The occurrence of Strongyloides ratti in the tissues of mice after percutaneous infection.

The migration of infective larvae of Strongyloides ratti has been examined in C57Bl/6 mice after percutaneous infection of the anterior abdominal wall. Lateral migration of larvae through the skin and subcutaneous tissues was not seen. Large numbers of larvae were recovered from the muscles between 2 and 24 hours after infection and larvae were seen in the cerebrospinal fluid 24 and 48 hours after infection. Insignificant numbers of larvae were seen in the blood, serosal cavities, liver, spleen, kidneys, brain or nasopharynx. Larvae arrived in the lungs between 24 and 72 hours after infection

Absorption studies in patients with parasitic infestation of the small intestine, before and after treatment.

Forty adult patients having intestinal infestation with giardia or with parasitic associations, such as giardia-strongiloides, giardia-taenia solium, were subjected to morphological explorations, iron and vitamin B12 absorption tests, steatorrhea assay and serological tests, before treatment as well as six months and one year after eradication of the infection. On admittance, jejunal morphological lesions were noted only in 15 cases especially in associated infestation, iron depletion in six patients, vitamin B12 malabsorption in five patients and steatorrhea only in two cases. After the lapse

Accuracy of five serologic tests for the follow up of Strongyloides stercoralis infection.

BACKGROUND: Traditional faecal-based methods have poor sensitivity for the detection of S. stercoralis, therefore are inadequate for post-treatment evaluation of infected patients who should be carefully monitored to exclude the persistence of the infection. In a previous study, we demonstrated high accuracy of five serology tests for the screening and diagnosis of strongyloidiasis. Aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of the same five tests for the follow up of patients infected with S. stercoralis. METHODS: Retrospective study on anonymized, cryo-preserved samples available at t…

Strongyloides species exhibit distinct behaviors on the skin of different mammals.

BACKGROUND: Skin-penetrating nematodes, including the human parasite Strongyloides stercoralis and the rat parasite Strongyloides ratti, are gastrointestinal parasites that infect when infective third-stage larvae (iL3s) invade host skin. To enter the skin, iL3s engage in skin-penetration behavior, in which they repeatedly push and puncture the skin surface before ultimately burrowing into the skin. These parasites have narrow host ranges, but the extent to which skin-penetration behavior contributes to host specificity remains unclear. Here, we examine the behavior of S. stercoralis and S. ra

Gastrointestinal parasite infections in Nepalese Gurkha recruits arriving in the United Kingdom from 2012-2020.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasite (GIP) infections are a major cause of global morbidity, infecting hundreds of millions of people each year and potentially leading to lifelong infection and serious complications. Few data exist on screening for GIP infections in migrants entering the UK or on the current performance of different traditional diagnostic approaches. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of GIP infections in Nepalese Gurkha recruits screened on arrival in the UK. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We present a retrospective analysis of data from screening male adults (18-

Endomyocardial involvement in asymptomatic Latin American migrants with eosinophilia related to helminth infection: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Hypereosinophilic syndrome can produce cardiac involvement and endomyocardial fibrosis, which have a poor prognosis. However, there is limited information regarding cardiac involvement among migrants from Latin America with eosinophilia related to helminthiasis. METHODS: We conducted a pilot observational study where an echocardiography was performed on migrants from Latin America with both eosinophilia (>450 cells/μL) and a diagnosis of helminth infection, and on migrants from Latin America without eosinophilia or helminth infection. Microbiological techniques included a stool mi

Scope and limitations of a multiplex conventional PCR for the diagnosis of S. stercoralis and hookworms.

OBJECTIVES: Describe the diagnostic characteristics of a conventional multiplex PCR for the diagnosis of S. stercoralis, N. americanus and Ancylostomas spp. METHODS: Fecal samples were collected from a cross-sectional study in Orán department, Salta province, Argentina. The stool samples were analyzed using concentration-sedimentation, Harada Mori, McMaster, and Baermann techniques. DNA was extracted from 50 mg fecal sample using the FastPrep® Spin Kit for Soil. Three pairs of primers were used for the amplification of three products of 101, 330, and 577 base pairs (bp) for S. stercoralis, N.

Practical approach to monitoring and prevention of infectious complications associated with systemic corticosteroids, antimetabolites, cyclosporine, and cyclophosphamide in nonmalignant hematologic diseases.

Corticosteroids constitute a first-line therapy for adults and children suffering from nonmalignant immune-mediated hematologic diseases. However, high disease relapse rates during the tapering period or upon drug discontinuation result in long-term corticosteroid use that increases the risk of infection. This same concept applies to other immunosuppressive agents, such as antimetabolites, calcineurin inhibitors, and cyclophosphamide. Corticosteroids are associated with a length-of-treatment and dose-dependent risk for infection. Screening and antimicrobial prophylaxis against tuberculosis, he

Multiple Simultaneous Gastrointestinal Parasitic Infections in a Patient with Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

Patients with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection are at high risk for gastrointestinal infections causing diarrhea, particularly when those infections are parasitic in nature. This propensity is more pronounced in AIDS, where opportunistic parasitic infections may cause severe diarrhea, marked absorptive dysfunction, and significant risk of mortality. There are scant data regarding parasitic infections among HIV patients in the developed world; most studies and research come from povertystricken areas of South Africa, India, Iran, and the South Pacific. Although multiple infectio

Does Strongyloides stercoralis infection protect against type 2 diabetes in humans? Evidence from Australian Aboriginal adults.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between infection with Strongyloides stercoralis and the likelihood of having type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: Cross-sectional survey of 259 Aboriginal adults living in a remote community in northern Australia during 2013. Prior infection with S. stercoralis was determined by ELISA testing on serum. Main outcomes were eosinophil count, T2DM diagnosis, HbA1c, BMI, fasting lipids, Hb, blood pressure. FINDINGS: Ninety two participants (36%) had prior infection with S. stercoralis and 131 (51%) had T2DM. Those with previous S. stercoralis infection
