Social and Structural Determinants of Cervical Health among Women Engaged in HIV Care.

Cervical cancer prevention/control efforts among women living with HIV/AIDS (WLH) are socially and structurally challenging. Healthcare access and perceived HIV stigma and discrimination are factors that may challenge risk reduction efforts. This study examined socio-structural determinants of cervical cancer screening among women engaged in HIV care. One hundred forty-five WLH seeking health/social services from AIDS Service Organizations in the southeastern US completed a questionnaire assessing factors related to cervical cancer prevention/control. Ninety percent were African American, mean

Dissociable roles for the basolateral amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in decision-making under risk of punishment.

Several neuropsychiatric disorders are associated with abnormal decision-making involving risk of punishment, but the neural basis of this association remains poorly understood. Altered activity in brain systems including the basolateral amygdala (BLA) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) can accompany these same disorders, and these structures are implicated in some forms of decision-making. The current study investigated the role of the BLA and OFC in decision-making under risk of explicit punishment. Rats were trained in the risky decision-making task (RDT), in which they chose between two levers

Effects of intranasal oxytocin on the neural basis of face processing in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with altered face processing and decreased activity in brain regions involved in face processing. The neuropeptide oxytocin has been shown to promote face processing and modulate brain activity in healthy adults. The present study examined the effects of oxytocin on the neural basis of face processing in adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). METHODS: A group of 14 individuals with AS and a group of 14 neurotypical control participants performed a face-matching and a house-matching task during functional magnetic resonance imaging. The eff

Measuring HIV- and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in Nicaragua: results from a community-based study.

Psychometric properties of external HIV-related stigma and discrimination scales and their predictors were investigated. A cross-sectional community-based study was carried out among 520 participants using an ongoing health and demographic surveillance system in León, Nicaragua. Participants completed an 18-item HIV stigma scale and 19 HIV and AIDS discrimination-related statements. A factor analysis found that 15 of the 18 items in the stigma scale and 18 of the 19 items in the discrimination scale loaded clearly into five- and four-factor structures, respectively. Overall Cronbach's alpha of

Receptive prosody in nonfluent primary progressive aphasias.

INTRODUCTION: Prosody has been little studied in the primary progressive aphasias (PPAs), a group of neurodegenerative disorders presenting with progressive language impairment. METHODS: Here we conducted a systematic investigation of different dimensions of prosody processing (acoustic, linguistic and emotional) in a cohort of 19 patients with nonfluent PPA syndromes (11 with progressive nonfluent aphasia, PNFA; five with progressive logopenic/phonological aphasia, LPA; three with progranulin-associated aphasia, GRN-PPA) compared with a group of healthy older controls. Visual hallucinations and altered visual information processing in Parkinson disease and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Visual hallucinations (VHs) are common in dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) and Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD), while auditory hallucinations are rare. To neurophysiologically investigate the pathophysiology of VHs in these disorders, we studied event-related potentials (ERPs) of DLB, PDD, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. We compared visual and auditory ERP latencies among PDD patients with and without VHs (PDD-H: 11, PDD-N: 6), DLB patients (24), and AD patients (21). To elicit visual and auditory ERPs, a facial discrimination paradigm and a conventional auditory odd-ball paradig

The significance of overvaluation of shape and weight in binge eating disorder.

As publication of DSM-V draws near, research is needed to validate the diagnostic scheme for binge eating disorder (BED). Shape and weight overvaluation has stimulated considerable debate in this regard, given associations with psychosocial impairment and poor treatment outcome in BED. This study sought to further explore the convergent validity and diagnostic specificity of shape and weight overvaluation in BED. A total of 160 women with BED, and 108 women with non-eating disordered psychiatric disorders were recruited from the community. Women with BED were classified as more or less severe

EEG correlates of moderate intermittent explosive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: We investigated electroencephalographic (EEG) correlates of moderate intermittent explosive disorder (mIED), which is characterized by uncontrollable, impulsive attacks that either manifest in aggressive outbursts of temper, or in implosive, auto-aggressive behaviour. METHODS: In two Experiments, EEG data were recorded during rest conditions, and while subjects were presented with auditory and visual stimuli. Additionally, scores of the I7 impulsivity scale (designed to capture acting on impulse) were obtained. RESULTS: In Experiment 1, individuals with mIED showed a stronger incr

Altered reward processing in women recovered from anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with anorexia nervosa are known to be ascetic and able to sustain self-denial of food as well as most comforts and pleasures in life. Building on previous findings of altered striatal dopamine binding in anorexia nervosa, the authors sought to assess the response of the anterior ventral striatum to reward and loss in this disorder. METHOD: Striatal responses to a simple monetary reward task were investigated using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging. To avoid the confounding effects of malnutrition, the authors compared 13 healthy comparison women and 13

The acute effect of alcohol on decision making in social drinkers.

RATIONALE: Many studies have reported the long-term adverse effects of alcohol on executive cognitive function in chronic alcohol abusers, yet little research has investigated the acute effects of alcohol in social drinkers. Studies on acute effects report alcohol-induced deficits on tasks that require executive cognitive processes, with alcohol acting to increase preservative errors and reduce planning. AIM: The present investigation examines the acute effects of a moderate dose of alcohol on a decision-making task that involves participants making a forced choice between two simultaneously

Subjective face recognition difficulties, aberrant sensibility, sleeping disturbances and aberrant eating habits in families with Asperger syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The present study was undertaken in order to determine whether a set of clinical features, which are not included in the DSM-IV or ICD-10 for Asperger Syndrome (AS), are associated with AS in particular or whether they are merely a familial trait that is not related to the diagnosis. METHODS: Ten large families, a total of 138 persons, of whom 58 individuals fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for AS and another 56 did not to fulfill these criteria, were studied using a structured interview focusing on the possible presence of face recognition difficulties, aberrant sensibility and

Behavioral alterations in rats prenatally exposed to valproic acid: animal model of autism.

Autism is a severe behavioral disorder characterized by pervasive impairments in social interactions, deficits in verbal and nonverbal communication, and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behaviors and interests. Recently, a new rodent model of autism was created by exposure of rat fetuses to valproic acid (VPA) on the 12.5th day of gestation (VPA rats). The model has striking anatomical, pathological, and etiological similarities to human data; however, it has not been characterized behaviorally. In order to determine if VPA rats present behavioral aberrations observed in autism, their beha

Measurement of symptom distress in women with early-stage breast cancer.

While symptom distress can alter the cancer experience, it is difficult to define and measure. This study's aims were (1) to determine whether the McCorkle Symptom Distress Scale (SDS) or the Rhodes Adapted Symptom Distress Scale (ASDS) was the more accurate measure of symptom distress in women with breast cancer; (2) correlate both scales with a visual analogue scale (VAS) measuring anxiety, a symptom frequently reported clinically; (3) determine tool preference; and (4) establish when during the first cycle of chemotherapy the highest levels of symptom distress were experienced. Examination of differences between successful and unsuccessful elderly hearing aid candidates matched for age, hearing loss and gender.

This study examined group differences on a variety of measures for three groups of elderly hearing aid candidates matched for gender, age and hearing loss. These three groups were: (1) 26 candidates who declined amplification (non-adherents); (2) 24 individuals who purchased hearing aids, but subsequently returned them (rejected HA); and (3) 26 who purchased hearing aids and continued to use their hearing aids for at least the first 6 months following delivery (accepted HA). Following demonstration of adequate reliability for these measures, using the non-adherents as the test retest study sam

Phosphodiesterase inhibitors potentiate opiate-antagonist discrimination by morphine-dependent rats.

This study was performed to examine the relevance of the quasi-withdrawal syndrome in nondependent rats to the syndrome precipitated by naltrexone in rats physically dependent upon morphine. Morphine-dependent rats trained to discriminate between SC injections of naltrexone (0.1 mg/kg) and saline were pretreated with 10 mg/kg of a phosphodiesterase inhibitor: 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX), Ro 20-1724, or papaverine. The naltrexone stimulus-generalization curve and dose-response curve for loss of body weight were shifted to the left by IBMX and Ro 20-1724, which produce quasi-withdrawal, b

Auditory detection and perception in normal man and in patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency: effect of adrenal cortical steroids.

Auditory detection thresholds for sinusoidal tones and various tests of auditory perception were determined in 12 patients with adrenal cortical insufficiency (seven with Addison's disease and five with panhypopituitarism) and compared to those in normal volunteers. In adrenal cortical insufficiency auditory detection sensitivity was significantly more acute than normal, and judgments of loudness and of the contralateral threshold shift were made at levels more than 20 db below those of normal subjects. Thus both the lower and the upper limits of the dynamic auditory range are significantly de

A LASSO-based nomogram for the risk assessment of cancer anorexia in postoperative gastric cancer patients.

INTRODUCTION & AIMS: Cancer anorexia (CA) is a prevalent and debilitating complication in postoperative patients with gastric cancer (GC). Standardized tools for the early prediction of CA risk in this specific population remain lacking. This study aimed to identify predictor domains retained in a TRIPOD-compliant multivariable model and to develop a nomogram for CA risk assessment in postoperative patients with GC. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional predictive modeling study of 440 postoperative patients with GC at a tertiary cancer center. Using a date-level temporal split by questionn

Serum FGL2 is correlated with the severity and psychological status of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fibrinogen-like protein 2 (FGL2) is involved in immune-mediated inflammatory responses. However, its role in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) remains to be elucidated. This study investigated serum FGL2 levels in patients with IBS-D and examined their association with inflammatory cytokines, disease severity, and psychological status. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, were excluded to avoid diagnostic overlaps. IBS-D diagnosis was based on the Rome III criteria. METHODS: A total of 117 patients wi
