.4 channels in rat mesenteric arteries. This study aimed to

Nephroprotective role of Echinacea purpurea against potassium dichromate-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis in rats.

Environmental and occupational exposure to chromium compounds, especially hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], is widely recognized as a potential nephrotoxic in humans and animals. Its toxicity is associated with the overproduction of free radicals, which induces oxidative damage. Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench is an herbaceous perennial plant rich in phenolic components and frequently used for its medicinal benefits. The current work evaluated the effectiveness of E. purpurea (EP) against oxidative stress and nephrotoxicity induced by potassium dichromate in male rats. Male Wistar rats were divided

Pro-Oxidative Effect of KIO3 and Protective Effect of Melatonin in the Thyroid-Comparison to Other Tissues.

Not only iodine deficiency, but also its excess may contribute to thyroid cancer. Potassium iodate (KIO3), which is broadly used in the salt iodization program, can increase oxidative damage to membrane lipids (lipid peroxidation, LPO) under experimental conditions, with the strongest damaging effect at KIO3 concentration of ~10 mM (corresponding to physiological iodine concentration in the thyroid). Melatonin is an effective antioxidant, which protects against KIO3-induced LPO in the thyroid. This study aimed to compare the protective effects of melatonin, used in the highest achievable in vi

Loop Diuretics Inhibit Ischemia-Induced Intracellular Ca2+ Overload in Neurons via the Inhibition of Voltage-Gated Ca2+ and Na+ Channels.

One consequence of ischemic stroke is disruption of intracellular ionic homeostasis. Intracellular overload of both Na+ and Ca2+ has been linked to neuronal death in this pathophysiological state. The etiology of ionic imbalances resulting from stroke-induced ischemia and acidosis includes the dysregulation of multiple plasma membrane transport proteins, such as increased activity of sodium-potassium-chloride cotransporter-1 (NKCC-1). Experiments using NKCC1 antagonists, bumetanide (BMN) and ethacrynic acid (EA), were carried out to determine if inhibition of this cotransporter affects Na+ and

Role of endogenous digitalis-like factors in the clinical manifestations of severe preeclampsia: a sytematic review.

Endogenous digitalis-like factor(s), originally proposed as a vasoconstrictor natriuretic hormone, was discovered in fetal and neonatal blood accidentally because it cross-reacts with antidigoxin antibodies (ADAs). Early studies using immunoassays with ADA identified the digoxin-like immuno-reactive factor(s) (EDLF) in maternal blood as well, and suggested it originated in the feto-placental unit. Mammalian digoxin-like factors have recently been identified as at least two classes of steroid compounds, plant derived ouabain (O), and several toad derived bufodienolides, most prominent being mar

1-[1-Hexyl-6-(methyloxy)-1H-indazol-3-yl]-2-methyl-1-propanone, a potent and highly selective small molecule blocker of the large-conductance voltage-gated and calcium-dependent K+ channel.

The large-conductance voltage-gated and calcium-dependent K(+) (BK) channels are widely distributed and play important physiological roles. Commonly used BK channel inhibitors are peptide toxins that are isolated from scorpion venoms. A high-affinity, nonpeptide, synthesized BK channel blocker with selectivity against other ion channels has not been reported. We prepared several compounds from a published patent application (Doherty et al., 2004) and identified 1-[1-hexyl-6-(methyloxy)-1H-indazol-3-yl]-2-methyl-1-propanone (HMIMP) as a potent and selective BK channel blocker. The patch-clamp t
