Method operable design region obtained with a partial least squares model inversion in the determination of ten polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection.

A chromatographic method with the Analytical Quality by Design (AQbD) methodology is developed for the simultaneous determination by HPLC-FLD of ten PAHs (naphthalene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo[a]anthracene, perylene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene), widely spread in the environment. The construction of the Method Operable Design Region (MODR) is conducted, for the first time, via the inversion of a multiresponse Partial Least Squares (PLS2) model, which is needed to maintain the correlations among the Critical Method Parameters (CMP), among the

Head Kinematics and Injury Metrics for Laboratory Hockey-Relevant Head Impact Experiments.

Investigating head responses during hockey-related blunt impacts and hence understanding how to mitigate brain injury risk from such impacts still needs more exploration. This study used the recently developed hockey helmet testing methodology, known as the Hockey Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk (Hockey STAR), to collect 672 laboratory helmeted impacts. Brain strains were then calculated from the according 672 simulations using the detailed Global Human Body Models Consortium (GHBMC) finite element head model. Experimentally measured head kinematics and brain strains were used to c

Excited States from State-Specific Orbital-Optimized Pair Coupled Cluster.

The pair coupled cluster doubles (pCCD) method (where the excitation manifold is restricted to electron pairs) has a series of interesting features. Among others, it provides ground-state energies very close to what is obtained with doubly occupied configuration interaction (DOCI), but with a polynomial cost (compared with the exponential cost of the latter). Here, we address whether this similarity holds for excited states by exploring the symmetric dissociation of the linear H4 molecule. When ground-state Hartree-Fock (HF) orbitals are employed, pCCD and DOCI excited-state energies do not ma

New Insights into the Crystallographic Disorder in the Polymorphic Forms of Aspirin from Low-Frequency Vibrational Analysis.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is applied to two polymorphs of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), and the experimental spectra are compared to lattice dynamical calculations using high accuracy density functional theory. The calculations confirm that forms I and II have very close energetic and thermodynamic properties and also that they show similar spectral features in the far-infrared region, reflecting the high degree of similarity in their crystal structures. Unique vibrational modes are identified for each polymorph which allow them to be distinguished using THz-TDS measuremen

First morphogenetic analysis of parasite eggs from Schistosomiasis haematobium infected sub-Saharan migrants in Spain and proposal for a new standardised study methodology.

Schistosomiasis is a Neglected Tropical Disease caused by trematode species of the genus Schistosoma. Both, autochthonous and imported cases of urogenital schistosomiasis have been described in Europe. The present study focuses on eggs, considered pure S. haematobium by genetic characterisation (intergenic ITS region of the rDNA and cox1 mtDNA). A phenotypic characterisation of S. haematobium eggs was made by morphometric comparison with experimental populations of S. bovis and S. mansoni, to help in the diagnosis of S. haematobium populations infecting sub-Saharan migrants in Spain. Analyses

Integrating Stereoscopic Video with Modular 3D Anatomic Models for Lateral Skull Base Training.

Introduction  Current virtual reality (VR) technology allows the creation of instructional video formats that incorporate three-dimensional (3D) stereoscopic footage.Combined with 3D anatomic models, any surgical procedure or pathology could be represented virtually to supplement learning or surgical preoperative planning. We propose a standalone VR app that allows trainees to interact with modular 3D anatomic models corresponding to stereoscopic surgical videos. Methods  Stereoscopic video was recorded using an OPMI Pentero 900 microscope (Zeiss, Oberkochen, Germany). Digital Imaging and Comm

Rationale and design of a prospective, observational study for the QUantitative EStimation of Thrombus burden in patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction using micro-computed tomography: the QUEST-STEMI trial.

BACKGROUND: Although the presence of thrombus in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) has been linked to adverse outcomes, routine thrombus aspiration has not been proven effective. A potential explanation is that these patients should be risk-stratified. Traditional clinical, laboratory and angiographic parameters used in clinical trials have been proven inadequate to classify patients. Aspirated thrombotic material characteristics might be an additional important parameter that has not yet been addressed. In this report, we aim to describe a methodological analysis of thr

Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Postlicensure Observational Studies on Human Papillomavirus Vaccination and Autoimmune and Other Rare Adverse Events.

BACKGROUND: Because of the limited number of subjects in prelicensure studies, autoimmune diseases and other rare adverse effects of vaccines may go undetected. Since 2006, millions of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine doses have been distributed and a considerable amount of postlicensure safety data has been generated. The objective of this study was to review available HPV postlicensure safety studies and to summarize risk estimates of autoimmune and other rare diseases. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched literature databases to identify any postlicensure sa

A machine-learning framework for robust and reliable prediction of short- and long-term treatment response in initially antipsychotic-naïve schizophrenia patients based on multimodal neuropsychiatric data.

The reproducibility of machine-learning analyses in computational psychiatry is a growing concern. In a multimodal neuropsychiatric dataset of antipsychotic-naïve, first-episode schizophrenia patients, we discuss a workflow aimed at reducing bias and overfitting by invoking simulated data in the design process and analysis in two independent machine-learning approaches, one based on a single algorithm and the other incorporating an ensemble of algorithms. We aimed to (1) classify patients from controls to establish the framework, (2) predict short- and long-term treatment response, and (3) val

Clinical laboratory and dispersion pattern of COVID-19 in a family cluster in the social-distancing period.

INTRODUCTION: Since the first reports of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in December 2019, the disease has spread worldwide. Different social isolation strategies have been adopted to reduce community transmission, but few studies have evaluated the pattern of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) infection in a family cluster during periods of isolation. We report an outbreak in 24 members of a family cluster during a period of social distancing. METHODOLOGY: We carried out an observational descriptive study of a family cluster infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Pernambuc

The molecular mechanism involved in cardioprotection by the dietary flavonoid fisetin as an agonist of PPAR-γ in a murine model of myocardial infarction.

The methodology exploring the cardioprotective potential of the flavonoid Fisetin through its ability to modulate PPAR-γ was unraveled in the present study. Computational modelling through molecular docking based binding study of interactions between Fiestin and PPAR-γ revealed the potential role of Fisetin as an agonist of PPAR-γ. A murine model of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury was used to explore this further. Male Wistar Rats were randomly assigned to five groups. Fisetin (20 mg/kg; p. o) was administered for 28 days. Ischemia was induced for 45 min on the 29th day followed by 60 min

[Comparative assessment of mineral metabolism in shoulders and crura in patients with osteomyelitis.].

Chronic osteomyelitis in long tubular bones is generally aggravated by metabolic imbalance in patients' organisms affecting mineral metabolism. It is critically important that the extent of this imbalance should be determined prior to surgical intervention to choose optimal methodology, proper monitoring of recovery and adequate prognostication of final results. With this in mind a comparative assessment has been carried out to shed light on the intensity of mineral metabolism in the blood serum of patients suffering from osteomyelitis in their shoulders and crura. Dynamics of how indices of e
