Attention and memory in the preclinical stage of dementia.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether attention may be specifically impaired in Alzheimer's disease from the early stages of the disease. Subgroups of patients with different types of mild cognitive impairment were selected according to standard criteria. Patients and controls were given tasks exploring various subcomponents of attention and executive functions. Only subgroups of mild cognitive impairment characterized by memory disorders obtained lower scores than controls on attention and executive tasks. On the basis of the scores obtained on the Clinical Dementia Rating at the 1

Specific AD impairment in concurrent performance of two memory tasks.

The current study examined the hypothesis that patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have a selective deficit in the coordination mechanism of the central executive, which is reflected in their inability to coordinate the performance of two tasks concurrently. One criticism of the previous studies in the literature is that they employ tasks that do not necessarily draw upon the separate peripheral mechanisms within working memory but combine a memory load with a perceptuomotor load. Therefore, the aim of the study was to examine the effects of AD and healthy adult ageing on a verbal memory pl

The acute effects of mild traumatic brain injury on finger tapping with and without word repetition.

This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) on the performance of a finger tapping and word repetition dual task in order to determine working memory impairment in mTBI. Sixty-four (50 male, 14 female) right-handed cases of mTBI and 26 (18 male and 8 female) right-handed cases of orthopaedic injuries were tested within 24 hours of injury. Patients with mTBI completed fewer correct taps in 10 seconds than patients with orthopaedic injuries, and female mTBI cases repeated fewer words. The size of the dual task decrement did not vary between groups. Whe

Knowing where and knowing what: a double dissociation.

We report a double dissociation between visuo-spatial abilities and semantic knowledge (knowledge of the names and attributes of objects and people), in two brain-injured people with longstanding stable impairments, using a wide range of tests to explore the extent of the dissociation, MU, who has bilateral lesions of occipito-parietal cortex, shows severe spatial disorientation with relatively well-preserved semantic knowledge. He is contrasted with JBR, who has bilateral temporal lobe damage and shows severe semantic problems and no impairment on visuo-spatial tasks. Our findings thus demons

Effectiveness of sexual health influencers identified by an ensemble machine learning model in promoting secondary distribution of HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in China: study protocol for a quasi-experimental trial.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST), especially the secondary distribution of HIVST (SD-HIVST) initiated by sexual health influencers (SHIs), has been recognized as an effective strategy in promoting HIV testing, especially among men who have sex with men (MSM). This quasi-experimental study aimed to evaluate whether SHIs identified through the ensemble machine learning approach can distribute more HIVST than those who identified by the empiricalscale. METHODS: We will recruit eligible adults (≥18 years old) who were assigned male gender at birth, and willing to participate in potential SD-H

Targeting Treatment-Resistant Auditory Verbal Hallucinations in Schizophrenia with fMRI-Based Neurofeedback - Exploring Different Cases of Schizophrenia.

Auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) are a hallmark of schizophrenia and can significantly impair patients' emotional, social, and occupational functioning. Despite progress in psychopharmacology, over 25% of schizophrenia patients suffer from treatment-resistant hallucinations. In the search for alternative treatment methods, neurofeedback (NF) emerges as a promising therapy tool. NF based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) allows voluntarily change of the activity in a selected brain region - even in patients with schizophrenia. This study explored effects of NF on

The cerebellar cognitive affective/Schmahmann syndrome scale.

Cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome (CCAS; Schmahmann's syndrome) is characterized by deficits in executive function, linguistic processing, spatial cognition, and affect regulation. Diagnosis currently relies on detailed neuropsychological testing. The aim of this study was to develop an office or bedside cognitive screen to help identify CCAS in cerebellar patients. Secondary objectives were to evaluate whether available brief tests of mental function detect cognitive impairment in cerebellar patients, whether cognitive performance is different in patients with isolated cerebellar lesion

Cerebral Artery Pulsatility is Associated with Cognitive Impairment and Predicts Dementia in Individuals with Subjective Memory Decline or Mild Cognitive Impairment.

The concept that excess pulsation in cerebral arteries might be involved at the early stage of dementia is based on the results of studies on aorta stiffness. In these studies, aorta stiffness is cross-sectionally associated with cognitive impairment and longitudinally related to cognitive decline in non-demented subjects. However, a direct measure of cerebral artery pulsatility is absent in the literature. We aimed to investigate the associations between cerebral artery pulsatility and (1) different cognitive-domains and (2) conversion to dementia in non-demented individuals at the prodromal-

Cognitive dysfunction after fast-track hip and knee replacement.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is reported to occur after major surgery in as many as 20% of patients, elderly patients may especially experience problems in the weeks and months after surgery. Recent studies vary greatly in methods of evaluation and diagnosis of POCD, and the pathogenic mechanisms are still unclear. We evaluated a large uniform cohort of elderly patients in a standardized approach, after major joint replacement surgery (total hip and knee replacement). Patients were in an optimized perioperative approach (fast track) with multimodal opioid-sparing anal

Cholesterol in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease in a birth cohort over 14 years.

Animal epidemiological and clinical studies suggest that cholesterol is a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Nevertheless, the relation of cholesterol to mild cognitive impairment (MCI), influence of APOE genotype and its changes in lifespan is controversial. We investigated the potential impact of plasma total cholesterol (TC) on development of MCI and AD in the interdisciplinary longitudinal study on adult development and aging, a representative birth cohort (born 1930-1932), examined in 1993/1994 (VT1), 1997/1998 (VT2), and 2005/2007 (VT3). Of 500 participants at baseline, 381 surviv

Cannabis use and premorbid functioning as predictors of poorer neurocognition in schizophrenia spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Evidence of associations between neurocognitive function and cannabis use in schizophrenia is inconclusive. However, direct measures of cannabis intake and premorbid function are rarely explored in this context. We investigated the relation between cannabis use, determined by its presence in urine, and neurocognitive functioning in schizophrenia controlling for the potential bias of premorbid functioning. METHODS: Naturalistic study of 364 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorder from catchment areas in Oslo, Norway. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were used to asse

Theory of mind and verbal working memory deficits in parents of autistic children.

The objective of this study was to investigate the potential values of executive function and social cognition deficits as endophenotypes of autism. While theory of mind (ToM) is generally accepted as a unitary concept, some have suggested that ToM may be separated into two components (mental state reasoning and decoding). In this study, both aspects of ToM and verbal working memory abilities were investigated with relatively demanding tasks. The authors used a neurocognitive battery to compare the executive function and social cognition skills of 76 parents of autistic probands with 41 parent

Separation of risks and benefits of seafood intake.

BACKGROUND: Fish and seafood provide important nutrients but may also contain toxic contaminants, such as methylmercury. Advisories against pollutants may therefore conflict with dietary recommendations. In resolving this conundrum, most epidemiologic studies provide little guidance because they address either nutrient benefits or mercury toxicity, not both. OBJECTIVES: Impact on the same health outcomes by two exposures originating from the same food source provides a classical example of confounding. To explore the extent of this bias, we applied structural equation modeling to data from a

The effect of growth hormone substitution on cognitive performance in adult patients with hypopituitarism.

OBJECTIVE: Adult hypopituitary patients with growth hormone deficiency, though on adequate adrenal, thyroid or sex hormone replacement therapy, complain of attention and memory disabilities. During the past years several studies have evidenced that growth hormone (GH) may exert distinctive effects on the central nervous system and induce beneficial effects on psychological capabilities. The aim of our study was to determine whether a long-term replacement therapy of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) affects cognitive performance in adults with GH deficiency. DESIGN: A double-blind, rand

A 12-week study on the effects of betahistine (an H₃ antagonist/H₁ agonist) on cognitive functions in schizophrenia patients treated with olanzapine.

Evidence on betahistine for cognitive impairment in schizophrenia is limited. This study evaluated its feasibility, safety, and preliminary efficacy to lay the groundwork for future randomized controlled trials. Thirty-one inpatients with schizophrenia, aged 18-60 years, undergoing treatment with olanzapine received betahistine (16 mg, three times daily) for 12 weeks. Cognitive function, clinical symptoms, and side effects were assessed at baseline and again at 12 weeks postintervention. After 12 weeks of betahistine treatment, patients with schizophrenia showed a significant increase in the t
