[Validation of the French version of the situational characteristics questionnaire in the measurement of space and motion discomfort].

INTRODUCTION: Space and motion discomfort (SMD) refers to various symptoms that occur in environments with unreliable visual and kinesthetic information that do not permit adequate spatial orientation. Some studies have demonstrated that there is a stable and predictable relationship between vestibular dysfunction and anxiety disorders. Further, vestibular dysfunction can predispose or trigger the development of panic disorder with or without agoraphobia (PD/A) or reinforce phobic avoidance. It therefore seems clinically useful to develop and validate instruments for evaluating SMD in various

The value of risks scores for predicting postoperative nausea and vomiting when used to compare patient group in a randomised controlled trial.

Whilst conducting a randomised controlled trial into the effects of combination anti-emetics, we endeavoured to confirm that our patient groups were matched using the predictive scoring systems for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and postoperative vomiting (POV) reported in the literature. One hundred and seventy-seven female patients attending for day case gynaecological surgery were studied and their individual risks of PONV and POV were calculated using four predictive models for PONV and two predictive models for POV. The scoring systems were then evaluated to see if agreement exi

[Physiological evaluation of vestibular training load].

Objective. To evaluate the effects of vestibular training by observing the variations of the physiological indices. It is helpful in grasping the training load, setting down and implementing the training plan. Method. 10 healthy subjects received linear acceleration, continuous Coriolis acceleration and discontinuous Coriolis acceleration stimuli on different dates. The stimulus was stopped when there were slight autonomic nervous symptoms, ECG, EGG and BP were recorded before during and after the stimuli. Computerized Dynamic Posturography (correction of Postrograph) (CDP) was tested before a

Effect of Acupuncture on the p38 Signaling Pathway in Several Nervous System Diseases: A Systematic Review.

Acupuncture is clinically used to treat various diseases and exerts positive local and systemic effects in several nervous system diseases. Advanced molecular and clinical studies have continually attempted to decipher the mechanisms underlying these effects of acupuncture. While a growing understanding of the pathophysiology underlying several nervous system diseases shows it to be related to inflammation and impair cell regeneration after ischemic events, the relationship between the therapeutic mechanism of acupuncture and the p38 MAPK signal pathway has yet to be elucidated. This review di

The Effects of Training on Anxiety and Task Performance in Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: In commercial spaceflight, anxiety could become mission-impacting, causing negative experiences or endangering the flight itse … 38.1, mean 25.1 ± 3.7). There were 10 subjects who withdrew or limited their G exposure; history of motion sickness was associated with opting out. Shorter length training programs were associated with elevated hemodynamic responses. Single-directional G training did not significantly improve tolerance. DISCUSSION: Training programs appear best when high fidelit …

Action of anti-tussive drugs on the emetic reflex of Suncus murinus (house musk shrew).

The cough and emetic reflexes involve a synchronized firing of motor neurones involved in respiratory control. Tachykinin NK1 receptor antagonists and 5-HT1A receptor agonists are examples of centrally acting drugs that reduce cough and emesis. In the present studies, therefore, we examined the possibility that other classes of drugs known to reducing cough have anti-emetic properties to prevent emesis induced by diverse challenges. We examined the potential of codeine (1-10 mg/kg), baclofen (1-10 mg/kg), scopolamine (0.3-10 mg/kg), diphenhydramine (1-10 mg/kg), imperialine (1-30 mg/kg) and ve

European Astronaut Candidates in training in the CIS.

For four weeks in October and November 1992, we--three European Astronaut Candidates from the European Astronauts Centre (EAC) in Cologne--were fortunate enough to have the opportuity to live and be trained in Star City. It proved to be a fascinating experience, both for us and the EAC Training Engineer, Antonio Torres, who accompanied us.

Early detection of subclinical ketosis and clinical diseases in dairy cows using peripartum motion activity.

Early detection of metabolic diseases like subclinical ketosis (SCK) and other disorders is crucial for animal welfare and economic efficiency. Automated monitoring systems become increasingly important here. This study examined motion activity of cows around calving and its suitability for early detection of SCK and clinical disorders. Activity data of 136 cows were collected over two weeks before to three weeks after calving and analyzed alongside blood test results for beta-hydroxybutyric acid (BHBA). Cows were categorized as clinically sick (S) or healthy (H), with group H further subdivid

Reversible sick sinus syndrome due to sinus node artery ischaemia in an elderly woman: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Sick sinus syndrome often necessitates permanent pacemaker implantation; however, when sinus node artery ischaemia is the cause, sinus node dysfunction may be reversible. While age-related fibrosis is generally considered the main mechanism, ischaemia should also be recognized as a potential aetiology. CASE SUMMARY: An 80-year-old woman with breast cancer, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus presented with dyspnoea. Electrocardiography showed marked bradycardia at 38 beats per minute (b.p.m.) without ST-segment changes. Chest radiography revealed a cardiothoracic ratio of 61% with

Interactive and passive mixed reality distraction: effects on cold pressor pain in adults.

While interactive distractors are predicted to be more effective in reducing acute pain than passive distractors, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Previous work using Virtual-Reality (VR) has suggested that interactive distraction may be enhanced by increasing the person's sense of immersion. Despite the possible utility of immersive VR in reducing pain, some people report being disoriented and motion sick, and it doesn't allow for interactions with environment (e.g., following instructions from medical staff). Here, we explore the role of the immersion in the effectiveness

Travel Medical Kit.

"The traveler's medical kit is an essential tool for both the novice and expert traveler. It is designed to treat travel-related illness and injury and to ensure preexisting medical conditions are managed appropriately. Travelers are at increased risk for common gastrointestinal issues during travel. Respiratory illnesses make up approximately 8% of the ailments present in returned international travelers. Approximately 12% of travelers experience a travel-related skin condition. First aid treatment for minor injuries is essential to all travel medical kits. The complexity ranges from a small,

Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in clinical use of scopolamine.

The alkaloid L-(-)-scopolamine [L-(-)-hyoscine] competitively inhibits muscarinic receptors for acetylcholine and acts as a nonselective mus … anesthesia and for antiemetic effects. This alkaloid is the most effective single agent to prevent motion sickness. Scopolamine was the first drug to be made commercially available in a transdermal therapeutic system (TTS-patch) delivering alkaloid. Recently, pharmacokinetic data on scopolamine in different biozlogic matrices were obtained most efficiently using …
