Oxalate as an Emerging Contributor to Cardiovascular Disease: Links to Inflammation, Immunity, and Oxidative Stress.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world's leading cause of death and continues to rise in prevalence, contributing to healthcare and economic costs. Following diagnosis, patients are advised to adopt medication regimens, increase physical activity, and modify dietary intake to reduce disease progression and prevent additional comorbidities. Oxalate is a small molecule in plant-derived foods such as spinach, potatoes, almonds, and peanuts and is also produced endogenously. Although oxalate is traditionally studied in the context of kidney stone disease, recent evidence suggests that it may be

Plant-Derived Terpenes as Emerging Therapeutics Against Schistosomiasis.

Schistosomiasis remains one of the most significant neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) worldwide, sustained by the complex biology of Schistosoma species and the host's immunopathological responses to tissue-trapped eggs. Despite decades of reliance on praziquantel (PZQ) as the sole chemotherapeutic option, major limitations persist, including its lack of activity against juvenile worms, incomplete protection against reinfection, and concerns regarding emerging tolerance. These challenges, together with persistent hotspots of transmission and uneven global progress toward disease elimination,

Honokiol enhances the antibacterial efficacy of doxycycline against Vibrio parahaemolyticus by membrane disruption and confers protective efficacy in Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei).

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major bacterial pathogen in shrimp aquaculture, and the development of new anti-infective strategies is urgently needed due to limited protective options. In this study, we report that the plant-derived compound honokiol (HKL) acts as an effective adjuvant to doxycycline (DOX) against V. parahaemolyticus. Checkerboard assays revealed an additive interaction between HKL and DOX (FICI = 0.5625), accompanied by a 16-fold reduction in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of DOX from 64 μg/mL to 4 μg/mL. Plate-count-based time-kill analysis showed that the HKL-DOX

The potential of plant-derived vesicles in treating periodontitis and associated systemic diseases: current advances and future directions.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis, a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease, represents a significant public health burden among global chronic non-communicable diseases. In addition to affecting oral health, periodontitis is closely associated with a variety of systemic diseases. Current treatments, including surgical and nonsurgical therapies, lack clear superiority, underscoring the need for innovative therapeutic strategies. Plant-derived vesicles (PDVs), as natural products, have the advantages of being highly biocompatible, rich in biologically active components, and easy to cross biologica

Polygonati Rhizoma polysaccharide suppresses microglial activation and promotes functional recovery of spinal cord via improving intestinal microbiota.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) can disrupt the gut microbiome and metabolites, impacting prognosis, substantially impairing quality of life, and leading to high socioeconomic costs (Jing et al., 2021). Recent studies indicate that plant polysaccharides exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and immune-enhancing properties, contributing positively to various neurological disorders; however, their role in SCI remains uncertain (Hou et al., 2020 [2]; Aswini et al., 2021 [3]; Dou et al., 2019 [4]). Polygonati Rhizoma polysaccharide (PRP) has shown anti-inflammatory and immunoregulatory effects, but i

Common features in the gut microbiota of underweight and overweight individuals and patients with Parkinson's disease - a mini-review.

This study explores the complex relationship between gut microbiota composition, body weight, and Parkinson’s disease (PD). Recognizing that microbiota profiles vary across Body Mass Index (BMI) categories: underweight, normal weight, and overweight, here we investigate how these differences may correlate with PD pathogenesis and the severity of the disease. The findings highlight common dysbiotic features, such as increased pro-inflammatory bacteria, observed in both PD and obesity, suggesting the involvement of shared inflammatory pathways in disease development. Conversely, all three groups

Candida.

Among the millions of species in the fungal kingdom, fewer than 300 cause disease in humans, compared to the tens of thousands that cause disease in plants, insects, and ectothermic vertebrates. While the number of 'pathogenic' species is relatively small, fungal infections remain one of the leading threats to human health. Vulnerable populations with compromised immunity face the highest risk of serious infection, with over 2.5 million individuals succumbing to systemic fungal infections annually. Invasive candidiasis caused by Candida species is the leading cause of mycotic death worldwide,

A replicon-based COVID-19 vaccine candidate delivered by tobacco mosaic virus-like particles.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the opportunity for mRNA vaccines and their nanotechnology carriers to make an impact as a countermeasure to infectious disease. As alternative to the synthetic lipid nanoparticles or mammalian viruses, we developed a tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)-based mRNA vaccine delivery platform. Specifically, purified coat protein from TMV was used to package a self-amplifying Nodamura replicon expressing the receptor binding domain (RBD) from the Omicron strain of SARS-CoV-2. The replicon construct contains the origin of assembly sequence from the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV)

Bufadienolides as bioorganic anticancer agents: Mechanistic insights into apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and signal pathway modulation.

Bufadienolides, a group of C-24 steroidal compounds found in toad venom and certain plants, have emerged as promising candidates for anticancer drug development due to their broad-spectrum cytotoxicity and multitargeted molecular mechanisms. These compounds demonstrate a range of biological effects, including the induction of apoptosis and autophagy, inhibition of metastasis and angiogenesis, and modulation of the tumor immune microenvironment. Mechanistically, bufadienolides influence critical signaling cascades such as PI3K/Akt, MAPK, and NF-κB, and also affect cell cycle regulation and mito

Piperine suppresses M1 phenotype and induces indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase gene in LPS-stimulated murine macrophage cell line.

OBJECTIVE: Activated macrophages play important roles during immune responses by polarizing into M1 and M2 subsets and overproducing several mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO). This study aims to investigate the possible effects of piperine, a major component of the pepper plant, on the expression of M1 and M2 macrophage markers. RESULTS: Piperine dose-dependently decreased iNOS gene expression and NO level in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Additionally, at concentrations of 1-20 µg/ml, it significantly suppressed the

Petroselinic Acid from Apiaceae Family Plants Ameliorates Autoimmune Disorders Through Suppressing Cytosolic-Nucleic-Acid-Mediated Type I Interferon Signaling.

The recognition of cytosolic nucleic acids is a critical step in the host immune response against danger signals, such as molecular patterns from pathogens or tissue damage. Nonetheless, over-reactivity to self-nucleic acids leads to the sustained production of type I interferon (IFN), mediated either by cGAS or RLR, contributing to the pathogenesis of certain autoimmune diseases, such as Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS). Therefore, inhibiting excessive IFN production represents a potential therapeutic strategy for such autoimmune conditions. In this study, we discovered that petroselinic acid

Effects of incompletely degraded galactomannan on growth performance and immune function of cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed broilers.

Intensive broiler farming frequently leads to immunosuppression, causing substantial economic losses. Galactomannan, derived from various plants, exhibits potent immunoregulatory properties; however, its bioavailability is limited by its high molecular weight and complex structure. In this study, we prepared incompletely degraded galactomannan (IDGM) from Sesbania seeds using an enzymatic method and explored its effects on growth performance and immune function in cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced immunosuppressed broilers. Our results showed that IDGM significantly increased (P < 0.05) the avera

Graminan-type fructans mitigate the noxious effects in gut cells exerted by the Giardia virulence factor arginine deiminase in a fructan-specific fashion: A multi-cell approach.

Graminan-type fructans (GTFs) derived from Agave plants exhibit significant health benefits, including preservation of the intestinal barrier, attenuation of proinflammatory responses, and antimicrobial effects. These properties position them as promising candidates for addressing gut health challenges. We hypothesize that these fructans may play a crucial role in countering Giardia lamblia, the protozoan responsible for giardiasis, a disease that ranges from asymptomatic colonization to chronic intestinal disorders. This pathogen employs virulence factors such as arginine deiminase (GlADI) to
