Original three-point fixation technique for sutured posterior chamber intraocular lens.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: In order to avoid the complications associated with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) scleral fixation, the authors have developed an original surgical technique by which the IOL is secured at the ciliary sulcus by suturing the haptics to the sclera in three points (at the 3, 5 and 9 o'clock positions). This technique was utilized for secondary IOL implantation in 21 aphakic eyes. The mean follow-up was 18 months, range 6-28 months. RESULTS: All eyes that underwent secondary implants had equal or better visual acuity postoperatively; none developed serious intra- o

The problems of biometry in combined silicone oil removal and cataract extraction: a clinical trial.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the problems and accuracy of biometry in eyes that have been operated on by silicone oil removal combined with cataract extraction with or without intraocular lens implantation. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine consecutive cases that have been operated on for silicone oil removal and cataract, with or without intraocular lens implantation, were included in a prospective study. Axial length measurement was done in silicone oil-filled eyes after changing the sound speed in vitreous cavity to 987 m/sec. The SRKT formula was used for intraocular lens calculation. The catarac

Acute corneal decompensation after silicone oil removal.

PURPOSE: To assess acute corneal decompensation after silicone oil removal in some aphakic eyes with clear corneas whose anterior chambers were completely filled with silicone oil for a considerable period of time. METHODS: Eight eyes of 8 patients who underwent vitrectomy and intraocular silicone oil injection were studied. All the eyes were aphakic and anterior chambers were completely filled with silicone oil. In all eyes, corneas were clear and no corneal finding indicating keratopathy was detected by slit-lamp microscopy before silicone oil removal. The mean silicone oil removal time was

Retinal vessel changes in galactose-fed dogs.

BACKGROUND: Retinal lesions similar to those in human early-stage diabetic retinopathy have been reported to occur in dogs fed galactose for long periods. Investigations of retinal changes, however, have been limited to studies of the intact retinal vasculature isolated by trypsin digestion. OBJECTIVE: To document the onset and progression of retinal lesions in galactose-fed dogs by the common clinical techniques of fundus color photography and fluorescein angiography. METHODS: Fourteen 6-month-old male beagles made aphakic in 1 eye were divided into a control group (4 dogs), receiving a die

Extracapsular cataract extraction with or without posterior chamber intraocular lenses in eyes with cataract and high myopia.

PURPOSE: To compare the results of insertion of low-power or zero-power posterior chamber intraocular lenses (PC IOLs) after cataract extraction in eyes with high myopia with leaving the eye aphakic. METHODS: The outcome of extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) with low-power or zero-power PC IOLs in 184 consecutive highly myopic (axial length = 26.0 mm or longer) eyes was compared with 184 consecutive highly myopic eyes receiving ECCE without PC IOLs. Axial length, preoperative visual acuity, age, sex, and follow-up were similar between both groups. RESULTS: In the pseudophakic eyes, the

Results and complications of secondary intraocular lens implantation.

The results and the postoperative complications of 107 secondary intraocular lens implantations were reviewed over a two-year period. In 84.1% of the cases, postoperative visual acuity was the same or better than preoperative visual acuity with aphakic glasses or contract lenses. The most frequent postoperative complications were secondary glaucoma, six cases (5.6%); cystoid macular edema, five cases (4.6%); and bullous keratopathy, three cases (2.8%).

Pneumatic retinopexy. Surgical results.

We reviewed 55 consecutive cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated with pneumatic retinopexy. Eyes with inferior retinal breaks from the 4- to 8-o'clock positions or macular holes with retinal detachment were excluded. Forty-five eyes (82%) were reattached with one operation. Although ten operations failed, nine retinas were subsequently reattached surgically, a 98% overall reattachment rate. Thirty-three (92%) of 36 phakic eyes, eight (66%) of 12 pseudophakic eyes, and four (57%) of seven aphakic retinas were reattached with one operation. In macula-off cases, phakic patients tende

Suprachoroideal haemorrhage in postoperative period of antiglaucoma surgery, case report.

Suprachoroidal haemorrhage (SCH) is a serious complication of intraocular procedures. Physiologically there is only a minimal amount of fluid in the suprachoroid space, pathologically the fluid volume increases, which causes ablation of the choroid. SCH could be divided into different cathegories, according to the character of the fluid into serous and haemorrhagic; by the time of occurrence in relation to the surgery into peroperative and postoperative. Diagnosis is based on biomicroscopic and ultrasound examinations. The ocular risk factors for SCH are glaucoma, myopia and aphakia; systemic

Rapid assessment of avoidable blindness in Western Rwanda: blindness in a postconflict setting.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization estimates that there were 37 million blind people in 2002 and that the prevalence of blindness was 9% among adults in Africa aged 50 years or older. Recent surveys indicate that this figure may be overestimated, while a survey from southern Sudan suggested that postconflict areas are particularly vulnerable to blindness. The aim of this study was to conduct a Rapid Assessment for Avoidable Blindness to estimate the magnitude and causes of visual impairment in people aged > or = 50 y in the postconflict area of the Western Province of Rwanda, which incl
