The Outcome of Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking in Patients with Advanced Progressive Keratoconus: A 2-Year Follow-up Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of collagen cross-linking (CXL) in advanced progressive keratoconus with a maximum keratometry (Kmax) value of more than 58 diopters (D). METHODS: This prospective interventional case series involved patients with advanced progressive keratoconus with a Kmax of more than 58 D. The best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), Kmax, mean keratometry (Kmean) value, corneal astigmatism, and thinnest corneal thickness before surgery and 24 months after CXL were determined for 30 eyes of 27 patients. Nanoparticles decorated carbon nanotubes as novel matrix: A comparative study of influences of immobilization on the catalytic properties of Lensculinarisβ-galactosidase (Lcβ-gal).

In the present study, Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) decorated with two different nanoparticles namely tungsten disulfide (WS2) and tin oxide (SnO2), nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized via hydrothermal method. Spectroscopic studies showed that both synthesized NCs possess nearly same functional groups but MWCNT-SnO2 NCs are rich in O-functional group. Microscopic studies revealed that both NCs have different morphological microstructure. Lens culinaris β-galactosidase (Lcβ-gal) was immobilized using glutaraldehyde cross-linker resulted in immobilization efficiency of 91.5% and 88% wit

The effects of collagen cross-linking on corneal density: a comparison between accelerated and conventional methods.

PURPOSE: To compare the corneal density before and after accelerated versus conventional corneal cross-linking (CXL). METHODS: Pentacam densitometry and corneal mapping were performed before and 6 months following the randomly assigned intervention. Corneal density was measured over different zones and layers of the cornea by two independent ophthalmologists. Total corneal density was calculated. The patients were followed up for the occurrence of procedure-related and unrelated complication 1 week, 1 month and a final visit around 6 months (180 ± 10 days) after the procedure, during which th

Antibacterial Polymeric Films Fabricated by [2+2] Cycloaddition-Retroelectrocyclization and Ag+ Ion Coordination.

The [2+2] cycloaddition-retroelectrocyclization (CA-RE) between N,N-dialkylaniline-substituted alkynes and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) is employed to fabricate functional cross-linked polymer films containing the intramolecular charge-transfer (CT) chromophores at the cross-linking points. Polystyrene bearing N,N-dialkylaniline-substituted alkynes (P1) and TCNQ polyester (P2) are mixed in tetrahydrofuran (THF), then this solution is spray-coated onto an indium tin oxide or glass plate. Heating to 100 °C initiates the [2+2] CA-RE reaction, resulting in the formation of cross-linked

Sustained release of parathyroid hormone via in situ cross-linking gelatin hydrogels improves the therapeutic potential of tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells for hypoparathyroidism.

Biomimetic parathyroid regeneration with sustained release of parathyroid hormone (PTH) into the blood stream is a considerable challenge in hypoparathyroidism treatment. We recently reported that tonsil-derived mesenchymal stem cells (TMSCs), if these cells were both differentiated in vitro before implantation and incorporated into a scaffold Matrigel, are a good cell source for parathyroid regeneration in a parathyroidectomized (PTX) animal model. Here, we present a new strategy for improved clinical application that enhances the sustained release of PTH by controlling mechanical stiffness u

Analysis of pseudoprogression after corneal cross-linking in children with progressive keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To analyse the long-term efficacy of corneal cross-linking (CXL) in children with keratoconus and to describe criteria for the detection of pseudoprogression. METHODS: Evaluation of retrospectively collected corneal topography (Placido system) and tomography (Scheimpflug system) results after CXL in children (age 18 or younger). Twenty-five patients (33 eyes) were included. Follow-up was assessed after 1, 2, 3 and 4 years. Progression was defined as an increase in maximal keratometry (Kmax) of at least one dioptre (D) in 1 year. RESULTS: For the entire group, mean Kmax prior to CXL

Adenovirus vector-based incorporation of a photo-cross-linkable amino acid into proteins in human primary cells and cancerous cell lines.

The site-specific incorporation of cross-linkable designer amino acids into proteins is useful for covalently bonding protein complexes upon exposure to light. This technology can be used to study networks of protein-protein interactions in living cells; however, to date it has only been applicable for use with a narrow range of cell types, due to the limited availability of plasmid-based transfection protocols. In the present study, we achieved adenovirus-based expression of a variant of an archaeal pyrrolysyl-tRNA synthetase and UAG-recognising tRNA pair, which was used to incorporate unnatu

PURPOSE: To compare the clinical effects and safety of transepithelial corneal cross-linking (CXL) to epithelium-off (epi-off) CXL in progressive keratoconus. DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial (noninferiority). METHODS: Patients received either transepithelial CXL with Ricrolin TE (n = 35) or epi-off CXL with isotonic riboflavin (n = 26) in 1 academic treatment center, using a simple unrestricted randomization procedure.
