Establishment of the best possible relationship between upper and lower teeth is very important when treating jaw fractures and orthognathic deformities in partially edentulous patients. Many surgeons use arch bars and acrylic splints for intermaxillary fixation (IMF) to obtain the best occlusal relationships after the operation. In patients with sufficient teeth, IMF is not so difficult to realize. However, in partially edentulous patients, the available teeth may not be sufficient to apply arch bars or splints. This paper describes a system for IMF of a partially edentulous jaw. Screws made

BACKGROUND: Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) in complex shoulder fractures is ever more frequently. This study compares clinical and radiologic results of patients with comminuted proximal humeral fractures (PHFs) treated with RSA, with and without tuberosities grafting.
METHODS: Between January 2009 and June 2014, 55 patients aged ≥65 years with 3- and 4-part PHFs were treated surgically. Patients' files and the hospital's digital database were reviewed retrospectively with at least 5-year of follow up. We constituted three groups according to the tuberosity consolidation: patients in who

BACKGROUND: A commercially available nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite paste Ostim has been reported in few recent studies to surpass other synthetic bone substitutes with respect to the observed clinical results. However, the integration of this implantable material has been histologically evaluated only in animal experimental models up to now. This study aimed to evaluate the tissue incorporation of Ostim in human cancellous bone after reconstructive bone surgery for trauma.
METHODS: Biopsy specimens from 6 adult patients with a total of 7 tibial, calcaneal or distal radial fractures were obta

BACKGROUND: Inferior pole patellar fractures present surgical challenges due to their comminuted nature. Tension band wiring (TBW) is a commonly used fixation technique. However, it is associated with complications such as hardware prominence and soft tissue irritation. Suture anchor (SA) fixation has been proposed as an alternative to TBW that aims to reduce hardware-related complications. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcomes of TBW and SA fixation for inferior pole patellar fractures.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Scopus

Treatment of osteoporotic distal femur fractures is often complicated by a high rate of nonunion and varus collapse. For such fractures, lateral plating with lateral incision and double plating with anterior paramedial incision have shown promising results in the recent literature. The hypothesis of this study was that bilateral plating of comminuted distal femur fractures in osteoporotic patients would result in higher union rates and lower revision rates compared to an isolated lateral locking plate. The study included 56 patients (23 males, 33 females) with supracondylar femur fracture. Acc

OBJECTIVES: Trauma evaluation of extremities can be challenging in conventional radiography. A multi-use x-ray system with cone-beam CT (CBCT) option facilitates ancillary 3-D imaging without repositioning. We assessed the clinical value of CBCT scans by analyzing the influence of additional findings on therapy.
METHODS: Ninety-two patients underwent radiography and subsequent CBCT imaging with the twin robotic scanner (76 wrist/hand/finger and 16 ankle/foot/toe trauma scans). Reports by on-call radiologists before and after CBCT were compared regarding fracture detection, joint affliction, c

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: The majority of distal clavicle fractures are displaced fractures and constitute a treatment challenge because they have a 30% chance of delayed union or nonunion. Although several options for surgical reconstruction have been described, in patients with a comminuted and/or small distal fragment, these reconstructive options have proved to be prone to failure. Moreover, secondary surgery for removal is necessary in most cases. We hypothesized that the LockDown device, a braided synthetic ligament device, combined with resection of the distal fracture fragment is a su

We present the clinical and radiographic results of a prospective study with the Orthofix tibial nailing system. The ease and safety of distal locking with the use of an improved targeting system was also evaluated. Sixty fresh tibial fractures in 60 patients with a mean age of 37.3 years (range 17-73 years) were treated. Eighteen of the fractures were grade I open fractures. All operations were performed in a conventional operating theatre on a simple transparent operating table, with reduction of the fracture performed under manual traction and manipulation of the fracture site. Hand reaming

PURPOSE: Tibial plateau fractures are severe intra-articular injuries; their treatment is accompanied by numerous complications and requires extensive surgical experience. In this manuscript, we compared our experiences with data from the literature.
METHODS: Retrospectively, we analyzed 41 patients with closed lateral tibial plateau fracture (Schatzker's I-III). All fractures were treated surgically with open reduction and internal plate fixation. Post-operative complications and final outcomes were monitored according to the Tegner Lysholm Knee Scoring System. The average follow-up was 5.7

Background and purpose - Previous reports on elbow injuries with concomitant comminute radial head fracture are difficult to interpret, since they include an array of different soft-tissue and bony injuries around the elbow. We focused on Mason-IV fracture dislocations of the elbow and retrospectively reviewed 2 treatment options: radial head resection or replacement with a radial head arthroplasty, both in combination with lateral ligament repair. Patients and methods - In Linköping, 18 consecutive patients with Mason-IV fracture dislocation and with a median age of 56 (19-79) years were trea

BACKGROUND: Proposed benefits of intramedullary techniques include limited soft tissue dissection while affording sufficient stability to allow early wrist motion. The primary null hypothesis of this randomized trial was that there is no significant difference with respect to functional outcome, pain and disability between patients treated with either 2.4-mm volar locking plate fixation or intramedullary nail fixation of intra-articular fractures of the distal radius.
METHODS: We conducted a single-centre, prospective randomized matched-pairs trial. Patients with intraarticular distal radius

OBJECTIVES: Stable fixation of displaced type II distal clavicle fractures presents a challenge to the surgeon because of distal fragment comminution and the large deforming forces created by the weight of the arm. We hypothesized that suture fixation around the coracoid and interfragmentary suture fixation would adequately counteract these forces and lead to a high rate of union and restoration of function.
DESIGN: This is a retrospective study of 20 sequential patients treated between 1997 and 2009.
SETTING: In-patient operating room followed by the clinic.
PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: All pati
