Allergy-related disorders (ARDs) among Ethiopian primary school-aged children: Prevalence and associated risk factors.

BACKGROUND: There has been a noticeable increase in the prevalence of allergy-related disorders (ARDs) in the modern era. Urbanization is believed to be a major environmental risk factor for the onset of ARDs but data from low- to middle-income countries is limited. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess the prevalence of ARDs and atopy among a population of rural Ethiopian school children and identify environmental and lifestyle factors associated with such disorders. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study on 541 school-children. An interviewer-led questionnaire administered to the mot

A Cochrane review of the evidence for non-surgical interventions for flexible pediatric flat feet.

The pediatric flat foot is a frequent presentation in clinical practice, a common concern to parents and continues to be debated within professional ranks. As an entity, it is confused by varied classifications, the notion of well-intended prevention and unsubstantiated, if common, treatment. The available prevalence estimates are all limited by variable sampling, assessment measures and age groups and hence result in disparate findings (0.6-77.9%). Consistently, flat foot has been found to normally reduce with age. The normal findings of flat foot versus children's age estimates that approxim

Knowledge attitudes and practices of grade three primary schoolchildren in relation to schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminthiasis and malaria in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Helminth infection rates in grade three children are used as proxy indicators of community infection status and to guide treatment strategies in endemic areas. However knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) of this target age group (8-10 years) in relation to schistosomiasis, soil transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) and malaria is not known at a time when integrated plasmodium - helminth control strategies are being advocated. This study sought to assess KAP of grade 3 children in relation to schistosomiasis, STHs and malaria in order to establish an effective school based health ed

An overview of hip injuries in running.

Running has steadily gained in worldwide popularity and is the primary exercise modality for many individuals of all ages. Its low cost, versatility, convenience and related health benefits appeal to men and women of broad cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. With more children and adults participating in recreational and competitive running, the incidence of injuries has steadily increased. Most running-related injuries affecting the lower extremities are due to preventable training errors, and some may necessitate medical evaluation or a significant reduction in training. Hip injuries

Onychomycosis. Treatment, quality of life, and economic issues.

Onychomycosis is a public health concern because of its high worldwide incidence and prevalence, and its potential for spread of fungal elements to others, as well as complications such as cellulitis, bacterial infection, pain, and extensive dermatophytic infections. The incidence of onychomycosis has been increasing, particularly in individuals over 60 years of age, patients with HIV infection, and patients with diabetes mellitus. Onychomycosis may impact upon physical, functional, psychosocial, and emotional aspects of life. Difficulty walking, wearing shoes, and embarrassment are common com

Mid-term Patient-Reported Outcomes Following Isolated Gastrocnemius Recession for Recalcitrant Plantar Fasciitis.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with plantar fasciitis experience symptom relief with nonoperative management. However, a subset remains refractory to conservative treatments and may benefit from surgical intervention. Prior studies support the use of isolated gastrocnemius recession, demonstrating favorable short-term outcomes and low complication rates. Herein we assessed the outcomes following an isolated gastrocnemius recession for recalcitrant plantar fasciitis extended to midterm outcomes (36-89 months). METHODS: Eighty-eight patients who underwent isolated gastrocnemius recession for recalci

Angular Improvement with Bracing Over 7 Years in Anterolateral Tibial Bowing without Neurofibromatosis Type 1: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital anterolateral bowing of the tibia is a rare dysplasia of the tibia that is strongly associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (Nf1). It produces two deformities, angulation and limb shortening, which are usually reported together and corrected surgically. We report a child without NF1, managed non-operatively, in whom these two courses diverged: The angular deformity improved while the shortening did not. To the best of our knowledge, this dissociation has not previously been documented over more than7 years of continuous non-operative management in a prenatally detecte

The predictive value of cumulative plantar tissue stress on future plantar foot ulceration in people with diabetes-A 12-month prospective observational study.

AIMS: Plantar foot ulcers are a burdensome complication of diabetes caused by abnormal foot biomechanics. Predicting foot ulcers aids in their prevention, but the value of peak pressure-the most used biomechanical parameter-is only moderate. We aimed to improve prediction based on the more comprehensive load measure cumulative plantar tissue stress (CPTS). METHODS: We prospectively observed 60 participants with diabetes at high foot ulcer risk for 12 months. At baseline, we assessed demographic and clinical characteristics-including plantar pre-ulcers (i.e., abundant callus, haemorrhage, blis

[Navicular bone fractures in horses: Prognosis after conservative and surgical treatment].

The aim of this retrospective study is to describe and compare conservative and surgical treatment of navicular fractures in horses. An attempt is made to identify critical points that can favorably influence the prognosis of this orthopedic disease. All horses treated for a navicular fracture at the Equine Clinic, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich between 2005 and 2017 were included in this study. The severity of lameness at initial examination, radiographic assessment, hoof conformation, treatment (conservative or surgical), complications and outcome were determined from the medical re

Effects of prolonged brisk walking induced lower limb muscle fatigue on the changes of gait parameters in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Lower extremity muscle fatigue affects gait stability and increases the probability of injuries in the elderly. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does prolonged walking-induced fatigue affect lower limb muscle activity, plantar pressure distribution, and tripping risk? METHODS: Eighteen elderly adults walked fast on a treadmill for 60 minutes at a fixed speed. The plantar pressure was measured with an in-shoe monitoring system, eight lower limb muscles were monitored using surface electromyography, and foot movements were tracked by a motion capture analysis system. The above data and parti

Low back pain in a sample of Syrian pregnant women: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Low back pain related to pregnancy occurs in 60%-70% of pregnancies, at any time during pregnancy. During pregnancy, many factors such as weight gain, and others are the causes of the back pain. In Syria, due to the circumstances of the war, many pregnant women may be exposed to increase the risk of lower back pain, so this study will determine the prevalence of lower back pain among pregnant women and its potential risk factors. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of low back pain in pregnant women and to assess the risk factors related to it. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observ

Total Talar Replacement for Idiopathic Osteonecrosis of the Talus: Investigation of Clinical Outcomes, Pain, ADL, QOL.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of osteonecrosis of the talus is challenging. Nonoperative management includes nonweightbearing treatment. Various types of hindfoot fusion procedures have been performed, but delayed union and shortening of the operated leg have reportedly occurred. In contrast, talar body prosthesis is a surgical procedure with potential that relieves pain, restores ankle joint function, and is not associated with leg-length discrepancy. The aim of this study was to investigate postoperative pain, clinical outcomes, activities of daily living (ADL), and quality of life (QOL) after total

Converting 1st metatarsophalangeal joint fusion to interposition arthroplasty. Mid-term results of a case series.

BACKGROUND: Fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint has been considered as the gold standard for treatment of advanced hallux rigidus. The main disadvantage is the restriction of movement which may not be as favorable as anticipated by several patients. The purpose of this study was to report clinical and functional outcomes on patients who were treated with interposition arthroplasty after a 1st MTP joint fusion which had not fulfilled their expectations. METHODS: Between 2009 and 2014, 11 patients who were not satisfied by 1st MTP joint fusion for hallux rigidus, underwent a con
