Breakdown and exclusion of superinfecting T-even bacteriophage in Escherichia coli.

In bacterial strains containing the deoxyribonuclease endonuclease I (endonuclease I(+) strains), 70 to 80% of the injected superinfecting T-even phage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is rapidly degraded to oligonucleotides having an average chain length of 8, the same value as that obtained by endonuclease I digestion of purified T-even phage DNA in vitro. In endonuclease I(-) strains, less than 5% of the injected superinfecting T-even phage DNA is degraded to acid-soluble components. The superinfecting phage DNA is, however, fragmented into a large segment having a molecular weight of about 90 x

ON THE MECHANISM OF MILK SECRETION : THE INFLUENCE OF INSULIN AND PHLORIDZIN.

The four types of experiments on milk secretion herein described really fall into one general class so far as the physiological effects produced are concerned. Starvation lowers the blood sugar and raises the osmotic pressure of the blood. The experiment using parathyroid hormone with or without starvation may have its effects interpreted as simply due to starvation since 1000 units of this hormone produced no visible effects on the blood calcium or milk constituents different from those of starvation. Since insulin produces a marked and rapid drop in blood sugar it too may be looked upon as a

The role of ethanolamine phosphate phospholyase in regulation of astrocyte lipid homeostasis.

Dietary lipid composition has been shown to impact brain morphology, brain development, and neurologic function. However, how diet uniquely regulates brain lipid homeostasis compared with lipid homeostasis in peripheral tissues remains largely uncharacterized. To evaluate the lipid response to dietary changes in the brain, we assessed actively translating mRNAs in astrocytes and neurons across multiple diets. From this data, ethanolamine phosphate phospholyase (Etnppl) was identified as an astrocyte-specific fasting-induced gene. Etnppl catabolizes phosphoethanolamine (PEtN), a prominent headg

Plant-based diets to manage the risks and complications of chronic kidney disease.

Traditional dietary recommendations for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) focus on the quantity of nutrients consumed. Without appropriate dietary counselling, these restrictions can result in a low intake of fruits and vegetables and a lack of diversity in the diet. Plant nutrients and plant-based diets could have beneficial effects in patients with CKD: increased fibre intake shifts the gut microbiota towards reduced production of uraemic toxins; plant fats, particularly olive oil, have anti-atherogenic effects; plant anions might mitigate metabolic acidosis and slow CKD progression

Circulating leptin and adiponectin levels in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) has been associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and mortality; its pathogenesis is not fully understood. Moreover, many metabolic abnormalities are frequently present in patients with PHPT. Several substances (such as leptin and adiponectin) are secreted from adipocytes, which may contribute to regulate energy homeostasis and the development of cardiovascular diseases. We examined the relationship between leptin and adiponectin levels and metabolic disorders in 67 newly diagnosed never-treated patients with PHPT and in 46 healthy subjects (HS). Twenty

Synergistic bioremediation of metolachlor-contaminated soil by Penicillium oxalicum MetF1 and earthworms: Enhanced degradation, microbial community restructuring, and ring-opening metabolic activation.

The chloroacetamide herbicide metolachlor (MET) is a widespread environmental contaminant posing risks to aquatic and soil ecosystems. Although the fungal strain Penicillium oxalicum MetF1 efficiently degrades MET in liquid culture, its performance in complex soil environments remains unexplored. Recognizing the multifunctional roles of earthworms as soil ecosystem engineers-including their capacity to modulate microbial activity and pollutant bioavailability-we incorporated Eisenia fetida into a synergistic bioremediation system with P. oxalicum MetF1 in MET-contaminated soil. The synergistic

Long-Term Vineyard Cultivation Reshapes Soil Organic Phosphorus Speciation, Phosphatase Activities, and phoC- and phoD-Harboring Bacterial Communities.

Organic phosphorus (OP) transformation in perennial vineyards is strongly influenced by long-term cultivation, fertilization, and associated changes in soil properties. However, the relationships among soil OP speciation, phosphatase activities, and phoC- and phoD-harboring bacterial communities remain poorly understood. In this study, soils from 20-year-old vineyards (Y20) and adjacent uncultivated reference sites (CK) in Penglai, China, were compared. Soil available P was significantly higher in Y20 than in CK, increasing from 15.83 to 40.50 mg kg-1, whereas total P, OP, and microbial biomas

Genetically Engineered Membrane-Mimetic Liposome-Wrapped Violet Phosphorus Nanoplatform for Targeted Synergistic Ferroptosis/Photothermal/Immunotherapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), a highly prevalent malignancy, is mostly diagnosed at intermediate and advanced stages. Current monotherapies are limited by poor targeting, severe toxicity, drug resistance, and high metastatic risk, necessitating more effective precision therapeutic strategies. Photothermal therapy (PTT) and ferroptosis induction are promising for HCC treatment, but violet phosphorus nanoparticles (VPNs) alone confer limited PTT efficacy, while the ferroptosis inducers RSL3 and sulfasalazine (SSZ) are hampered by poor aqueous solubility, low biostability, and off-target toxici

Unlocking the Zn-enriching potential of industrial yeast strains-an experimental journey from metal analysis to proteomics.

Nutritional supplements such as trace element-enriched yeasts are becoming increasingly popular to overcome the worldwide problem of zinc (Zn) deficiency. Unlike selenium-enriched yeast, which is already authorized in the European Union, Zn-enriched yeasts (ZnY) have not yet been approved for food purposes in the European Union, as their evaluation is still ongoing, demanding more comprehensive data regarding the Zn species present in ZnY. This study screens ten different industrial yeast strains regarding their Zn-enrichment quota, with further characterization of selected strains using spect

Large mammalian herbivores influence the deployment of microbial extracellular enzymes to control soil carbon cycling.

UNLABELLED: Large mammalian grazers have regulated biogeochemical cycles across 40% of the Earth's terrestrial surface for millennia. While grazer effects on organic matter entering the soil are becoming clear, their effect on the downstream microbial foraging through extracellular-enzymes (EE), which link processes at the cellular level to ecosystem-level flow of matter remain less clear. We assessed how large mammalian grazers influence microbial foraging in soil using two lines of evidence. First, utilising a 14-year-old long-term grazer-exclusion experiment in the Trans-Himalayan ecosystem

RED light promotes flavonoid and phenolic accumulation in Cichorium spp. callus culture as anti-candida agent.

Chicory species, particularly Cichorium endive Supp. Pumillum, also, known as Egyptian chicory, are globally recognized for their rich content of bioactive secondary metabolites such as flavonoids and phenolics. These metabolites are highly valued for their pharmaceutical, dietary, and commercial applications. Light exposure, particularly through red and blue wavelengths, is a potent natural elicitor that influences the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and impacts plant morphology. This study investigates the effects of red and blue LED light exposure on the callus culture of Egyptian chi

Molecular Phosphide Complexes of Zirconium.

Molecular ZrIV phosphides are extremely rare, with no examples containing a one-coordinated and terminal triple-bonded phosphorus atom. We report here an isolable and relatively stable Zr phosphide complex, [(PN)2Zr≡P{μ2-Na(OEt2)}]2 (4), stemming from a cyclometalated Zr-hydride, [(PN)(PN')Zr(H)] (2), and NaPH2. Complex 2 is prepared from two- or one-electron reductions of precursors [(PN)2ZrCl2] (1) or metastable ZrIII[(PN)2ZrCl], respectively. Oxidation of 2 with ClCPh3 (2 equiv) or I2 (1 equiv) resulted in re-formation of the PN ligand and isolation of the ZrIV complexes [(PN)2ZrX2] (X = Cl

'BRS Vitoria' Grapes Across Four Production Cycles: Morphological, Mineral, and Phenolic Changes.

The 'BRS Vitoria' grape has sensory characteristics that favor its consumption. However, different rootstocks and harvest periods can directly influence its phenolic composition, physicochemical and morphological characteristics, and mineral content. This study evaluates the mineral and anthocyanin composition of the 'BRS Vitoria' grape from a production cycle (PC1: 'IAC 572' rootstock, main harvest) and compares its physicochemical, morphological, and mineral characteristics to other cycles (PC2: 'Paulsen 1103' rootstock, second harvest; PC3: 'IAC 572' rootstock, second harvest; and PC4: 'Pau
