Novel psychoactive drug use among younger adults involved in US nightlife scenes.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The emergence of novel psychoactive substances has been reported in clinical studies and recent studies of users. The use of these substances in European nightlife scenes is well documented. Little research has been done to identify the prevalence of these drugs among young adults active in other regions. We focus our sample on socially active young adults to gain an indication of the prevalence and understanding of demographic factors associated with past year mephedrone ('meph', 'bath salts') and synthetic cannabinoid ('spice', 'K2') use. DESIGN AND METHODS: This stud

Prevention, chemoradiation and surgery for anal cancer.

Management of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) has remained virtually unchanged since the 1980s. By contrast, the demographics of SCCA are evolving, with the emergence of a high-risk group of patients: HIV-positive male homosexuals are prone to develop anal intra-epithelial neoplasia and rapidly progress towards invasive SCCA. By many aspects, anal cancer is similar to uterine cervix cancer - a sexually transmitted disease driven by oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Thus, for many patients, SCCA results from the combination of two preventable diseases, HPV

Gonorrhoea in Denmark: high incidence among HIV-infected men who have sex with men.

Diagnosis of gonorrhoea indicates that relatively recent unprotected sex has been practised and thus there is possibly a risk of HIV transmission. A retrospective analysis of gonorrhoea cases reported to the Danish national surveillance system was carried out for the period 1994-1999. The analysis included demographic pattern and mode of transmission of gonorrhoea in Denmark with the focus on trends and factors related to infection in men who have sex with men (MSM). We found that 646 (82.7%) reported cases of gonorrhoea were men, among whom 41.2% cases were due to sex with men, 52.9% were tra

Do dentists have sufficient information about their patients to control infection?

This study examined dentists' knowledge of infection control, what dentists say they do to control infection, and what procedures they actually take to prevent the transmission of disease. A professional actor, obviously in need of dental care and playing the part of a patient, was sent to three groups of randomly selected dentists in general practice. The dentists were uninformed subjects who were debriefed about the research immediately after their part in the experiment was completed. The study found that dentists apparently know what they should do to protect themselves from contamination.

Dermatologic findings related to human immunodeficiency virus infection in high-risk individuals.

A variety of dermatologic disorders have been associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. This prospective study reports the frequency of mucocutaneous findings in 237 individuals at high risk for HIV infection, 33 of whom were HIV seropositive, during a follow-up of 5 to 36 months; 12.1% of the study population, all of them HIV seronegative, were devoid of any pathologic changes of the skin or mucous membranes, whereas all HIV-seropositive individuals exhibited one or several pathologic conditions during the observation period. Oral candidiasis, seborrheic and infectious ecz

Neurologic disease as the presenting manifestation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

Neurologic disease was the harbinger of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in 26 (20%) of 132 patients and ultimately developed in 83 (63%). The most common neurologic disorder heralding AIDS was toxoplasmic encephalitis (17 cases) followed by cryptococcal meningitis (six), retinitis (three), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (two), neuropathy (one), myopathy (one), and subacute "viral" encephalitis (one). In four patients, more than one neurologic disorder coexisted at presentation. Recognition of underlying human T cell lymphotropic virus type III (HTLV-III) infection may

The theory of gender identity disorders.

Experience with more than 500 patients over the last decade has led to the conclusion that the quest for sex reassignment is a symptomatic compromise formation serving defensive and expressive functions. The symptoms are the outgrowth of developmental trauma affecting body ego and archaic sense of self and caused by peculiar symbiotic and separation-individuation phase relationships. The child exists in the pathogenic (and reparative) maternal fantasy in order to repair her body image and to demonstrate the interconvertability of the sexes. Gender identity exists not as a primary phenomenon, b

Hormones and psychosexual differentiation: implications for the management of intersexuality, homosexuality and transsexuality.

During fetal development of subprimate mammals, sexual differentiation of the genitals and of specific sex-dimorphic brain systems depends on androgens; corresponding sex differences are displayed in prepubertal behaviours as well as in behaviours that depend on activation by pubertal hormones. In human beings, fetal hormones play the same role in genital differentiation. Hormone-dependent structural brain changes are also very likely but have not yet been demonstrated. The corresponding effects of fetal hormones on childhood behaviour have been found both in subhuman primates and in man, whil

Sexual Orientation Differences in Health and Wellbeing Among Women Living with HIV in Canada: Findings from a National Cohort Study.

Sexual orientation differences in health and wellbeing among women living with HIV (WLH) are underexplored. Limited research available, however, suggests that sexual minority WLH may experience barriers to HIV care. Cross-sectional baseline data was analyzed from a Canadian cohort study with WLH (sexual minority women [SMW]: n = 180; heterosexual women: n = 1240). SMW (median age 38 years, IQR 13) included bisexual (58.9%), lesbian (17.8%) and other sexualities (23.3%). In multivariable analyses adjusting for age, poverty, education, and ethnicity, SMW identity was associated with increased od

Sister-sister incest: data from an anonymous computerized survey.

Retrospective data were entered anonymously by 1,521 adult women using a computer-assisted self-interview. Thirty-one participants were victims of sister-sister incest, 40 were victims of brother-sister incest, 19 were victims of father-daughter incest, 8 were victims of sexual abuse by an adult female (including one mother), and 232 were victims of sexual abuse by an adult male other than their father before reaching 18 years of age. The rest (1,203) served as controls. The victims of sister-sister incest had significantly more problematic outcomes than controls on many measures as adults. Vi

"Out of sight": Sexuality and women with enduring mental illness.

Sexuality is a complex and fundamental aspect of a person's health and mental well-being, yet mental health professionals generally seem reluctant to discuss sexuality related issues and few research studies have specifically explored the sexuality of women with enduring mental illness. The aim of this qualitative research was to gain a deeper understanding about the sexuality experiences of this group of women. Eight women were interviewed individually, and then together as a focus group. Working from a feminist theoretical perspective, the interview transcripts were analysed thematically. Al

Families of the lesbian baby boom: children's contact with grandparents and other adults.

In an exploratory study of 37 lesbian-mother families, the frequency of children's contact with adults in their extended family and friendship networks was found to counter stereotypes of such children as isolated from parents' families of origin. Children were more likely to have regular contact with relatives of the biological than nonbiological mother. Mothers rated those in regular contact with grandparents as having fewer behavior problems, and those in more regular contact with unrelated adults rated themselves more positively on general well-being.

Psychosocial adjustment among children conceived via donor insemination by lesbian and heterosexual mothers.

This study examined the relations among family structure (e.g., number of parents, parental sexual orientation), family process (e.g., parents' relationship satisfaction, interparental conflict), and the psychological adjustment of children who had been conceived via donor insemination. The 80 participating families, all of whom had conceived children using the resources of a single sperm bank, included 55 families headed by lesbian and 25 families headed by heterosexual parents. Fifty families were headed by couples and 30 by single parents. Participating children averaged 7 years of age. Res

Penile human papilloma virus (HPV) in high risk populations with and without HIV: Epidemiological insights from Argentina.

BackgroundHuman papillomavirus (HPV) is a common sexually transmitted infection, with higher prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) and people who self-identify as transgender women (PSTGW). High-risk genotypes (hrHPV) carry oncogenic potential. This study assessed hrHPV prevalence in penile samples from MSM and PSTGW in Buenos Aires, Argentina.MethodsA cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a longitudinal study was conducted. Participants aged ≥18 were recruited from an HIV prevention center. Penile samples, collected via standardized sandpaper exfoliation, were analyzed usi

Sexual Behaviour, HIV Prevention and Testing Among Transgender and Non-binary People in a Cross-Sectional Behavioural Surveillance Survey in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Trans and non-binary (TNB) people who have sex with gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBM) are rarely included in HIV behavioural surveillance. Improved data on risk and protective behaviours among TNB people could help identify unmet needs. We analysed data from the Sex and Prevention of Transmission Study, a cross-sectional HIV behavioural surveillance programme in Aotearoa New Zealand that extended eligibility to TNB participants for the first time in 2022. We categorised TNB participants who reported sex with GBM < 5 years into four groups: trans women (TW), trans men (TM)
