Use of neural networks to predict a potential osteoporotic metabolic condition based on the panoramic mandibular index.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the use of neural networks to predict potential osteoporotic metabolic conditions using the Panoramic Mandibular Index (PMI) derived from panoramic radiographs. STUDY DESIGN: A total of n = 750 radiographs were collected and 1,500 regions of interest (ROIs) were analysed. Convolutional neural network (CNN), specifically ResNet-50, were used with transfer learning, achieving the highest accuracy. Three classification approaches were tested: binary classification (PMI > 0.25 vs. PMI < 0.25), 3-class classification (PMI > 0.25, 0.2-0.25, PMI < 0.2), and a modif

Supervised Machine Learning and Physics Machine Learning approach for prediction of peak temperature distribution in Additive Friction Stir Deposition of Aluminium Alloy.

Additive friction stir deposition (AFSD) is a novel solid-state additive manufacturing technique that circumvents issues of porosity, cracking, and properties anisotropy that plague traditional powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition approaches. However, correlations between process parameters, thermal profiles, and resulting microstructure in AFSD still need to be better understood. This hinders process optimization for properties. This work employs a framework combining supervised machine learning (SML) and physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to predict peak temperature distrib

A generative adversarial network for multiple reads reconstruction in DNA storage.

DNA storage is widely considered as a promising solution to the data explosion problem. However, the synthesis, PCR and sequencing processes usually result in erroneous reads involving base insertions, deletions, and substitutions. Specially this situation is even more serious in the 3rd generation of sequencing technologies. Different from previous error-correction and multiple sequence alignment methods, we first transform the multiple reads into a noisy mage, and then construct a conditional generative adversarial network to produce a "smooth" image which refers to the consensus sequence. R

Lightweight neural network for Alzheimer's disease classification using multi-slice sMRI.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing the progression of AD. To achieve efficient and scalable AD auto-detection based on structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (sMRI), a lightweight neural network using multi-slice sMRI is proposed in this paper. The backbone for feature extraction is based on ShuffleNet V1 architecture, which is effective for overcoming the limitations posed by limited sMRI data and resource-restricted devices. In addition, we incorporate Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) to capture cros

Brain Network Classification for Accurate Detection of Alzheimer's Disease via Manifold Harmonic Discriminant Analysis.

Mounting evidence shows that Alzheimer's disease (AD) manifests the dysfunction of the brain network much earlier before the onset of clinical symptoms, making its early diagnosis possible. Current brain network analyses treat high-dimensional network data as a regular matrix or vector, which destroys the essential network topology, thereby seriously affecting diagnosis accuracy. In this context, harmonic waves provide a solid theoretical background for exploring brain network topology. However, the harmonic waves are originally intended to discover neurological disease propagation patterns in

Bengali-Sign: A Machine Learning-Based Bengali Sign Language Interpretation for Deaf and Non-Verbal People.

Sign language is undoubtedly a common way of communication among deaf and non-verbal people. But it is not common among hearing people to use sign language to express feelings or share information in everyday life. Therefore, a significant communication gap exists between deaf and hearing individuals, despite both groups experiencing similar emotions and sentiments. In this paper, we developed a convolutional neural network-squeeze excitation network to predict the sign language signs and developed a smartphone application to provide access to the ML model to use it. The SE block provides atte

Computationally Efficient Demographic History Inference from Allele Frequencies with Supervised Machine Learning.

Inferring past demographic history of natural populations from genomic data is of central concern in many studies across research fields. Previously, our group had developed dadi, a widely used demographic history inference method based on the allele frequency spectrum (AFS) and maximum composite-likelihood optimization. However, dadi's optimization procedure can be computationally expensive. Here, we present donni (demography optimization via neural network inference), a new inference method based on dadi that is more efficient while maintaining comparable inference accuracy. For each dadi-su

Deep insights into MCI diagnosis: A comparative deep learning analysis of EEG time series.

BACKGROUND: Individuals in the early stages of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) are typically diagnosed with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). MCI represents a transitional phase between normal cognitive function and AD. Electroencephalography (EEG) records carry valuable insights into cerebral cortex brain activities to analyze neuronal degeneration. To enhance the precision of dementia diagnosis, automatic and intelligent methods are required for the analysis and processing of EEG signals. NEW METHODS: This paper aims to address the challenges associated with MCI diagnosis by leveraging EEG signals

On Entity Embeddings for Ordinal Features as Representation Learning in Recurrence Prediction of Urothelial Bladder Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Urothelial Bladder Cancer (UBC) is a common cancer with a high risk of recurrence, which is influenced by the TNM classification, grading, age, and other factors. Recent studies demonstrate reliable and accurate recurrence prediction using Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and even outperform traditional approaches. However, most ML algorithms cannot process categorical input features, which must first be encoded into numerical values. Choosing the appropriate encoding strategy has a significant impact on the prediction quality. OBJECTIVE: We investigate the impact of encoding stra

ERABiLNet: enhanced residual attention with bidirectional long short-term memory.

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) causes slow death in brain cells due to shrinkage of brain cells which is more prevalent in older people. In most cases, the symptoms of AD are mistaken as age-related stresses. The most widely utilized method to detect AD is Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Along with Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, the efficacy of identifying diseases related to the brain has become easier. But, the identical phenotype makes it challenging to identify the disease from the neuro-images. Hence, a deep learning method to detect AD at the beginning stage is suggested in this wo

TC-Sniffer: A Transformer-CNN Bibranch Framework Leveraging Auxiliary VOCs for Few-Shot UBC Diagnosis via Electronic Noses.

Utilizing electronic noses (e-noses) with pattern recognition algorithms offers a promising noninvasive method for the early detection of urinary bladder cancer (UBC). However, limited clinical samples often hinder existing artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnosis. This paper proposes TC-Sniffer, a novel bibranch framework for few-shot UBC diagnosis, leveraging easily obtainable UBC-related volatile organic components (VOCs) as auxiliary classification categories. These VOCs are biomarkers of UBC, helping the model learn more UBC-specific features, reducing overfitting in small sample s

Based on neural network cascade abnormal texture information dissemination of classification of patients with schizophrenia and depression.

This study used MRI brain image segmentation to identify novel magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) biomarkers to distinguish patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), major depressive disorder (MD), and healthy control (HC). Brain texture measurements, including entropy and contrast, were calculated to capture variability in adjacent MRI voxel intensity. These measures are then applied to group classification in deep learning techniques and combined with hierarchical correlations to locate results. Texture feature maps were extracted from segmented brain MRI scans of 141 patients with schizophrenia (SCZ
