Professional Identity of Nurses in Türkiye: Men's Entry Into a Female-Dominated Profession.

AIM: To explore how men's entry into nursing is reshaping perceptions of the profession's identity in Türkiye, and to examine critically whether this shift de-genders the profession or subtly re-masculinises it. BACKGROUND: Research on gendered occupations has focused predominantly on women entering male-dominated fields, while the renegotiation of nursing's identity following men's entry remains underexplored. Studies in Türkiye have also relied largely on nurses' own accounts. Because professional identity is constructed relationally, understanding this transformation requires the simultane

Working in pairs: male-female village health volunteers supporting maternal health and community engagement in remote and ethnic communities of Lao PDR-a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) are vital for improving maternal and child health (MCH) in underserved settings; however, gender norms often influence their functioning. In the Lao PDR, Village Health Volunteers (VHVs) serve as frontline CHWs in rural areas. Xepon District is a remote border area with Vietnam, characterized by underserved conditions, limited health access, and predominantly ethnic minority populations. The VHV workforce in this district is largely male, which restricts culturally acceptable outreach to women and underscores the need to test a paired male-female mod

Oil spill surface washing agents and chemical herders drive microbial community structure impacting biodegradation.

UNLABELLED: Spill treating agents (STAs) may be authorized for use during an oil spill response; however, the impact of certain classes of agents on oil biodegradation is poorly understood. Microcosms comprising an oil-degrading microbial consortium were amended with weathered crude oil and treated with two STAs: a surface washing agent or chemical herder, alongside single-agent treatments. The microbial community readily degraded the STAs, evidenced by microbial growth and respiration. Carbon dioxide production was higher than expected in treatments containing oil and STA together, suggesting

Sex Differences in Low-dose Ethanol Effects on Motivated Behavior and Limbic Corticostriatal Activity.

BACKGROUND: In 2023, the World Health Organization declared that there is no safe amount of alcohol consumption. It is becoming increasingly clear that even at lower doses, ethanol exposure impacts both the brain and behavior. Emerging work has shown that chronic exposure to lower doses of ethanol may lead to inflexible behaviors and promote aberrant reward seeking. This study aimed to determine the impact of chronic, low-dose ethanol exposure on neural substrates of reward and associated alterations in behavioral strategy in response to change in reward value. METHODS: Female and male C57BL/

Leveraging transfer learning techniques for automated tuberculosis classification on chest X-rays.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the major community-health challenges, particularly in underdeveloped and middle-income sets where there is a low maximum in diagnostic areas. Proper management depends on timely and correct detection thus enabling less transmission and timely treatment. Screening of TB by Chest X-rays is used widely due to its availability and speed but their reading depends entirely on skilled radiologists who sometimes can be vulnerable to variability, either due to subjective interpretation or due to pressure. Such constraints support the need to have automated reliable means th

Perplexity of utterances in untreated first-episode psychosis: an ultra-high field MRI dynamic causal modelling study of the semantic network.

BACKGROUND: Psychosis involves a distortion of thought content, which is partly reflected in anomalous ways in which words are semantically connected into utterances in speech. We sought to explore how these linguistic anomalies are realized through putative circuit-level abnormalities in the brain's semantic network. METHODS: Using a computational large-language model, Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), we quantified the contextual expectedness of a given word sequence (perplexity) across 180 samples obtained from descriptions of 3 pictures by patients with first

Genetic Disruption of System xc-Mediated Glutamate Release from Astrocytes Increases Negative-Outcome Behaviors While Preserving Basic Brain Function in Rat.

The importance of neuronal glutamate to synaptic transmission throughout the brain illustrates the immense therapeutic potential and safety risks of targeting this system. Astrocytes also release glutamate, the clinical relevance of which is unknown as the range of brain functions reliant on signaling from these cells hasn't been fully established. Here, we investigated system xc- (Sxc), which is a glutamate release mechanism with an in vivo rodent expression pattern that is restricted to astrocytes. As most animals do not express Sxc, we first compared the expression and sequence of the oblig

Associations between time-weighted postnatal methylmercury exposure from fish consumption and neurodevelopmental outcomes through 24 years of age in the Seychelles Child Development Study Main Cohort.

PURPOSE: Methylmercury (MeHg) is a known neurodevelopmental toxicant in sufficient dosage and is universally found in fish. Current fish advisories for children are based on epidemiology studies examining prenatal exposure with a premise that MeHg exposure resulting from children eating fish could also be neurotoxic and have long-term consequences. However, the evidence that this assumption is true is limited. We investigated postnatal MeHg exposure from regular fish consumption using time weighted Hg measurements to determine if there are neurotoxic consequences. METHODS: We examined 85 neur

Attention deficit hyperactivity, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, or something else: the broad differential of kindergarten suspension.

Thomas is a 5-year 6-month-old boy whose parents requested an urgent care appointment because he has recently been suspended from kindergarten stating "and his doctor must see him before he can come back." His suspension from kindergarten was due to kicking and biting his classmates, but he has also become increasingly aggressive at home. His teacher reported that he has always had a high activity level and difficulty shifting attention between tasks, as well as noncompliance with rules and directions. He is noted to have learning challenges and is showing difficulties in the concept of number

Assessing the instrumentalist interface: modifications, ergonomics and maintenance of play.

Awareness of the tasks required to play a particular instrument requires observation of technique and understanding of the dynamic and static loads placed on the musculoskeletal system to play a particular instrument. Anatomic differences, variation in hand size, gender, instrument choice, and maintainance of the instrument all may play a role in the development of playing-related complaints. Simply observing particular instruments, we can see a variety of positions that are required to play the instrument. Important to the discussion of overuse syndromes, we must evaluate the duration of prac

Restoration of vision II: residual functions and training-induced visual field enlargement in brain-damaged patients.

PURPOSE: Brain damage is often accompanied by visual field defects which have been considered to be non-treatable. In recent years, however, new diagnostic methods have revealed hitherto unknown residual vision, which was found, for instance, in transition zones near the blind visual field sectors and in spared islands of vision within the blind regions ("blindsight"). Furthermore, animal studies revealed a high degree of plasticity in the visual system suggesting the possibility that recovery of vision may be induced by systematic visual training. METHODS: Here we summarize a series of studi

Nonvisual photoreceptors of the deep brain, pineal organs and retina.

The role of the nonvisual photoreception is to synchronise periodic functions of living organisms to the environmental light periods in order to help survival of various species in different biotopes. In vertebrates, the so-called deep brain (septal and hypothalamic) photoreceptors, the pineal organs (pineal- and parapineal organs, frontal- and parietal eye) and the retina (of the "lateral" eye) are involved in the light-based entrain of endogenous circadian clocks present in various organs. In humans, photoperiodicity was studied in connection with sleep disturbances in shift work, seasonal d

Relationship Between Occupational Identity and Work Engagement Among Professional Caregivers: The Mediating Role of Psychological Capital.

OBJECTIVE: The theoretical basis of this research is the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model and the Conservation of Resources (COR) theory. This research aims to explore the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between occupational identity and work engagement among professional caregivers. BACKGROUNDS: Amidst China's evolving social landscape, driven by a rapidly aging population and the implementation of 'unaccompanied ward' policies, hospitals are progressively professionalizing and standardizing nursing tasks previously performed by family members. This shift has tr

Reversible inhibition of medial septum interneurons abolishes initial acquisition of new place-reward associations and reveals a progressive reduction in dependence on medial septal function.

Hippocampal place cells encode spatial information within a theta-organized temporal framework paced by the medial septum (MS). Lesions or inactivation of the MS impair spatial learning and disrupt hippocampal theta rhythmicity, long-term potentiation, and plasticity-related gene expression, while often sparing spatially selective firing of CA1 neurons (but not CA3 neurons). Although many rodent studies argue against classical systems consolidation by showing persistent hippocampal dependence of spatial memories, other work has suggested that training structure, spaced vs. massed trials, can i

Membrane Kymograph Generator: A cross-platform GUI software for automated generation and analysis of kymographs along dynamic cell boundaries.

SUMMARY: The plasma membrane and accompanying cortex serve as one of the major hubs of the signal transduction and cytoskeletal activities that collectively regulate numerous cell physiological processes such as migration, polarity, macropinocytosis, phagocytosis, cytokinesis, etc. Yet, dynamically tracking membrane-cortex associated protein or lipid kinetics over time from live-cell image series remains a challenging task, primarily due to the difficulty of accurately extracting and aligning the cell boundary between consecutive frames, as the cell continuously deforms and moves. Here, we pre
