OBJECTIVE: To determine the etiology of Pseudomonas aeruginosa surgical-site infections following cardiac surgery.
SETTING: University teaching hospital.
PATIENTS: Those with wound cultures that grew P. aeruginosa after cardiac surgery performed from 1999 to 2001.
METHODS: Medical records and operating room (OR) records of patients with P. aeruginosa cardiac surgical-site infections from 1999 to 2001 were reviewed. Healthcare workers involved with two or more cases were interviewed and examined. Specimens for environmental cultures were obtained from the ORs and cardiac surgical equipment.

Chronic hand eczema can be incapacitating, and there is little knowledge of the efficacy and safety of long-term treatment with topical corticosteroids. We compared the efficacy and safety of two different schedules for the treatment of chronic hand eczema with a potent topical corticosteroid, mometasone furoate. To estimate the prevalence of hand eczema, a questionnaire was distributed to 901 male car mechanics. Of the 801 persons who responded, 15% reported hand eczema on some occasion in the previous 12 months, and 57% admitted dry skin on the hands. BACKGROUND: Topical corticosteroid phobia (TOPICOP) is associated with poor treatment adherence and is common among patients with skin disease. Knowledge about corticosteroid phobia and treatment adherence among patients with chronic hand eczema (CHE) is limited.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate patient-reported outcomes regarding topical corticosteroids (TCSs), and their impact on treatment adherence in patients with CHE.
METHODS: Patients with CHE from the Danish Skin Cohort answered a questionnaire including the TOPICOP scale and Medication Adherence Report Scale. Response rate was 69.2%.

Management of hand eczema is complex because of the broad range of different pathogeneses, courses, and prognoses. Furthermore, the efficacy of most available treatments is not well established and the more severe forms can have a major impact on the patient's quality of life. Digital ulcers in systemic sclerosis are painful ischemic necrotic lesions of the acra. Optimal treatment consists of conventional wound management and medication: iloprost infusions promote primary healing of the ulcers, while the dual endothelin receptor antagonist bosentan is used for secondary prophylaxis of new ulcers. Erythema elevatum diutinum is a rare chronic inflammatory skin disease of unknown etiology with a histopathology of a leukocytoclastic vasculitis. Clinical findings involve symmetrical livid-erythematous to red-brown papules and plaques or nodules which are initially soft but become firmer. The skin lesions are located over extensor surfaces and often over joints. Early treatment with dapsone, corticosteroids and antibiotics is sometimes effective. A patient with multiple myeloma displayed unusual lesions of erythema elevatum diutinum.

Following interviews on glove-related skin symptoms, 202 subjects, 56 hospital workers at an operating theatre and 146 workers at dental care centres, were skin prick tested with different latex extracts.
