Abnormal auditory evoked potentials in Déjérine-Sottas disease. Report of two cases with central acoustic and vestibular impairment.

Two cases of hereditary motor sensory neuropathy type III (Déjérine-Sottas disease) examined by audiological, vestibular and electrophysiological methods are reported. In both cases there were signs of vestibular and acoustic central pathway involvement, shown by vestibular examination and by the study of auditory evoked potentials. The presence of central involvement in this hereditary neuropathy suggests central as well as peripheral myelin alteration.

Effects of short-duration spaceflight on the execution of critical mission tasks.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate how short-duration spaceflight affects private astronauts' performance of mission-critical functional tasks that challenge balance and locomotor control systems shortly after they return to Earth. METHODS: Ten astronauts were assessed while they performed three functional tests (sit-to-stand, tandem walk, and walk-and-turn) before spaceflight and a few hours after returning from missions lasting from 4 to 21 days. Their performance was compared to that of 36 astronauts who returned from long-duration missions lasting from 6 to 12 mont

Clinical characteristics of patients with multi-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

INTRODUCTION: Multi-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is considered to be a rare and controversial type in the new diagnostic guidelines of Bárány because the nystagmus is more complicated or atypical, which is worthy of further study. OBJECTIVE: Based on the diagnostic criteria for multi-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo proposed by International Bárány Society, the study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of multi-canal benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. METHODS: A total of 41 patients with multi-canal benign paroxysmal positiona

Baseline Performance on Concussion Assessments of Athletes Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

CONTEXT: In the United States, more than 71 000 college students, many of whom participate in athletic programs, are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HoH). Although recent concussion consensus statements have recommended different management for special populations, critical knowledge gaps remain regarding baseline concussion performance in athletes who are D/HoH. OBJECTIVE: To compare baseline concussion assessments between athletes who are D/HoH and athletes who are hearing. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Collegiate athletic department. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: A total of 128 N

The limits of stability in patients with Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the ability of patients with unilateral Ménière's disease (MD) to reach the corresponding limits of stability and to define the existence of directional constraints. PATIENTS: 112 patients with unilateral MD and 30 normal age-matched subjects with no history of equilibrium problems. METHODS: A computerized dynamic posturography system was used to test the ability of subjects to displace their centre of pressure (COP) to the corresponding limits of stability. The eight targets used were separated by 45 degrees to form a circle around the subject who had to displace the

Analysis of causes for late presentation of Indian patients with vestibular schwannoma.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the causes of delay in diagnosis and treatment of Indian patients with vestibular schwannomas. METHODS: In a prospective study from 2003 to 2005, 50 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of vestibular schwannoma were interviewed to determine the causes for (1) the delay between the patient noting the initial symptom and the definitive diagnosis, and (2) the reasons for delayed diagnosis. RESULTS: In 90 per cent of patients, the initial symptom was either hearing loss (62 per cent), vertigo (24 per cent) or tinnitus (4 per cent). However, most patients had been diagnosed

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo involving each semicircular canal.

PURPOSE: We have investigated vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) as a function of age and the involvement of each of the 3 semicircular canals in patients with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed prospective assessment from January 2005 to September 2006. Vestibular evoked myogenic potential was measured in 53 patients with BPPV and 84 healthy subjects, with the latter subdivided by patient age. RESULTS: The subgroup of healthy subjects older than 60 years showed significantly more prolonged p13 and n23 latencies and lower amplitude tha

[Kearns-Sayre syndrome from the otorhinolaryngologic viewpoint].

External ophthalmoplegia, retinal pigmentary degeneration and heart block constitute the trias of Kearns-Sayre's syndrome. The aetiology of this disorder of oxidative metabolism is unknown. This syndrome must be more frequent than described. In the ENT field there is an extensive lack of differentiated data. Central neural and peripheral hearing disorders and vestibular disorders are in fact significant, as are also dysphagia, hoarseness and dysarthria in consequence of central and peripheral disorders in muscular function. The authors report on ENT findings in 4 patients with verified Kearns-

A clinical pathologic study of hearing loss in congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is currently reported as the most common cause of congenital viral induced deafness. However, few systematic studies of the audiovestibular sequelae of this infection are present in the literature. A clinical pathologic study was conducted from 1976 to 1982 to evaluate this. Fifty-two pairs of infant and children's temporal bone studied demonstrated no evidence of CMV endolabyrinthitis even in the single case with evidence of extensive congenital CMV infection. Over 2,000 umbilical cord sera were screened to detect asymptomatic CMV infection with an incidence of

Central auditory processing disorders after mild traumatic brain injury.

Auditory processing disorders are common following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but the neurocircuitry involved is not well understood. The present study used functional MRI to examine auditory cortex activation patterns during a passive listening task in a normative population and mTBI patients with and without clinical central auditory processing deficits (APD) as defined by the SCAN-3:A clinical battery. Patients with mTBI had overall patterns of lower auditory cortex activation during the listening tasks as compared to normative controls. A significant lateralization pattern (pairwi

Similar phenotypes caused by mutations in OTOG and OTOGL.

OBJECTIVES: Recently, OTOG and OTOGL were identified as human deafness genes. Currently, only four families are known to have autosomal recessive hearing loss based on mutations in these genes. Because the two genes code for proteins (otogelin and otogelin-like) that are strikingly similar in structure and localization in the inner ear, this study is focused on characterizing and comparing the hearing loss caused by mutations in these genes. DESIGN: To evaluate this type of hearing, an extensive set of audiometric and vestibular examinations was performed in the 13 patients from four families

Preoperative computerized dynamic posturography as a prognostic indicator of balance function in patients with acoustic neuroma.

We conducted a study to determine the prognostic reliability of preoperative computerized dynamic posturography (CDP) in patients undergoing surgical excision of an acoustic neuroma. Our goal was to determine the correlation between objective preoperative assessments of balance function and subjective postoperative patient self-assessments. To that end, we retrospectively reviewed the records of 21 adults who had undergone preoperative CDP, and we subsequently obtained their subjective assessments of balance function by follow-up telephone surveys at least 1 year postoperatively. We conclude t
