Use of insecticides to control screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in cattle.

Some insecticides to control and prevent screw-worm fly strike by Chrysomya bezziana in calves and adult cattle were tested in field trials on cattle in Sabah, East Malaysia. Ivermectin injected subcutaneously in newborn calves at 200 mu/kg provided 10 days protection from screw-worm fly strike, which allowed navels to dry. Ivermectin, 1% dichlofenthion plus gentian violet and 3% lindane plus pine oil smear were all effective in preventing re-strike of treated wounds in adult cattle. A single subcutaneous injection of ivermectin at 200 mu/kg was effective, whereas it was necessary to re-apply

Epidemic Venezuelan equine encephalitis in North America in 1971: vector studies.

A major epidemic of Venezuelan equine encephalitis occurred in south Texas in the summer of 1971. More than 1500 equines died of VEE in Texas, and 110 human cases with no deaths were reported. Vector studies in south Texas and northern Tamaulipas revealed that the overall mosquito infection rates during the peak of the epidemic were about 1:100, one of the highest rates observed for a major epidemic. Mosquito infection rates of this magnitude could easily explain the intensity of VEE outbreaks in both equines and man. A total of 943 VEE virus isolations were made from mosquitoes. Eight of the

The simulium control scheme at Abuja, Northern Nigeria, and its effect on the prevalence of onchocerciasis in the area.

This account of the conduct of the Similium Control Scheme at Abuja, Northern Nigeria, over the period 1956-66 shows that, by larvicide treatment of some 160 km of rivers with DDT in the early wet season, the Simulium damnosum density has been reduced by about 90% of its precontrol level each year over an area of more than 3000 km(2).A skin-snip survey, in which 6748 persons were examined (of whom 5700 lived within the controlled area and 1048 in a comparison area) during 1966, indicates that there has been no obvious decrease in prevalence of onchocerciasis, particularly among children born s

Deep learning classification and motion-based analysis of Aedes aegypti Red-eye GSS larvae for SIT applications.

Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviral diseases, including dengue, Zika, and chikungunya, posing significant global public health challenges. Effective control strategies, such as the sterile insect technique (SIT), require an accurate and reliable sex sorting system to ensure male only releases. Here, we present a compact deep learning framework for image-based classification of sex-linked eye-color phenotypes (black-eye males and red-eye females) and instar stages of Aedes aegypti larvae, complemented by an independent optical flow analysis of larval motor activity. Video recordings of

Evaluation of Stemona collinsiae root extracts for topical cockroach control: adulticidal, nymphicidal, and chemical distribution analysis.

Stemona collinsiae root extracts have been scientifically shown to exhibit antifeedant, growth inhibitory, larvicidal, pupacidal, and adulticidal activities in pests and insect vectors. In this research, contact toxicity of hexane, dichloromethane, ethanol, and water extracts was repeatedly tested on final-instar nymphs and adult Periplaneta americana using a topical application method and the penetration and distribution of didehydrostemofoline were detected at each of the specified times using MALDI-IMS and HPLC. Dichloromethane extract, which contained the highest didehydrostemofoline conte

Discovery of Knock-Down Resistance in the Major African Malaria Vector Anopheles funestus.

A major insecticide resistance mechanism in insect pests is knock-down resistance (kdr) caused by mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (Vgsc) gene. Despite being common in most malaria Anopheles vector species, kdr mutations have never been observed in Anopheles funestus, the principal malaria vector in Eastern and Southern Africa, with resistance mainly being conferred by detoxification enzymes. In a parallel study, we monitored 10 populations of An. funestus in Tanzania for insecticide resistance unexpectedly identified resistance to a banned insecticide, DDT, in the Morogoro region

Design of a modular controlled unit for the study of bioprocesses: Towards solutions for Bioregenerative Life Support Systems in space.

Space exploration beyond the Low Earth Orbit requires the establishment of Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSSs), which, through bioprocesses for primary resource recycling, ensure crew survival. However, the introduction of new organisms in confined space habitats must be carefully evaluated in advance to avoid unforeseen events that could compromise the mission. In this work, we have designed and built an experimental chamber, named Growing/Rearing Module (GRM), completely isolated and equipped with micro-environmental monitoring and control systems. This unit is specially intended fo

Phytochemical Composition and Bioassay on Iranian Teucrium Polium Extracts against Anopheles Stephensi (Diptera: Culicidae).

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi is an important malaria vector mosquito in Iran and other western Asian countries. In many human communities, plant products have been used traditionally instead of synthetic pesticides for mosquito control due to their minimal hazardous effects. Teucrium polium, known popularly as felty germander, has been introduced in Persian Medicine (PM) as an insect repellent from a long time ago. METHODS: The present study was undertaken to evaluate repellent and larvicidal activity of dichloromethane (DCMETP) and ethanolic extracts (EE-TP) of T. polium against An. steph

Non-specific effects of BCG in protozoal infections: tegumentary leishmaniasis and malaria.

BACKGROUND: Leishmaniasis and malaria are major causes of illness in the poorest countries. In the absence of efficient strategies to prevent infections and to control the transmission of the parasites by insect vectors, treatment relies on drug therapy. Vaccine development continues on several fronts; however none of the candidates developed has so far been shown to provide long-lasting protection at a population level. Because the bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine can induce heterologous protective effects, we hypothesize that BCG has beneficial effects in the control of tegumentary lei

Legal aspects of public health: difficulties in controlling vector-borne and zoonotic diseases in Brazil.

In recent years, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases have become a major challenge for public health. Dengue fever and leptospirosis are the most important communicable diseases in Brazil based on their prevalence and the healthy life years lost from disability. The primary strategy for preventing human exposure to these diseases is effective insect and rodent control in and around the home. However, health authorities have difficulties in controlling vector-borne and zoonotic diseases because residents often refuse access to their homes. This study discusses aspects related to the activities p

Factors influencing the selection of Rhipicephalus microplus resistance to acaricides.

Rhipicephalus microplus is a hematophagous ecto-parasite of cattle that has a cosmopolitan distribution in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. This tick species causes economic losses by consuming blood and reducing meat and milk production, as well as facilitating the transmission of pathogens. Different classes of acaricides, including organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids, insect growth regulators, formamidines, phenylpyrazoles, and macrocyclic lactones, are currently used sequentially or simultaneously to control R. microplus infestations. The frequent use of these acaricides

Threshold-dependent improvement in sex separation efficiency by NaCl pretreatment of larval-pupal mixtures in mass-reared Aedes albopictus.

BACKGROUND: The removal of female mosquitoes is a critical requirement in sterile insect technique (SIT) for mosquito control. Improving the efficiency and accuracy of sex sorting is therefore vital. Previous studies have demonstrated that treating larval-pupal mixtures with a 15% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution prior to the sex sorting process reduces female contamination in Aedes mosquitoes. However, the effects of NaCl on Aedes albopictus mosquito biology and its practical application in production facilities remain insufficiently explored and warrant further investigation. RESULTS: Exposu

Trypanosoma Cruzi G and Y Strains' Metacyclic Trypomastigote Sheds Extracellular Vesicles and Trigger Host-Cell Communication.

Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan parasite, spontaneously releases extracellular vesicles (EVs) that facilitate communication with both invertebrate and vertebrate hosts. The results obtained by several groups indicated compositional variations in EVs generated by distinct types of T. cruzi. Nonetheless, few studies have characterized EVs derived from metacyclic trypomastigotes (MT), the form that develops in the vector and infects vertebrate hosts. This study aimed to characterize and compare EVs extracted from MTs of two T. cruzi parasite strains belonging to distinct groups with varying infect

Impact of multi-generational laboratory rearing on the development and viability of Cochliomyia hominivorax.

The screwworm fly, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a significant pest in Brazil, posing threats to agriculture and public health. Laboratory rearing is crucial for developing control strategies like the sterile insect technique (SIT); but the effects of multi-generational rearing on the fly's biological parameters are not fully understood. This study investigated the impact of rearing C. hominivorax for 12 inbred generations on its morphometrics, reproductive capacity, and life expectancy. Specimens were collected at distinct developmental stages across 12 generations for morphometric analysis, an
