Child sexual abuse and the pathophysiology of suicide in adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: Child sexual abuse (CSA) is widespread and is associated with various psychopathologies, including Axis I and II disorders, maladaptive and impulsive behaviors, and suicidal behavior in adolescence and adults. The pathophysiology of this association is not well understood; however, it is clear that suicidal behavior in individuals with a history of CSA is a significant social and medical problem that warrants further investigation. METHODS: An electronic search of the major behavioral science databases (limited to the most recent studies in the last 20 years) was conducted to retr

Maternal buspirone protects against the adverse effects of in utero stress on emotional and pain-related behaviors in offspring.

Previous investigations from our laboratory demonstrated that prenatal stress exacerbates inflammatory pain-related behavior in adult rats and that fetal serotonin (5-HT) is involved in this phenomenon. In the present study we test the hypothesis that injections of buspirone, a 5-HT1A agonist, to rat dams before restraint stress during the last week of pregnancy (between pregnant days 15 and 20) can improve the characteristics of emotional and inflammatory pain-related behaviors in the adult offspring. Buspirone was injected to dams between the 9 and 20 days of pregnancy, during restraint stre

Gambling During the COVID-19 Crisis - A Cause for Concern.

: The COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to worsen mental health problems in the general population, including increasing engagement in addictive behaviors. Here, we describe observations suggesting that the current crisis and its sequelae may worsen problem gambling. The current pandemic may impact financial and psychological well-being due to social isolation during spatial distancing, and these stressors in conjunction with substantial changes in gambling markets (land-based, online) during the pandemic may significantly influence gambling behaviors. This situation calls for rapid research

Sotos syndrome in two children from India.

Sotos syndrome is one of the overgrowth syndromes, and can present with intellectual disability, behavioral problems and tall stature. In some cases, seizures, pectus deformity, cardiac and renal anomalies may be identified. Here we report two Indian children with Sotos syndrome whose initial presentation was macrocephaly and behavioral problems, respectively. The pathogenic variants in NSD1 gene were confirmed by next generation sequencing. The gene variants in the two children, one male and one female; were NSD1: c.2362C>T and NSD1: c.5474dup, respectively, leading to premature termination o

Problem-solving education to prevent depression among low-income mothers of preterm infants: a randomized controlled pilot trial.

We sought to assess the feasibility and document key study processes of a problem-solving intervention to prevent depression among low-income mothers of preterm infants. A randomized controlled pilot trial (n = 50) of problem-solving education (PSE) was conducted. We assessed intervention provider training and fidelity; recruitment and retention of subjects; intervention acceptability; and investigators' ability to conduct monthly outcome assessments, from which we could obtain empirical estimates of depression symptoms, stress, and functioning over 6 months. Four of four bachelor-level provid

The protective role of religiosity against problem gambling: findings from a five-year prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Little research has examined the potential protective influence of religiosity against problem gambling; a common addictive behavior, and one with a host of associated negative health and social outcomes. The aims of this study were to examine (1) the potential longitudinal association between religiosity and problem gambling among adults and (2) the potential moderating role of gender on this association. METHODS: Data were from five waves of the Quinte Longitudinal Study (QLS), between 2006 and 2010. Participants were Canadian adults from Belleville, Ontario, Canada (n = 4121).

The Landscape of Randomized Controlled Trials for Behavioral Health-Focused Psychosocial Interventions for Youth in the Juvenile Legal System: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Youth in the juvenile legal system (JLS) exhibit high rates of behavioral health concerns and the development and evaluation of effective interventions is essential. The present study provided a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of community-based psychosocial interventions focused on behavioral health among JLS-involved youth. This review sought to characterize the number of studies conducted, types of interventions tested, and the frequency of different types of primary outcomes (e.g., conduct problems, internalizing concerns). METHOD: A systematic search o

Too Much Heat May Make You Smoke.

BACKGROUND: The rising concerns surrounding climate change have drawn attention to its potential impact on health, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children and older adults. Despite extensive research on health consequences, limited studies have explored the connection between extreme heat exposure and tobacco use initiation among adolescents in the United States. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the relationship between extreme heat exposure and the initiation of tobacco use in adolescents, using data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study. It also evaluates

Further Understanding the Correlations Between Sexting and Mental Health: Considerations for Sex and Sexual Identity.

We explored how sexting (no sexting, sent only, received only, reciprocal) was associated with depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and compulsive sexual behaviors across sex and sexual identity groups. We also examined how substance use predicted sexting classifications. Data came from 2,160 college students living in the United States. Results indicated that 76.6 percent of the sample had engaged in sexting (primarily reciprocal). Participants who had engaged in sexting generally evidenced higher depression, anxiety, sleep problems, and compulsive sexual behaviors. Effect sizes were largest

Renormalization group analysis of the Anderson model on random regular graphs.

We present a renormalization group (RG) analysis of the problem of Anderson localization on a random regular graph (RRG) which generalizes the RG of Abrahams, Anderson, Licciardello, and Ramakrishnan to infinite-dimensional graphs. The RG equations necessarily involve two parameters (one being the changing connectivity of subtrees), but we show that the one-parameter scaling hypothesis is recovered for sufficiently large system sizes for both eigenstates and spectrum observables. We also explain the nonmonotonic behavior of dynamical and spectral quantities as a function of the system size for

Rapid adsorption of directional cellulose nanofibers/3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane/polyethyleneimine aerogels on microplastics in water.

Currently, cellulose-based aerogel materials are a hot topic owing to their high specific surface area and high porosity, as well as the green, degradable and biocompatible characteristics of cellulosic materials. Modification of cellulose to enhance the adsorption properties of cellulose-based aerogels has important research significance in solving the problem of water body pollution. In this paper, cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were modified with polyethyleneimine (PEI), and modified aerogels with directional structures were prepared by a simple reaction and freeze-drying method. The adsorptio

Family-based association analysis of serotonin genes in pathological gambling disorder: evidence of vulnerability risk in the 5HT-2A receptor gene.

Pathological gambling (PG) has become a growing public health problem in many countries around the world. PG is an impulse control disorder and its behavior and psychopathology present similarities with substance abuse disorders. Evidence from twin studies supports a significant genetic predisposition to PG, but the precise genetic loci still remain unclear. The present study investigates the allele and genotype distribution of polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter, serotonin receptor 1B and 2A genes in 140 sib-pairs discordant for the diagnosis of PG. A significant association of the C/C

Peer influence in children and adolescents: crossing the bridge from developmental to intervention science.

Considerable evidence supports the hypothesis that peer relationships influence the growth of problem behavior in youth. Developmental research consistently documents the high levels of covariation between peer and youth deviance, even controlling for selection effects. Ironically, the most common public interventions for deviant youth involve segregation from mainstream peers and aggregation into settings with other deviant youth. Developmental research on peer influence suggests that desired positive effects of group interventions in education, mental health, juvenile justice, and community …

Naming, the formation of stimulus classes, and applied behavior analysis.

The methods used in Sidman's original studies on equivalence classes provide a framework for analyzing functional verbal behavior. Sidman and others have shown how teaching receptive, name-referent matching may produce rudimentary oral reading and word comprehension skills. Eikeseth and Smith (1992) have extended these findings by showing that children with autism may acquire equivalence classes after learning to supply a common oral name to each stimulus in a potential class. A stimulus class analysis suggests ways to examine (a) the problem of programming generalization from teaching situati

Behavior and academic achievement in hyperactive subgroups and learning-disabled boys. A six-year follow-up.

Hyperactive boys with and without conduct disorder and a contrast group of boys with specific reading disability were compared on behavior ratings and academic achievement six years after their initial examination to clarify the relationship between hyperactivity and learning disability. Both hyperactive groups were rated as problematic on dimensions of overactivity, inattention, and impulsivity. Hyperactive boys who had earlier been undersocialized and aggressive continued to have problems with aggression, while the "pure" hyperactive boys did not. Achievement measures showed performance to b

Applying General Strain Theory to the Relationship Between Strain from Another Person's Gambling Behavior and Gambling Disorder.

Prior research has identified a host of factors that increase the likelihood that an individual will develop problem gambling, clinically diagnosed as Gambling Disorder (GD), most of which would be identified by criminologists as "strains" under the framework of General Strain Theory (GST). This study utilizes propositions from GST to determine whether strain from another person's gambling may be related to why people develop GD and whether gender is a moderating factor in this relationship. Secondary data is analyzed to assess levels of strain individuals experience from another person's gamb

Prevalence and correlates of gambling among 16 to 19-year-old adolescents in Norway.

There is evidence that young people are at high risk of developing gambling disorders. The prevalence and correlates of gambling among youth therefore merit closer study. During spring 2004, a sample of 1,351 boys and girls (aged 16-19 years) from 151 high-school classes (clusters) participated in an internet survey about gambling. The response rate was 69.8%. The instruments used in the survey were the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and the Massachusetts Adolescent Gambling Screen, in addition to questions about demography.
