Fermentation impact: A comparative study on the functional and biological properties of Banana peel waste.

Banana fruit is a highly consumed and widely cultivated world food crop that generates plenty of waste globally. In this work, the phytochemical, nutritional, scavenging and therapeutic potentials of banana peel (BP) extracts were compared before and after fermentation. Halophilic fungi (Alternaria alternata, Pleosporaceae spp., Fusarium culmorum) were used in fermentation media designated as fermented banana peel FBP1, FBP2, and FBP3, respectively. Phytochemical coumarins, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, quinones, flavonoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins and steroids were found in all ex

Effects of a microbial treatment of Lactobacillus casei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus plantarum on blueberry fruit quality, rhizosphere soil properties, and bacterial communities.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial amendments are increasingly used in sustainable crop production, but it remains unclear whether their application is accompanied by coordinated changes in fruit traits, rhizosphere soil conditions, and resident bacterial communities in blueberry cultivation. This study examined whether microbial culture treatment was associated with concurrent changes in blueberry fruit performance, rhizosphere soil chemical properties, and bacterial community characteristics. METHODS: Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. cv. Duke) plants receiving no microbial treatment (NT) we…

Viroid ecology in hops (Humulus lupulus L.): high prevalence in commercial systems but low presence in wild populations.

INTRODUCTION: Hop (Humulus lupulus L.), a vital crop in the brewing industry, is increasingly threatened by infections caused by viroids and viruses. The extensive use of vegetative propagation in hop cultivation facilitates the accumulation and dissemination of these pathogens. However, little is known about their prevalence and ecological behavior in non-commercial settings. This study provides a comprehensive overview of viroid and virus infections across Germany, with particular attention to their occurrence and potential transmission across commercial, settlement, and wild hop populations

Developmental and Molecular Insights into AgNO3-Induced Partial Masculinization and Stamen Abortion in Siraitia grosvenorii C. Jeffrey ex A.M. Lu and Zhi Y. Zhang.

This study focuses on Siraitia grosvenorii, an economically important crop endemic to Guangxi Province, China, with significant value in both the pharmaceutical and food industries. However, its dioecious reproductive system results in low natural pollination efficiency, necessitating reliance on costly artificial pollination in commercial production, which severely constrains large-scale cultivation and the breeding of improved varieties. Herein, we systematically investigated the molecular mechanisms of silver nitrate (AgNO3)-induced partial masculinization of female flowers, resulting in th

The Molecular Characterization and Functional Analysis of Pomacea canaliculata Boule: A Central Player in Spermatogenesis and Male Fertility.

Boule is the ancestral member of the Deleted in Azoospermia (DAZ) family and is pivotal for gametogenesis and male fertility in most animals. However, there is a dearth of information on molluscan boule. Here, we identified a counterpart (Pcbol) from the genome of Pomacea canaliculata, which has emerged as a cosmopolitan alien species and notorious pest that causes devastating damage to aquatic biodiversity, freshwater ecosystems and crop production in invaded ranges. This study aimed to investigate the biological roles of Pcbol in male reproduction and to decipher the molecular mechanisms und…

Nitric oxide application alleviates fungicide and ampicillin co-exposure induced phytotoxicity by regulating antioxidant defense, detoxification system, and secondary metabolism in wheat seedlings.

Pesticides and antibiotics usually sink into soil, posing serious phytotoxic effects on plants. However, studies are elusive regarding the phytotoxic effects of fungicide Consento (CON) and antibiotic ampicillin (AMP) co-exposure. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important plant signaling molecule known for abiotic stress tolerance in plants. This study investigated the phytotoxic effects of CON and/or AMP on the growth and antioxidant activities of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seedlings and unveiled the underlying mechanisms induced by the application of NO as sodium nitroprusside (SNP; 100 μM) in whe

Modulation of metal transporters, oxidative stress and cell abnormalities by synergistic application of silicon and titanium oxide nanoparticles: A strategy for cadmium tolerance in rice.

Heavy metals, especially cadmium (Cd), cause severe toxicity symptoms in crop plants. Applying nanoparticles (NPs) as nano-fertilizers is a novel approach to mitigating plants' Cd stress. However, knowledge about the combinational use of silicon (Si) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) NPs to mitigate Cd stress, especially in rice, must be highlighted. TiO2-NPs (15 mg L-1) and Si-NPs (2.5 mM) were applied alone and in combination to rice plants grown without (control; no Cd stress) and with (100 μM) Cd concentration. Results revealed that compared to the control plants, root length, shoot length, shoo

Plant tissue analysis as a tool for predicting fertiliser needs for low cyanogenic glucoside levels in cassava roots: An assessment of its possible use.

The use of plant tissue analysis as a tool for attaining low cyanogenic glucoside levels in cassava roots, has hardly been investigated. Just as the quality of crops is improved through the use of plant tissue analysis, the same can probably be done to consistently attain the lowest possible cyanogenic glucoside levels in cassava roots. High levels of cyanogenic glucosides in consumed fresh cassava roots or in their products have the potential of causing cyanide intoxication, hence the need to lower them. An experiment was thus conducted to assess the occurrence of meaningful relationships bet

Temporal dynamics of photosynthetic inhibition, antioxidant defense, and transcriptomic reprogramming in 'Crimson Seedless' grapevine under saline-alkali stress.

Soil salinization alkalization is among the most critical abiotic stressors affecting crop productivity yet the molecular physiological mechanisms governing grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) responses to combined saline-alkali stress remain poorly understood. This study investigated the temporal dynamics of 'Crimson Seedless' grapevine plants propagated from cuttings. Integrated morphological transcriptomic physiological data were collected over a 15-day period of progressive saline-alkali stress. The results showed that saline-alkali stress affected photosynthesis in two phases. During the initia
