Inheritance of cold shock tolerance in hybrids of Drosophila virilis and Drosophila lummei.

The genetic basis of the difference in cold shock tolerance between the southern temperate Drosophila virilis and its boreal relative D. lummei is studied. After adult eclosion, the parental stocks, reciprocal F1 and backcross hybrids were pretreated for eight days at 18 degrees C or at 6 degrees C. The cold shock used consisted of fast cooling to -10 degrees C and exposure to this temperature for varying lengths of time. D. lummei tolerated such exposure for 40-50% longer than did D. virilis (100-135% after acclimation). Reciprocal F1 females, differing only in their maternal cytoplasm deviat

Interdigital athlete's foot: new concepts in pathogenesis.

In our view, interdigital athlete's foot usually begins with invasion of the horny layer by dermatophytes. Because of hot weather, sweating, exercise, or tight shoes, enough moisture accumulates to stimulate an overgrowth of bacteria. Large numbers of normally resident aerobic diphtheroids cause the common wet, macerated type of athlete's foot, while an overgrowth of Gram-negative organisms, such as Pseudomonas and Proteus, is responsible for the more serious cases. The dry, scaly type (dermatophytosis simplex) often alternates with the wet, macerated type (dermatophytosis complex). Flare-ups

A Field Study of the Lava Lizard (Tropidurus Albemarlensis) in the Galapagos Islands.

The effect of removal of the parietal eye (parietalectomy) was studied in free-living lava lizards at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands, and the results were compared with those obtained with parietalectomized temperate zone iguanids. Behavior, activity, body temperature, and Iodine-131 uptake by the thyroid gland were studied from Jan. 23 to Feb. 27, 1964. Parietalectomy had no detectable effect on any of the parameters investigated. Home ranges of adult male and female lizards were measured, and defensive and antagonistic behavior was noted. The home ranbges of mal

Age is the wrong axis: rethinking surgical selection for octogenarians with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer is increasingly a disease of older age, and as low-dose computed tomography screening extends into the ninth decade, a growing number of octogenarians present with early-stage, potentially curable non-small cell lung cancer. Faced with these patients, clinicians repeatedly ask a single question: is this patient too old for surgery? Recent prospective data show that selected octogenarians achieve long-term survival comparable to younger patients despite substantially higher complication rates, with quality of life that recovers over the first postoperative year. Yet the favorable re

Effects of marine heatwaves on haploid and diploid isomorphic phases from two distant populations of Gracilaria caudata (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta).

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are becoming more common and intense, forcing the physiological limits of marine organisms and causing major ecological impacts throughout the world. This work used a well-studied species of Rhodophyta as a model to understand how different thermal ecotypes and isomorphic life history phases respond to MHWs. The thermal ecotypic populations of Gracilaria caudata in Brazil constitute an adaptive strategy for the species to remain in a wide temperature range. In this study, tetrasporophytes and unfertilized female gametophytes of G. caudata from the Tropical Southwestern

Diversity and Host Associations of the Genus Colletotrichum in Korea.

Colletotrichum is one of the most economically important genera of plant pathogenic fungi worldwide, yet its species diversity and host associations remain incompletely understood in many regions. In Korea, historical records based largely on morphological identification have underestimated species diversity and obscured host-association patterns. In this review, we provide an integrative reassessment of Colletotrichum diversity and host associations in Korea, combining published literature with recent taxonomic re-evaluations of 237 Colletotrichum isolates preserved in the Korean Agricultural

Molecular mechanisms of typical chelating agents influencing the early hydration of C3S: a combined MD and DFT study.

Organic chelating agents are widely used to regulate cement hydration, yet the molecular relationship between ligand structure, interfacial adsorption, and mineral dissolution remains unclear. To overcome the limitations of single-scale approaches, this study employs a comprehensive synergistic framework combining density functional theory (DFT), well-tempered metadynamics, and unbiased molecular dynamics (MD). This framework investigates four typical chelating agents-acetic acid (AA), citric acid (CA), EDTA, and sodium gluconate (SG)-specifically selected for their distinct and representative

Evolving role of proton therapy in contemporary oncology.

Proton therapy offers a distinct physical advantage over photon radiotherapy through the Bragg peak dose concentration in target with both lower integral dose and finite path length, and sharper penumbra as compared to photons, collectively reducing radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissues and potentially improving the therapeutic ratio. However, this advantage is tempered by uncertainties, including range uncertainty and variable relative biological effectiveness. In this review, the authors summarize contemporary evidence supporting proton therapy across pediatric, central nervous sy

Mechanistic attenuation by L-carnitine of trastuzumab-induced downregulation of adenosine monophosphate -activated protein kinase signal in cardiac H9c2 cells.

BACKGROUND: Clinical usefulness of trastuzumab (TZ) is restrained owing to its cardiotoxic effect. This investigation was initiated to evaluate the potential protective impact of carnitine (CARN) against TZ-related cardiac influence; and to uncover the underlining mechanism. METHODS: Cytotoxic effect of TZ, CARN and their combination was assessed in cardiac H9c2 cells. Carnitine pamlitoyltransferase-1B (CPT1B) and adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase-α2 (AMPK-α2) expression were investigated using quantitative real-time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). Bacteriophages in the environmental control of antimicrobial resistance: opportunities, risks, and surveillance challenges.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health challenge, driven by the persistence and dissemination of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). These resistance determinants can accumulate and spread across diverse environmental compartments, including wastewater, hospital effluents, agricultural systems, and landfills, facilitating their dissemination through mechanisms such as horizontal gene transfer. Bacteriophages have emerged as promising tools for the targeted control of antibiotic-resistant bacterial populations, as their lytic activity ca

The role of antibody-mediated immunity in shaping the seasonality of respiratory viruses.

In temperate regions, respiratory virus epidemics recur on a yearly basis, primarily during the winter season. This is believed to be induced by seasonal forcing, where the rate at which the virus can be transmitted varies cyclically across the course of each year. Seasonal epidemics can place substantial burden upon the healthcare system, with large numbers of infections and hospitalisations occurring across a short time period. However, the interactions between seasonal forcing and the factors necessary for epidemic resurgence - such as waning immunity, antigenic variation or demography - re

Anti-Obesity Medications in Longevity and Aesthetic Medicine.

Anti-obesity medications (AOMs), led by the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) semaglutide and liraglutide and the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide, have produced substantial weight reduction and growing signals of benefit that extend well beyond adiposity. These agents are now discussed in relation to longevity and aesthetic medicine, raising the question of whether their effects reach ageing biology and appearance. This narrative review (PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Clinical trial registries; January 2010-June 2026) integrates me

Modeling chronic infection with Mycoplasma pneumoniae at an air-liquid interface: global transcriptional response of HBEC3-KT respiratory epithelial cells to biofilm towers.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae, a bacterial pathogen that causes chronic respiratory infections, grows as biofilm towers in both axenic culture and submerged tissue culture model systems. In these towers, virulence factor production is reduced. The clinical relevance of these towers is unclear because biofilms have not been examined in air-liquid interface (ALI) models of M. pneumoniae infection. We used differentiated HBEC3-KT human bronchial epithelial cells at an ALI to understand how M. pneumoniae grows on and interacts with airway cells in a more physiologically relevant setting than submerged sys

Genomic basis of local adaptation in Elymus sibiricus revealed by genotype-environment associations and common garden experiments.

BACKGROUND: Unraveling the genetic basis underlying local adaptation represents a pivotal area of research within ecological and evolutionary biology. In the present study, we explored the genomic mechanisms that underpin the local adaptation of Elymus sibiricus, an indigenous grass species predominantly distributed in the temperate alpine regions of the Eurasian continent. RESULTS: Population structure analyses categorize 316 accessions of E. sibiricus into three distinct clusters: XJ (Xinjiang), NC (North of China), and the QTP (Qinghai-Xizang Plateau). Furthermore, through selection sweep

The evolving role of radiotherapy in advanced non-small cell lung cancer: beyond symptom control.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) remains the leading cause of cancer mortality in the UK, with most patients presenting with locally advanced or metastatic disease. While palliative radiotherapy has historically aimed to alleviate symptoms, rapid advances in imaging, planning, and delivery-particularly stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR)-have expanded its role toward disease control. This review summarises the evolving evidence for external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) and SABR in advanced NSCLC. Low-dose thoracic EBRT remains effective for symptom relief, though higher-dose regimens

Composition and assembly processes of rhizosphere bacterial communities of arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal tree species.

How the mycorrhizal type of tree species regulates the composition and assembly processes of rhizosphere bacterial communities remains unclear. We selected five arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and five ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree species from two typical forests across different climatic zones, namely a subtropical evergreen broadleaved forest at Tiantong Station in Zhejiang and a temperate broadleaved Korean pine forest at Maoershan Station in Heilongjiang. We analyzed the rhizosphere soil physicochemical properties and bacterial community composition, and quantified the assembly processes of bact

Live biotherapeutics in the clinic: Regulatory pathways, market dynamics, and future trends.

Live Biotherapeutic Products (LBPs), as defined by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, are biological products containing live microorganisms intended for the prevention, treatment, or cure of human disease. Distinct from vaccines, their therapeutic effects derive from the biological activity of the living organism itself, including intrinsic functions and, where applicable, metabolites produced in situ. LBPs may originate from human or environmental sources or be rationally designed and are developed, manufactured, and regulated as drugs or biologics for clinical use. Once confined to expe
