Eosinophilic myeloid disorders: new classification and novel therapeutic strategies.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this brief review is to evaluate recent developments in the classification and treatment of eosinophilic myeloid disorders in the context of reactive, lymphocyte-variant, and idiopathic eosinophilias. RECENT FINDINGS: The revised 2008 WHO classification recognizes both molecularly defined ('myeloid and lymphoid neoplasms with eosinophilia and abnormalities of PDGFRA, PDGFRB, or FGFR1') and undefined (chronic eosinophilic leukemia, not otherwise specified) eosinophilic myeloid disorders. An increasingly sophisticated understanding of the molecular underpinnings of…

[Endometrial hyperplastic changes and precancerous conditions: terminology and classification].

The paper presents the data available in the literature on the debated aspects of the terminology and classification of endometrial hyperplastic lesions, precancerous conditions of the corpus uteri. Particular emphasis is laid on the low reproducibility of the histological diagnosis of endometrial changes in accordance with the WHO criteria. Focus is on the disadvantages of a morphometric study for diagnosing endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia. The authors show it expedient to simplify the WHO classification and to adopt the uniform criteria for and terms of endometrial hyperplastic changes…

Acoustics based assessment of respiratory diseases using GMM classification.

The focus of this paper is to present a method utilizing lung sounds for a quantitative assessment of patient health as it relates to respiratory disorders. In order to accomplish this, applicable traditional techniques within the speech processing domain were utilized to evaluate lung sounds obtained with a digital stethoscope. Traditional methods utilized in the evaluation of asthma involve auscultation and spirometry, but utilization of more sensitive electronic stethoscopes, which are currently available, and application of quantitative signal analysis methods offer opportunities of improv

Clinical classification and treatment strategy of hamate hook fracture.

To explore the clinical classification of hamate hook fracture and the treatment strategy for different type of fractures, 12 patients who suffered from hamate hook fractures were followed up retrospectively. According to the fracture sites and the prognosis, we classified the hamate hook fractures into 3 types. Type I referred to an avulsion fracture at the tip of hamate hook, type II was a fracture in the middle part of hamate hook, and type III represented a fracture at the base of hamate hook. By the classification, in our series, only 1 fell into type I, 7 type II, and 4 type III. The res…

Spondyloarthritis (SpA) refers to a spectrum of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases with overlapping features, which differ from other typ … n, while hip arthritis and enthesitis are frequently seen in juvenile-onset disease. Currently, the classification of SpA in adults and children is approached differently. Using the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR) system for juvenile idiopathic arthritis, most childhood SpA is classified as enthesitis-related arthritis. However, in c …

Classification of external auditory canal cholesteatoma by computed tomography.

OBJECTIVES: We propose here a classification system for external auditory canal cholesteatoma (EACC). We classified the EACC by the computed tomography findings and clinical findings of the patients, and we evaluated the EACC characteristics by the proposed staging system. METHODS: Stage classification was done according to the results of temporal bone computed tomography and the clinical findings of the patients. Stage I indicates that the EACC lesion is limited to the external auditory canal. Stage II indicates that the EACC lesion invades the tympanic membrane and middle ear. Stage III ind…

Classification of otoneurological cases according to Bayesian probabilistic models.

We show that Bayesian methods can be efficiently applied to the classification of otoneurological diseases and to assess attribute dependencies. A set of 38 otoneurological attributes was employed in order to use a naive Bayesian probabilistic model and Bayesian networks with different scoring functions for the classification of cases from six otoneurological diseases. Tests were executed on the basis of tenfold crossvalidation. We obtained average sensitivities of 90%, positive predictive values of 92% and accuracies as high as 97%, which is better than our earlier tests with neural networks.…

Autoimmune disease classification by inverse association with SNP alleles.

With multiple genome-wide association studies (GWAS) performed across autoimmune diseases, there is a great opportunity to study the homogeneity of genetic architectures across autoimmune disease. Previous approaches have been limited in the scope of their analysis and have failed to properly incorporate the direction of allele-specific disease associations for SNPs. In this work, we refine the notion of a genetic variation profile for a given disease to capture strength of association with multiple SNPs in an allele-specific fashion. We apply this method to compare genetic variation profiles

Nonmotor fluctuations in Parkinson's disease: clinical spectrum and classification.

UNLABELLED: The majority of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) on levodopa (LD) treatment usually experience motor fluctuations (MFs) within several years of initiation of treatment. Besides the classic MFs, many nonmotor fluctuations (NMFs) may occur in PD. NMFs appear both in the "on" state and "off" state. However, the clinical spectrum and the frequency of these symptoms are not well recognized. NMFs are usually mild and less disabling than MFs but sometimes can lead to unnecessary tests and therapies. NMFs occurring in association with the "on" state are better known and therefore mor

Extremity vascular anomalies in children: introduction, classification, and imaging.

Vascular anomalies are vascular lesions noted at birth or that arise during the first months of life. The purpose of this article is to illustrate how vascular anomalies involve the extremities of infants and children. Cases illustrate the range of vascular anomalies as defined by the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies. Both clinical and imaging features of extremity vascular anomalies are discussed. A comprehensive classification that uses a simple, universal, and common terminology is presented. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging are noninvasive diagnostic tools…

A clinical classification system for aberrant internal carotid arteries.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Pronounced anatomic variations of the extracranial internal carotid artery (ICA) can be found in 5% to 6% of the general population. An aberrant ICA is at risk of injury during routine pharyngeal procedures if the vessel is placed into close relationship with the pharyngeal wall. The objective was to highlight the impact of parapharyngeal ICA aberrations and to analyze the clinical usefulness of the current anatomic classification system of these anomalies. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective quality assessment study in an academic tertiary care medical center. METHODS: A system…

Predicting outcome after emergent cerclage using classification tree analysis.

We sought to develop a predictive model for gestational age at delivery after placement of an emergent cerclage in the second trimester. Data were obtained for women undergoing emergent cerclage in response to documented cervical change on physical examination at a university hospital between 1980 and 2000. Hierarchically optimal classification tree analysis (CTA) was used to predict delivery prior to 24 weeks, between 24 and 27 6/7 weeks, or after 27 6/7 weeks. One hundred sixteen women were available for analysis. Delivery prior to 24 weeks was best predicted by presence of prolapsed membran…

Classification of hyperspectral medical tongue images for tongue diagnosis.

Human tongue is one of the important organs of the body, which carries abound of information of the health status. The images of the human tongue that are used in computerized tongue diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are all RGB color images captured with color CCD cameras currently. However, this conversional method impedes the accurate analysis on the subjects of tongue surface because of the influence of illumination and tongue pose. To address this problem, this paper presents a novel approach to analyze the tongue surface information based on hyperspectral medical tongue ima
