Development of rule-based eye-hand-decoupling in children and adolescents.

In the present study, we characterize how the ability to decouple guiding visual information from a motor action emerges during childhood and adolescence. Sixty-two participants (age range 8-15 yrs.) completed two eye-hand coordination tasks. In a direct interaction task, vision and motor action were in alignment, and participants slid their finger along a vertical touch screen to move a cursor from a central target to one of four peripheral targets. In an eye-hand-decoupled task, eye and hand movements were made in different planes and cursor feedback was 180° reversed. We analyzed whether mo

Observational Clinical Studies of Human Lens Transparency Using the Vision Index Pen.

PURPOSE: Preventing or delaying the onset of presbyopia and cataract formation remains a challenge. The goal of this study was to establish the utility of the Vision Index Pen (VIP), designed to measure in vivo dynamic light scattering (DLS) from the crystalline lens, in the detection of early cataract or loss of accommodation and to show reproducibility through trials at two independent sites. The gradual loss of transparency of the lens was characterized by the lens crystallin aggregation index (LCX) derived from measured DLS data. METHODS: Volunteers in different age groups participated in

Metacognition of visuomotor decisions in conversion disorder.

Motor conversion disorder (CD) entails genuine disturbances in the subjective experience of patients who maintain they are unable to perform a motor function, despite lack of apparent neurological damage. Abilities by which individuals assess their own capacities during performance in a task are called metacognitive, and distinctive impairment of such abilities is observed in several disorders of self-awareness such as blindsight and anosognosia. In CD, previous research has focused on the recruitment of motor and emotional brain systems, generally linking symptoms to altered limbic-motor inte

Clinical Observation of Patients with Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy Before Gene Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy is a hereditary mitochondrial disease. No effective treatment has so far been established, with gene therapy currently being the most promising. Because of the possibility of spontaneous visual acuity recovery in this disease, we screened patients before gene therapy, excluding those with spontaneous visual acuity improvement, and prepared for the subsequent gene therapy. OBJECTIVE: To clinically observe the course of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy for 6 months prior to gene therapy. METHODS: Sixty-six patients with Leber's hereditary opti

Human papillomavirus prevalence and type-specific distribution of high- and low-risk genotypes among Malagasy women living in urban and rural areas.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer (CC) is the most common cancer among sub-Saharan African women. Efficient, global reduction of CC will only be achieved by incorporation of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination into existing programmes. We aimed to investigate the overall and type-specific prevalences and distributions of oncogenic HPVs. METHODS: A total of 1081 women aged 30-65 years were recruited to three sequential studies in Madagascar. Demographic and historical data were obtained from participants, and specimens were self-collected for HPV testing using real-time polymerase chain reaction.

Long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in high-risk newborns in resource-limited settings: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Improving outcomes beyond survival for high-risk newborns in resource-limited settings is an emerging challenge. Global estimates demonstrate the scale of this challenge and significant gaps in morbidity outcome data in high mortality contexts. A systematic review was conducted to document the prevalence of neurodevelopmental impairment in high-risk newborns who were followed up into childhood in low- and middle-income countries. METHODS: High-risk newborns were defined as low, very or extremely low birthweight, preterm infants or those surviving birth asphyxia or serious infectio

3D visual discomfort predictor: analysis of horizontal disparity and neural activity statistics.

Being able to predict the degree of visual discomfort that is felt when viewing stereoscopic 3D (S3D) images is an important goal toward ameliorating causative factors, such as excessive horizontal disparity, misalignments or mismatches between the left and right views of stereo pairs, or conflicts between different depth cues. Ideally, such a model should account for such factors as capture and viewing geometries, the distribution of disparities, and the responses of visual neurons. When viewing modern 3D displays, visual discomfort is caused primarily by changes in binocular vergence while a

Comparative Evaluation of EfficientNet-B3, Vision Transformers, and RETFound for Seven-Category Retinopathy Fundus Image Classification.

Background/Objectives: Retinal fundus photography is the most widely available means of screening for sight-threatening disease, but it is difficult to read: several conditions leave overlapping signs on the same photograph, the features that separate them are often subtle and confined to small regions of the retina, and a single image carries no systemic context, so an automated reader must resolve categories on which experienced clinicians themselves agree only moderately. Methods: We compared five deep learning architectures-EfficientNet-B3, DenseNet-121, ViT-Base/16, Inception-V3, and RETF

Technological Interventions for Medication Adherence in Adult Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Medication adherence is critical to the effectiveness of psychopharmacologic therapy. Psychiatric disorders present special adherence considerations, notably an altered capacity for decision making and the increased street value of controlled substances. A wide range of interventions designed to improve adherence in mental health and substance use disorders have been studied; recently, many have incorporated information technology (eg, mobile phone apps, electronic pill dispensers, and telehealth). Many intervention components have been studied across different disorders. Furthermo

The role of intervention timing and treatment modality in visual recovery following pituitary apoplexy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pituitary apoplexy has historically been considered an emergent condition that necessitates surgical intervention when there is acute symptomatic onset. This potentially serious condition often occurs in the setting of an underlying adenoma, cystic lesion, or other sellar mass. When these mass lesions hemorrhage within the confined space of the sella turcica, the pituitary gland is subjected to hemorrhagic ischemia. Furthermore, critical neurovasculature in close proximity to the sella can sustain collateral damage. In the present study, we investigate whether early versus delaye

Congenital cataract: a guide to genetic and clinical management.

UNLABELLED: Worldwide 20,000-40,000 children with congenital or childhood cataract are born every year with varying degrees and patterns of lens opacification with a broad aetiology. In most cases of bilateral cataract, a causative genetic mutation can be identified, with autosomal dominant inheritance being most common in 44% of cases. Variants in genes involve lens-specific proteins or those that regulate eye development, thus giving rise to other associated ocular abnormalities. Approximately 15% of cases have systemic features, hence paediatric input is essential to minimise comorbidities

Combining transfer learning with retinal lesion features for accurate detection of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a late microvascular complication of Diabetes Mellitus (DM) that could lead to permanent blindness in patients, without early detection. Although adequate management of DM via regular eye examination can preserve vision in in 98% of the DR cases, DR screening and diagnoses based on clinical lesion features devised by expert clinicians; are costly, time-consuming and not sufficiently accurate. This raises the requirements for Artificial Intelligent (AI) systems which can accurately detect DR automatically and thus preventing DR before affecting vision. Hence, such s

Awareness of Diabetes and Risk Factors for Diabetic Retinopathy Among Patients Attending the Eye Outpatient Department of a Tertiary Care Centre in Northeast India.

Introduction Over half a billion individuals worldwide suffer from diabetes mellitus (DM). Among people of working age, diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness and one of the most prevalent side effects of DM. DR screening and care in this part of the country are severely hampered by a lack of awareness of the consequences of diabetes and by infrequent screening, especially among individuals with diagnosed diabetes. The present study aims to assess the awareness of DM and its risk factors for DR and to identify the associated factors among patients attending the eye outpati

Advanced glaucoma disease segmentation and classification with grey wolf optimized U -Net++ and capsule networks.

UNLABELLED: Early detection of glaucoma represents a vital factor in securing vision while the disease retains its position as one of the central causes of blindness worldwide. The current glaucoma screening strategies with expert interpretation depend on complex and time-consuming procedures which slow down both diagnosis processes and intervention timing. This research adopts a complex automated glaucoma diagnostic system that combines optimized segmentation solutions together with classification platforms. The proposed segmentation approach implements an enhanced version of U-Net++ using dy
