Pediatric Feeding Disorder in Children With Short Bowel Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize the prevalence of pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) in short bowel syndrome (SBS) and study factors contributing to the persistence of PFD. METHODS: Single-center retrospective study of patients diagnosed with SBS at age 6 months or younger. Data were collected in 3-month intervals through age 2 years, and every 6 months through age 4 years. Demographic information, anthropometric data, and details regarding nutrition support were recorded and analyzed. RESULTS: We reviewed 28 patients. Of the 21 patients who were weaned off parenteral nutrition, 57.1%, 81.

Maternal Vitamin D Levels and Its Correlation With Low Birth Weight in Neonates: A Tertiary Care Hospital Experience in Saudi Arabia.

Introduction A meta-analysis showed that 63.6% of the Saudi population have vitamin D deficiency, including many pregnant women. Studies showed that maternal vitamin D deficiency during pregnancy is a risk factor for low birth weight (LBW) in neonates. Neonatal LBW is a risk factor for multiple neonatal complications including respiratory distress syndrome, necrotizing enterocolitis, chronic renal disorders, seizures, and sepsis. Our objective in this study is to determine a correlation between low maternal vitamin D level and neonatal LBW in Saudi Arabia. Methods Neonates (n = 119) were divid

Application of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and DNA sequencing-based SLST and MLST analysis for the identification of Cronobacter spp. isolated from environmental surveillance samples.

Cronobacter spp. are emerging infectious foodborne bacteria that can cause acute meningitis and necrotizing enterocolitis in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. Although, little is known about its reservoirs or transmission routes, it has been linked to powdered infant formula worldwide. Three Cronobacter spp. (C. sakazakii, C. malonaticus, and C. turicensis) have been described as more virulent, and isolated frequently from infant meningitis cases. The estimated mortality rates are as high as 80% in infants. Thus, surveillance and typing of Cronobacter spp. isolated from food and envi

Cronobacter sakazakii ATCC 29544 Translocated Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells via Endocytosis, Apoptosis Induction, and Disruption of Tight Junction.

Cronobacter sakazakii (C. sakazakii) is an emerging opportunistic foodborne pathogen that can cause neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis, meningitis, sepsis in neonates and infants with a relatively high mortality rate. Bacterial transcytosis across the human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMEC) is vital for C. sakazakii to induce neonatal meningitis. However, few studies focus on the mechanisms by which C. sakazakii translocates HBMEC. In this study, the translocation processes of C. sakazakii on HBMEC were explored. C. sakazakii strains could effectively adhere to, invade and intracel

Role of Intestinal Alkaline Phosphatase in Innate Immunity.

Intestinal alkaline phosphatase (IAP) is a multi-functional protein that has been demonstrated to primarily protect the gut. The role of IAP in maintaining intestinal homeostasis is underscored by the observation that IAP expression is defective in many gastrointestinal-related disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease IBD, necrotizing enterocolitis, and metabolic syndrome and that exogenous IAP supplementation improves the outcomes associated with these disorders. Additionally, studies using transgenic IAP-knock out (IAP-KO) mouse models further support the importance of the defensive role

Impact of being large-for-gestational-age on neonatal mortality and morbidities in extremely premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Small for gestational age (SGA) infants have an increased risk for neonatal mortality and morbidities. However, few studies have examined the risk of large for gestational age (LGA) on these factors. We compared the risk of mortality and morbidities in LGA premature infants with those of appropriate for gestational age (AGA) infants. METHODS: Premature infants who were born between 2003 and 2012 at <26 weeks of gestational age were included. Relative risks of mortality and morbidities were evaluated between LGA and AGA infants. RESULTS: From 6898 extremely premature infants, 357

In the Short-term, Milk Fat Globule Epidermal Growth Factor-8 Causes Site-specific Intestinal Growth in Resected Piglets.

OBJECTIVES: Short bowel syndrome (SBS) remains the leading cause of neonatal intestinal failure. Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor-8 (MFG-E8), present in human milk, has homology with epidermal growth factor (EGF), known to enhance adaptation in SBS. In this pilot study, the role of oral MFG-E8 treatment in SBS was explored in neonatal piglets. METHODS: Neonatal piglets underwent 75% intestinal resection, either distal (jejunal-colonic [JC] anastomosis) or mid-intestinal (jejunal-ileal [JI] anastomosis). Piglets were randomized to intragastric treatment with MFG-E8  (5 mg/kg per day) o

Short- and long-term outcomes of very low birth weight infants in Korea: Korean Neonatal Network update in 2019.

Korea currently has the world's lowest birth rate but a rapidly inreasing number of preterm infants. The Korean Neonatal Network (KNN), launched by the Korean Society of Neonatology under the support of Korea Centers for Disease Control, has collected population-based data for very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs) born in Korea since 2013. In terms of the short-term outcomes of VLBWIs born from 2013 to 2016 registered in the KNN, the survival rate of all VLBWIs was 86%. Respiratory distress syndrome and bronchopulmonary dysplasia were observed in 78% and 30% of all VLBWIs, respectively. Necro

An Initiative to Reduce Preterm Infants Pre-discharge Growth Failure Through Time-specific Feeding Volume Increase.

UNLABELLED: Very low birth weight infants often demonstrate poor postnatal longitudinal growth, which negatively impacts survival rates and long-term health outcomes. Improving extrauterine growth restriction (EUGR) among extremely premature infants has become a significant focus of quality improvement initiatives. Prior efforts in the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center neonatal intensive care unit were unsuccessful in improving the EUGR rate at discharge. METHODS: The primary aim of this initiative was to improve EUGR at discharge [defined as weight less than 10th percentile
