Normative data for rotational chair considering motion susceptibility.

OBJECTIVE: Rotational Chair Test (RCT) is considered one of the most critical measures for vestibular functionality, which generally includes the sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test (SHAT), velocity step test (VST), and visual suppression (VS). The purpose of this study was to establish normal values for different age groups on the RCT and investigate whether motion susceptibility, such as with a history of motion sickness or migraine, has any effects on test metrics. METHODS: One hundred and nine subjects aged from 20 to 59 years who were free from neurotological and vestibular disorders w

Dizziness after an earthquake tilted the house.

Major earthquakes occasionally cause vertiginous attacks or persistent dizziness, which may be related to the effects of autonomic stress on equilibrium function and/or psychological factors. We present the case of a 73-year-old woman who suffered from persistent dizziness for 1 year, during which she lived in a house tilted by the great 2011 Tōhoku earthquake. An electronystagmogram demonstrated leftward horizontal and downbeat nystagmus in the sitting and supine positions with eyes closed. Caloric testing and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials showed normal responses in both ears

A Puzzle of Vestibular Physiology in a Meniere's Disease Acute Attack.

The aim of this paper is to present for the first time the functional evaluation of each of the vestibular receptors in the six semicircular canals in a patient diagnosed with Meniere's disease during an acute attack. A 54-year-old lady was diagnosed with left Meniere's disease who during her regular clinic review suffers an acute attack of vertigo, with fullness and an increase of tinnitus in her left ear. Spontaneous nystagmus and the results in the video head-impulse test (vHIT) are shown before, during, and after the attack. Nystagmus was initially left beating and a few minutes later an u

Electrophysiological brainstem investigations in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome.

Phasic inspiratory genioglossus activity prevents pharyngeal airway collapse in healthy subjects during sleep and is diminished or absent in obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), thus leading to pharyngeal obstruction. Case reports of OSAS after pontomedullary lesions indicate that impaired inspiratory genioglossal activity may result from brainstem lesions. We therefore investigated brainstem functions in 18 awake patients with OSAS using brainstem auditory evoked potentials, blink reflex, masseter reflex, masseter inhibitory reflex (in 11 of 18 patients), magnetic evoked potentials of th

Evaluation of voice acoustic parameters related to the vocal-loading test in professionally active teachers with dysphonia.

INTRODUCTION: Teachers are at risk of developing voice disorders. A clinical battery of vocal function tests should include non-invasive and accurate measurements. The quantitative methods (e.g., voice acoustic analysis) make it possible to objectively evaluate voice efficiency and outcomes of dysphonia treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To identify possible signs of vocal fatigue, acoustic waveform perturbations during sustained phonation were measured before and after the vocal-loading test in 51 professionally active female teachers with functional voice disorders, using IRIS software. All

A fully automatic radiomics pipeline for postoperative facial nerve function prediction of vestibular schwannoma.

Vestibular schwannoma (VS) is the most prevalent intracranial schwannoma. Surgery is one of the options for the treatment of VS, with the preservation of facial nerve (FN) function being the primary objective. Therefore, postoperative FN function prediction is essential. However, achieving automation for such a method remains a challenge. In this study, we proposed a fully automatic deep learning approach based on multi-sequence magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to predict FN function after surgery in VS patients. We first developed a segmentation network 2.5D Trans-UNet, which combined Transfo

Ocular motor and vestibular examination in the unconscious patient-standard of care.

BACKGROUND: Eye movements play an essential role in the assessment of the unconscious patient and offer a window to the function of the brain. We review the range of ocular motor and vestibular findings in patients with impaired consciousness and present a practical approach to these patients. METHODS: Based on a structured review of the literature (Pubmed, Embase) 54 suitable citations were identified amongst 4,241 total citations. A manual search of the reference list of selected papers added another 57 papers. Based on these publications the spectrum of eye movement abnormalities in the un

Exploration of effects of galvanic vestibular stimulation on circadian rhythms and its associations with sleep and spatial memory in patients with breast cancer: The ICANSLEEP-2 protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patients with breast cancer (BC) exhibit circadian rhythm disruptions, mainly of rest-activity rhythm (RAR), of which sleep is an essential component, and cortisol rhythm. Sleep complaints such as insomnia and cognitive impairments are prevalent in BC. In general population, sleep is known to contribute greatly to cognition. Thus, improving RAR (and particularly sleep) could help limiting cognitive impairments in BC patients. It has recently been suggested that, in addition to its essential role in spatial memory, the vestibular system contributes to RAR synchronization. Its stimul

[Changes in taste ability in patients with vestibular schwannoma].

Vestibular schwannomas (VS) are rare tumors that can cause different symptoms due to their anatomical relationship to the cranial nerves in the inner auditory canal. So far little data is known to the effect of VS on the somatosensory function of the intermediate nerve. This study aimed to investigate the taste function of patients suffering from single sided VS. Therefore the well validated psychophysical test "Taste Strips" has been used. 26 patients who consulted our outpatient clinic at a university hospital could be included in the study. All patients were asked carefully for their medica

Three-dimensional eye movement analysis during caloric stimulation used to test vertical semicircular canal function.

HYPOTHESIS AND BACKGROUND: Quantitative caloric testing is considered to be one of the most sensitive parameters in the diagnosis of peripheral vestibular disorders. In the past, because of limitations in the methods, the evaluation of the caloric response was restricted to mainly lateral semicircular canal functions. In this study, the authors tried to extend caloric testing to the function of all semicircular canals by using three-dimensional (3-D) analysis techniques. METHODS: The authors studied in seven normal subjects 3-D eye movement responses to air caloric of the right ear with the s

Characterizing gaze and postural stability deficits in people with multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: People with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) experience a wide range of symptoms that can alter function and limit activity and community participation. Symptoms including sensory changes, weakness, fatigue and others have been well documented. However, symptoms related to changes in vestibular related function, including gaze and postural stability have not been fully explored. While some recent studies have begun to provide insight into these deficits in PwMS and have explored the use of rehabilitation paradigms for their management, much remains unknown about the full extent of these d

Hyperventilation-induced nystagmus in vestibular schwannoma and unilateral sensorineural hearing loss.

We evaluated the incidence and characteristics of hyperventilation-induced nystagmus (HVN) in 49 patients with gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging evidence of vestibular schwannoma and 53 patients with idiopathic unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and normal radiological findings. The sensitivity and specificity of the hyperventilation test were compared with other audio-vestibular diagnostic tests (bedside examination of eye movements, caloric test, auditory brainstem responses) in the two groups of patients. The hyperventilation test scored the highest diagnostic efficiency (se
