Infections arising from free-living amebae are rare. They generally cause recognizable disease only in chronically ill, debilitated patients who are immune suppressed. Only about 70 cases of granulomatous amebic encephalitis have been reported. We present an unusual case of granulomatous encephalitis in a 35-year-old man. Neurologic examination and laboratory tests were inconclusive. CT demonstrated bilateral low-density areas with mild mass effect in the cortex and subcortical white matter, which showed increased signal on T2-weighted MRI. Craniotomy and brain biopsy revealed granulomatous en

A cell-free growth medium for the opportunistic pathogenic ameba Balamuthia mandrillaris is presented. This represents an advance over the use of monkey kidney cells for growth of the amebas and can be helpful in isolation of these amebas from brain tissue from cases in which amebic meningoencephalitis is a diagnostic possibility, as well as for biochemical and molecular biological studies. Three isolates of Balamuthia have been cultured in this medium. The cell-free growth system was also used to screen cultures for sensitivity to a variety of antimicrobial agents. Of the various drugs tested

Immunization of hamsters with plasma membrane (PM) antigens of virulent subline of axenic Entamoeba histolytica (NIH: 200 V) entrapped in multilamellar phosphatidyl choline liposomes conferred 100% protection to a subsequent intrahepatic amoebic challenge. In contrast, vaccination of hamsters with live amoebic trophozoites injected intradermally failed to protect any of the animals. The protected animals had significantly high levels of anti-PM anti-amoebic antibodies, cellular sensitization and macrophage-mediated antibody-dependent cytotoxicity against amoebic trophozoites. However, none of

The cellular and antibody dependent cellular cytotoxic (ADCC) responses of splenic lymphocytes and peritoneal macrophages obtained from animals at variable intervals after inoculation were studied against trophozoites of axenic E histolytica (NIH:200). Cytotoxic responses of effector cells from infected animals were compared with those of effector cells from vaccine stimulated and unstimulated uninfected control animals. Cellular and antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxic responses of the effector cells from animals during the establishment and acute phase of infection were significantly suppre

BACKGROUND: Diarrheal disease remains a significant cause of child mortality, particularly in regions with limited access to healthcare and … he cases of AD were attributed to gastroenteritis and colitis of infectious and unspecified origin. Amebiasis and other protozoal intestinal diseases accounted for 13.37% and 1.11% of the cases, respectively. The completion rates of recording various IMCI parameters varied; parameters such as duration of diarrhea, presence of blood in stool, and evidence of …

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal illnesses (GI) continue to pose a substantial burden in terms of morbidity and economic impact in Canada. We describe the epidemiology of reportable GI in Ontario by characterizing the incidence of each reportable GI, as well as associated demographics, clinical outcomes, seasonality, risk settings, and likely sources of infection.
METHODS: Reports on laboratory confirmed cases of amebiasis, botulism, campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, cyclosporiasis, giardiasis, hepatitis A, listeriosis, paratyphoid fever, salmonellosis, shigellosis, typhoid fever, illness du…

As a result of disposal problems related to the use of mercury compounds, many laboratories have considered switching from mercuric chloride … of 161 (3.7%)] did the results involve pathogens. The patient diagnosis was missed in four cases of amebiasis and two cases of giardiasis; in both situations the organism numbers were rare. There were no discrepant results with Dientamoeba fragilis. Overall agreement between the two PVA-based results was 87.0% (140 of 161); when the instances of rare organi …

Central nervous system (CNS) infections in immunocompromised hosts are often accompanied by subtle disorders because immunosuppression usual … The most common are Toxoplasma gondii and Strongyloides stercoralis. There have been a few cases of amebiasis with dissemination to the brain in patients with hematologic malignancies. Toxoplasma gondii causes major CNS disease in immunocompromised hosts: meningoencephalitis or mass lesions.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

We report a systematic case review of antemortem neurosurgical resections and biopsies and outcomes including new lesions after procedure and survival in Balamuthia mandrillaris granulomatous amebic encephalitis. The investigation was prompted by a 5-year-old patient in the southwestern United States who was treated with nitroxoline, the 2021 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention regimen, and underwent 2 resections; initial resection site recurrence and a new lesion after resection prompted the question whether complete resection versus biopsy is associated with better outcomes. We conduc

This report describes the first documented case in Ecuador of primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri, in coinfection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) associated with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). A 23-year-old male with a history of severe traumatic brain injury developed central nervous system infection symptoms after VPS placement. Despite targeted antibiotics for MRSA, clinical deterioration continued. Whole genome sequencing confirmed N. fowleri, prompting antiparasitic treatment with amphotericin B and fluconazole, resulting in partial
