Rebuilding health and human services: a call to strategic planning and action.

The capacity of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has been substantially reduced since early 2025. This has included staffing cuts on a scale not seen in decades, delays in implementing billions of dollars in grants, and other disruptions to normal operations, all of which have received considerable public coverage and attention. To date, far less public attention has been given to rebuilding efforts. This commentary presents recommendations for rebuilding HHS' lost capacity, following a series of roundtable discussions convened by a network of former senior HHS appointees

Bioimpedance Measurement for Monitoring Chronic Wounds: A Systematic Review.

Chronic wounds decrease patients' quality of life and pose an economic burden on healthcare systems and individuals. Wound assessment tools and monitoring technologies may reduce the costs related to chronic wound management. Bioimpedance has attracted growing attention as a quantitative tool for monitoring chronic ulcers, owing to its proven ability to detect tissue changes throughout the wound healing process. The main objective of this study was to review the state-of-the-art literature on the use of bioimpedance in chronic wound monitoring. A systematic review of literature was performed o

A systematic review and meta-analysis for the efficacy of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in OCD treatment: A non-pharmacological approach to clinical interventions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a prevalent mental condition characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions), significantly disrupting daily functioning and social interactions. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) presents a promising non-invasive treatment modality aimed at alleviating symptoms. However, the evidence regarding its effectiveness remains inconclusive. This study seeks to address this gap by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials, offering improved guidance for clinical intervention.

Alpine salamanders at risk? The current status of an emerging fungal pathogen.

Amphibians globally suffer from emerging infectious diseases like chytridiomycosis caused by the continuously spreading chytrid fungi. One is Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) and its disease ‒ the 'salamander plague' ‒ which is lethal to several caudate taxa. Recently introduced into Western Europe, long distance dispersal of Bsal, likely through human mediation, has been reported. Herein we study if Alpine salamanders (Salamandra atra and S. lanzai) are yet affected by the salamander plague in the wild. Members of the genus Salamandra are highly susceptible to Bsal leading to the leth

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever epidemiological indicators and spatiotemporal analysis in China from 2004 to 2019.

Typhoid and paratyphoid fever are systemic infections caused by Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella Paratyphi. These diseases are endemic in many parts of China, occurring periodically throughout the year. Epidemiological features, temporal trends, and spatial distribution of these fevers were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 9 with data collected by China's Public Health Science Data Center from 2004 to 2019. Charts were generated to depict their incidence across provinces, years, age groups, and occupations. Spatial clustering was assessed using ArcGIS 10.5 and Moran's I index. SaTScan 9.5 was empl

Facial surface electromyography: A systematic review on the state of the art and current perspectives.

PURPOSE: Peripheral facial nerve palsy is a severely disabling condition. In current clinical practice, the commonest tools to assess facial palsy are grading scales, digital face image analyses or facial muscle electrophysiology. However, these techniques suffer from subjectivity or invasiveness and cannot be applied as part of a routine clinical assessment. Therefore, novel non-invasive office-based tools are needed. Surface electromyography (sEMG) may potentially fulfill the requirements of objectivity, low examiner-dependence, and minimal invasiveness. The aim of this systematic review is

A Scoping Review Investigating Relationships between Depression, Anxiety, and the PrEP Care Continuum in the United States.

Men who have sex with men and transgender women in the United States are at increased risk for HIV and may benefit from pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), a once-a-day pill to prevent HIV. Due to stigma and discrimination, sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations are also at risk for depression and anxiety. This scoping review sought to identify literature addressing relationships between the PrEP care continuum, depression, and anxiety among SGM individuals and others at high risk for HIV. We conducted a systematic review of four databases (i.e., PubMed, PsycInfo, Web of Science, Google Sch

Diels-Alder Cycloaddition with CO, CO2, SO2, or N2 Extrusion: A Powerful Tool for Material Chemistry.

Phenyl, naphthyl, polyarylphenyl, coronene, and other aromatic and polyaromatic moieties primarily influence the final materials' properties. One of the synthetic tools used to implement (hetero)aromatic moieties into final structures is Diels-Alder cycloaddition (DAC), typically combined with Scholl dehydrocondensation. Substituted 2-pyranones, 1,1-dioxothiophenes, and, especially, 1,3-cyclopentadienones are valuable substrates for [4 + 2] cycloaddition, leading to multisubstituted derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and other aromatics. Cycloadditions of dienes can be carried out with extru

Infectious Agents and Stroke: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: A major cause of injury and the second cause of death worldwide is stroke. Among several infectious agents considered as the risk factor of stroke, some pathogens demonstrated stronger robust associations with stroke. Proposing an accurate correlation between infectious microorganisms and stroke provides valuable information for early intervention and control of the infections. METHODS: In this study, we searched the literature using the Web of Science, PMC/Medline via PubMed, and Scopus databases up to July 2018 without time and language restrictions. After quality assessment,
