The epidemiology of Salmonella dublin infection in a dairy herd. I. Excretion and persistence of the organism.

This paper describes the epidemiologically relevant events that took place in a dairy herd infected by Salmonella dublin. The evidence presented indicates that it may be possible to eliminate infection from the farm and that residual infection or persistent excretion are uncommon. In two animals infection persisted, in one instance in the tonsil and in the other in the gall bladder. In this latter case the infection remained from the neonatal period until adulthood. It is possible that both these animals are relevant in a more general context and are indicative of the source of infection in ou

Andes Virus - A Clinical Review.

Andes virus (ANDV) is the sole orthohantavirus with documented human-to-human transmission. We summarize the epidemiology and clinical features of ANDV infection and review best practices in clinical management, as based on published expert consensus guidelines, field experience, and clinical trials. We also evaluate currently available and investigational treatments (including the use of antiviral agents), assess emerging monoclonal antibody therapies, and outline prospects for vaccine development. Finally, we discuss important infection prevention and control measures.

Prevalence and genomic insights into Yersinia enterocolitica in Southeastern China (2008-2022).

Yersinia enterocolitica is a significant foodborne pathogen causing gastrointestinal illnesses worldwide. This study investigates the prevalence and genomic characteristics of Y. enterocolitica to assess potential health risks in southeastern China, a region lacking mandatory yersiniosis monitoring. From 2939 samples collected between 2008 and 2022, 105 isolates were recovered. The highest prevalence was found in rodents (8.1%), followed by retail meats (7.1%), other foods (3.7%), and human clinical cases (0.8%). In addition to meats and rodents, ready-to-eat salads, seafood, and frozen food p

Novel Orthohantavirus Associated with Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome in Northern Argentina.

In this work, we performed the genetic characterization of a new variant of orthohantavirus associated with a fatal case of hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, outside the known endemic region, in northwestern Argentina. We first confirmed an orthohantavirus infection by ELISA, testing for the detection of IgM and IgG antibodies. Then, we extracted RNA from 100 microliters of serum, the only sample available, followed by RT-PCR. The amplicons were sequenced using Sanger and next-generation sequencing technology. We obtained partial sequences of 1253 bp, 799 bp and 1675 bp from the S-, M- and L-segm

Identification and Characterization of Orientia chuto in Trombiculid Chigger Mites Collected from Wild Rodents in Kenya.

We present data that concurs with the reported geographical expansion of scrub typhus outside the "Tsutsugamushi Triangle" and addition of Orientia chuto as a second species in the Orientia genus. Wild rodents were caught in Marigat, Baringo County, Kenya, and ectoparasites, including chiggers, were recovered. Rodent and chigger species were identified by taxonomic features. DNA was extracted from the chiggers and used to amplify and/or sequence the 47-kDa high temperature transmembrane protein (TSA47), the 56-kDa type-specific antigen (TSA56), and the 16S rRNA (rrs) Orientia genes. The main r

Ixodes persulcatus Ticks as Vectors for the Babesia microti U.S. Lineage in Japan.

UNLABELLED: The U.S. lineage, one of the major clades in the Babesia microti group, is known as a causal agent of human babesiosis mostly in the northeastern and upper midwestern United States. This lineage, however, also is distributed throughout the temperate zone of Eurasia with several reported human cases, although convincing evidence of the identity of the specific vector(s) in this area is lacking. Here, the goal was to demonstrate the presence of infectious parasites directly in salivary glands of Ixodes persulcatus, from which U.S. lineage genetic sequences have been detected in Asia,

First complete genomic characterization of two tick-borne encephalitis virus isolates obtained from wild rodents in South Korea.

We determined for the first time the complete genome sequences of two Korean strains of the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), designated KrM 93 and KrM 213, isolated from the lung tissues of wild rodents in 2006. The genomes are 11,097 nucleotides (nt) in length and consist of a 132 nt 5'-noncoding region (NCR), a 10,245 nt open reading frame (ORF) containing 10 viral protein-coding regions (3,415 amino acids), and a 720 nt 3'-NCR. Compared with the 31 fully sequenced TBEV strains currently available, KrM 93 and KrM 213 show genomic nucleotide (and deduced amino acid) sequence divergences

Multilocus sequence typing implicates rodents as the main reservoir host of human-pathogenic Borrelia garinii in Japan.

Multilocus sequence typing of Borrelia garinii isolates from humans and comparison with rodent and tick isolates were performed. Fifty-nine isolates were divided into two phylogenetic groups, and an association was detected between clinical and rodent isolates, suggesting that, in Japan, human-pathogenic B. garinii comes from rodents via ticks.

Behavioral analysis of motor and non-motor symptoms in rodent models of Parkinson's disease.

Alongside the classical motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms are increasingly recognised to play a major role in the disability associated with Parkinson's disease in humans. Animal models based on experimental depletion of forebrain dopamine have traditionally focussed on the simple and easy to measure motor impairments, and they reproduce well the bradykinesia, rigidity and impairments in the initiation and sequencing of voluntary goal-directed movement. However, a more comprehensive analysis is now urgently required. In this chapter we summarise the predominant unilateral and bilateral dopami

Genome dynamics of Bartonella grahamii in micro-populations of woodland rodents.

BACKGROUND: Rodents represent a high-risk reservoir for the emergence of new human pathogens. The recent completion of the 2.3 Mb genome of Bartonella grahamii, one of the most prevalent blood-borne bacteria in wild rodents, revealed a higher abundance of genes for host-cell interaction systems than in the genomes of closely related human pathogens. The sequence variability within the global B. grahamii population was recently investigated by multi locus sequence typing, but no study on the variability of putative host-cell interaction systems has been performed. RESULTS: To study the populat

Poor housing quality increases risk of rodent infestation and Lassa fever in refugee camps of Sierra Leone.

Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic fever endemic in parts of West Africa, is a severe febrile illness transmitted to humans by the rodent Mastomys natalensis. To determine risk of Lassa fever in households in Sierra Leonean refugee camps, we analyzed the spatial relationships between households with a Lassa case and focal locations of potential rodent habitats. Quality and hygiene factors of households were assessed to determine possible risk factors for household rodent infestation and occurrence of Lassa fever. The odds to have a rat burrow were higher in case houses than in control houses (OR

New molecular data on mammalian Hepatozoon species (Apicomplexa: Adeleorina) from Brazil and Spain.

Molecular techniques were used to examine the phylogenetic relationships among Hepatozoon species isolated from 13 foxes and 15 opossums from Brazil, and from 15 dogs, 20 foxes, 45 rodents, and 330 domestic cats from Spain. Hemogregarine infection was confirmed by amplification of the 18S rRNA gene and later sequencing. No hemogregarine infections were found in opossums. The prevalence of Hepatozoon in canids ranged from 26.6% (symptomatic domestic dogs) to 90% (Spanish foxes). Four different H. canis genotypes were detected, as well as an H. americanum-related protozoan (97% identical to the

[Risk factors and frequency of positive antibodies for leptospirosis in a sub urban population near Santiago].

BACKGROUND: Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease and its incidence is known in Chile since 2002, when it was incorporated as a disease that must be reported to health authorities. A serologic survey for leptospirosis was performed in humans and animals from a farm in a semi urban area in Santiago Chile, after the death of a farmer due to Weil disease in that place. AIM: To report the prevalence of antibodies against leptospirosis and to determine exposure to infection risk factors in the humans and domestic animals studied in this survey. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Antibodies were detected by IgM

Exposure to nonhuman primates in rural Cameroon.

Exposure to nonhuman primates has led to the emergence of important diseases, including Ebola hemorrhagic fever, AIDS, and adult T-cell leukemia. To determine the extent of exposure to nonhuman primates, persons were examined in 17 remote villages in Cameroon that represented three habitats (savanna, gallery forest, and lowland forest). Questionnaire data were collected to assess whether persons kept wild animal pets; hunted and butchered wild game; had experienced bites, scratches, or injuries from live animals; or had been injured during hunting or butchering. While all villages had substant

The ventilatory and metabolic response to hypercapnia in newborn mammalian species.

Conscious newborns of 12 species from 4 mammalian orders, ranging in body mass (M) from 1 g (mouse) to 5 kg (deer), were studied during air and during 5% CO2 breathing. The interspecies relationship between oxygen consumption (VO2) and M was the same in air and hypercapnia, in both cases VO2 alpha M 0.90; on average, hypercapnic VO2 was 101% of the air value. In 5% CO2, ventilation (VE) increased in all newborns, mostly because of the increase in tidal volume (178%), whereas breathing rates averaged 98% of the air values. The hyperpnea during CO2 was slightly greater in the larger newborns. Bo

A study of small mammals in the Ciloto field station area, West Java, Indonesia, with special reference to vectors of plague and scrub typhus.

From June 1977 to June 1978 a study of smal mammals was carried out in the Ciloto field station area, West Java, Indonesia by the WHO Vector Biology and Control Research Unit-II. The objectives of the investigations were to determine the diversity and density of rodent species, to find potential plague and scrub typhus vectors and to study their host-parasite relationships. In the 13 month period a total of 6 species of murids were identified; two species of campestral rats (R. tiomanicus and R. argentiventer), one species of peri-domestic (R. exulans), one species of domestic (R.r. diardii),
