Selected characteristics and injury patterns by age group among pedestrians treated in North Carolina emergency departments.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe pedestrian demographic characteristics, crash characteristics, selected health outcomes, and injury patterns by age using linked North Carolina (NC) crash-emergency department (ED) visit data for the period October 1, 2010, to September 30, 2015. METHODS: This was a descriptive epidemiologic study. To examine both crash and health outcomes, NC pedestrian crash records were linked to statewide NC ED visit records using hierarchical deterministic methods. Pearson chi-square tests were used to compare the frequencies of pedestrians treated i

Pharmacoeconomics of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for the relief of the symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), sprains and strains, sports injuries and menstrual disorders, and have a small role in the management of patent ductus arteriosus in the neonate. In patients with RA, symptom relief through use of NSAIDs is firmly established, although it remains unclear whether they influence the course and outcome of the disease. For the average patient with RA taking NSAIDs, the attributable risk of hospitalisation with gastrointestinal problems related to NSAIDs is…

Trends of E-Scooter-Related Pediatric Orthopaedic Injuries: 20 Years of Nationally Representative Data.

INTRODUCTION: The rise in popularity of battery-powered 2-wheeled electric scooters (e-scooters) has fostered safety concerns, particularly because of a lack of universally recommended safety precautions. Orthopaedic injuries are common in the pediatric population, yet little is known about the trends of e-scooter-related orthopaedic injuries in this population. The aim of this study was to investigate the national trends in orthopaedic injuries among children operating e-scooters over a twenty-year period. METHODS: The National Electronic Surveillance System, a publicly available database of

Comparison of pediatric performance athlete injuries presenting to emergency departments.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric injuries in performance sports represent a significant healthcare burden and account for over 50,000 annual Emergency Department (ED) visits in the United States. The objective of this study was to characterize and compare pediatric injury presentation across the most common performance sports. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was retrospectively analyzed for pediatric injuries (3-18 years) related to gymnastics, dance, or cheerleading from 2015-2019. Cases were categorized as children (˂11 years) or adolescent (≥11 years). Inju

Difficult life events affect lower extremity illness.

BACKGROUND: Given the relationship between psychological distress and activity tolerance (capability), a stressful life event might diminish accommodation, increase symptoms, and induce a person to seek specialty care. As a first step to investigate this possibility, this study addressed whether difficult life events are associated with greater activity intolerance and pain intensity. METHODS: A cohort of 127 patients seeking specialty care for lower extremity symptoms completed questionnaires that inquired about difficult life events within the last 12 months as derived from the Holmes Rahe

A family practice orthopedic trauma clinic.

In order to help provide care for acute orthopedic injuries to a portion of a military patient population and to add simultaneously a new aspect to the orthopedic rotation of family practice residents, a family practice orthopedic trauma clinic, staffed solely by family physicians, was initiated, and the records for six months were examined and summarized. A total of 540 patient visits, 286 (52.9 percent) of whom were adults during 45 sessions of this clinic were noted. Fractures accounted for 79.2 percent of the injuries, while sprains and contusions accounted for 17.7 and 3.1 percent, respec

Femoral neck strain prediction during level walking using a combined musculoskeletal and finite element model approach.

Recently, coupled musculoskeletal-finite element modelling approaches have emerged as a way to investigate femoral neck loading during various daily activities. Combining personalised gait data with finite element models will not only allow us to study changes in motion/movement, but also their effects on critical internal structures, such as the femur. However, previous studies have been hampered by the small sample size and the lack of fully personalised data in order to construct the coupled model. Therefore, the aim of this study was to build a pipeline for a fully personalised multiscale

The initial effects of a Mulligan's mobilization with movement technique on dorsiflexion and pain in subacute ankle sprains.

Physiotherapists frequently use manipulative therapy techniques to treat dysfunction and pain resulting from ankle sprain. This study investigated whether a Mulligan's mobilization with movement (MWM) technique improves talocrural dorsiflexion, a major impairment following ankle sprain, and relieves pain in subacute populations. Fourteen subjects with subacute grade II lateral ankle sprains served as their own control in a repeated measures, double-blind randomized controlled trial that measured the initial effects of the MWM treatment on weight bearing dorsiflexion and pressure and thermal pa

Systemic immune response in whiplash injury and ankle sprain: elevated IL-6 and IL-10.

Whiplash injury and whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) are significant problems of modern society. Numerous attempts have been made to characterize the nature of whiplash injury. Whether the immune system is involved during the disease process is not known. In a prospective study, using enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays, we examined numbers of blood mononuclear cells (MNC) secreting pro- (IFN-gamma, TNF-alpha, IL-6) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines in patients with WAD and, for reference, patients with ankle sprain and multiple sclerosis and healthy subjects. An immune response

Biexponential recovery model of lumbar viscoelastic laxity and reflexive muscular activity after prolonged cyclic loading.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the rest duration required for full recovery of reflexive muscular activity and laxity/creep induced in the lumbar viscoelastic structures (e.g., ligaments, discs, etc.) after 50 min of cyclic loading, and to develop a model describing such recovery. BACKGROUND: It is well established that steady, cyclic or vibratory loading of the lumbar spine induces laxity/creep in its viscoelastic structures. It was also shown that such viscoelastic creep does not fully recover when subjected to rest equal in duration to the loading period. Rest periods of 24 h, however, were more

A double-blind study of the efficacy of topical ketorolac tromethamine gel in the treatment of ankle sprain, in comparison to placebo and etofenamate.

In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study the efficacy and safety of topical ketorolac tromethamine were assessed in the reduction of inflammation and pain due to ankle sprain. Ketorolac 2% gel was compared with etofenamate and placebo (ketorolac vehicle) in a 15-day study. Patients attended for visits on days 1 (admission), 2, 3, 4, 8, and 15 of the study. Measurements of efficacy were ankle volume, pain measured on visual analogue scales (VAS) and verbal rating of pain. Safety was assessed by volunteered adverse events and vital signs. A total of 37 patients was admitted to the study of wh

Injuries in youth football and the relationship to player maturation: An analysis of time-loss injuries during four seasons in an English elite male football academy.

A better insight into injuries in elite-youth football may inform prevention strategies. The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the frequency, incidence, and pattern of time-loss injuries in an elite male football academy, exploring injuries in relation to age and maturation status. Across four consecutive playing seasons, playing exposure and injuries to all academy players (U'9 to U'21) were recorded by club medical staff. Maturation status at the time of injury was also calculated for players competing in U'13 to U'16 aged squads. Time-loss injury occurrence and mat

Study protocol: the effect of whole body vibration on acute unilateral unstable lateral ankle sprain- a biphasic randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprains often result in ankle instability, which is most likely caused by damage to passive structures and neuromuscular impairment. Whole body vibration (WBV) is a neuromuscular training method improving those impaired neurologic parameters. The aim of this study is to compare the current gold standard functional treatment to functional treatment plus WBV in patients with acute unilateral unstable inversion ankle sprains. METHODS/DESIGN: 60 patients, aged 18-40 years, presenting with an isolated, unilateral, acute unstable inversion ankle sprain will be included in this bic
