Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disorder with a chronic clinical course that requires long-term glucocorticoid (GC) therapy. A drug efflux pump, P-glycoprotein (P-gp), actively transports GC out of target cells, thereby reducing its efficacy. We evaluated the P-gp function of peripheral-blood mononuclear cells in 59 MG patients. Autoimmune enteropathy is an increasingly recognized cause of severe protracted diarrhea, usually affecting infants and children predisposed to autoimmune phenomena. Although this may be a common cause of diarrheal illness, it is scarcely recognized in the American literature. In association with thymoma, a case of so-called graft-vs-host-like colitis and 2 cases of chronic diarrhea associated with thymoma were reported, but, to our knowledge, no cases of autoimmune enteropathy have been reported as such. We describe 2 adults with autoimmune enteropathy found in association with a thymoma.

A 38-year-old patient presented with an anterior mediastinal mass after chemotherapeutic and surgical treatment for lung metastases from a malignant histiocytoma. Because of the risk for tumour recurrence the thymic mass was resected. Thymic hyperplasia was found on pathological examination. In this case thymic hyperplasia is a rebound phenomenon aflcer chemotherapy. It appears to atrophy during the administration of chemotherapy and regrow afterwards. Surgical resection provides the definitive diagnosis and treatment.

After administration of indomethacin, an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis, the number of splenic T cells increased in normal mice but not in adult-thymectomized or athymic nude mice. The enlarged T-cell population consisted mainly of Lyt-1+2+ cells.
