Clinicopathological correlations of visual depth perception in patients with cerebrovascular disease.

Visual depth perception in 100 patients with cerebrovascular disease was evaluated using the Titumus stereotest. Twelve patients showed depth perception impairment. CT scans revealed that the lesion was located on the right hemisphere in 6 patients and on the left hemisphere in 3 patients, and that the remaining 3 patients had multiple infarctions. 123I SPECT was performed in 7 patients with moderate to severe depth perception impairment, of whom 6 patients showed a reduced blood flow in the posterior half of both the right and left cerebral hemispheres. Moderate to severe impairment of depth

Early acquisition efficiency in visual-to-auditory sensory substitution: the role of structured learning.

INTRODUCTION: Visual-to-auditory sensory substitution converts visual information into structured sound patterns when visual input is unavailable, impaired, or experimentally restricted, thereby supporting access to information otherwise conveyed visually. Its perceptual usability depends jointly on the sensory-conversion scheme that encodes visual information into sound and on the learning conditions under which learners acquire sound-visual mappings through learning and experience. Although prior visual-to-auditory sensory-substitution studies have often evaluated substituted coding schemes

Attentional bias modification is associated with fMRI response toward negative stimuli in individuals with residual depression: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Attentional bias modification (ABM) may lead to more adaptive emotion perception and emotion regulation. Understanding the neural basis of these effects may lead to greater precision for the development of future treatments. Task-related functional MRI (fMRI) after ABM training has not been investigated in depression so far. The main aim of this randomized controlled trial was to explore differences in brain activity after ABM training, in response to emotional stimuli. METHODS: A total of 134 people with previous depression, who had been treated for depression and had various deg

Phonological encoding in speech-sound disorder: evidence from a cross-modal priming experiment.

BACKGROUND: Psycholinguistic models of language production provide a framework for determining the locus of language breakdown that leads to speech-sound disorder (SSD) in children. AIMS: To examine whether children with SSD differ from their age-matched peers with typical speech and language development (TD) in the ability phonologically to encode lexical items that have been accessed from memory. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Thirty-six children (18 with TD, 18 with SSD) viewed pictures while listening to interfering words (IW) or a non-linguistic auditory stimulus presented over headphones either

Have we met before? Neural correlates of emotional learning in women with social phobia.

BACKGROUND: Altered memory processes are thought to be a key mechanism in the etiology of anxiety disorders, but little is known about the neural correlates of fear learning and memory biases in patients with social phobia. The present study therefore examined whether patients with social phobia exhibit different patterns of neural activation when confronted with recently acquired emotional stimuli. METHODS: Patients with social phobia and a group of healthy controls learned to associate pseudonames with pictures of persons displaying either a fearful or a neutral expression. The next day, pa

Probabilistic reward learning in adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder--an electrophysiological study.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is hypothesized to be characterized by altered reinforcement sensitivity. The main aim of the present study was to assess alterations in the electrophysiological correlates of monetary reward processing in adult patients with ADHD of the combined subtype. Fourteen adults with ADHD of the combined subtype and 14 healthy control participants performed an active and an observational probabilistic reward-based learning task while an electroencephalogramm (EEG) was recorded. Regardless of feedback valence, there was a general feedback-related negativi

Attention bias of anxious youth during extended exposure of emotional face pairs: an eye-tracking study.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrate that anxiety is characterized by biased attention toward threats, typically measured by differences in motor reaction time to threat and neutral cues. Using eye-tracking methodology, the current study measured attention biases in anxious and nonanxious youth, using unrestricted free viewing of angry, happy, and neutral faces. METHODS: Eighteen anxious and 15 nonanxious youth (8-17 years old) passively viewed angry-neutral and happy-neutral face pairs for 10 s while their eye movements were recorded. RESULTS: Anxious youth displayed a greater attention

Altered brain mechanisms of emotion processing in pre-manifest Huntington's disease.

Huntington's disease is an inherited neurodegenerative disease that causes motor, cognitive and psychiatric impairment, including an early decline in ability to recognize emotional states in others. The pathophysiology underlying the earliest manifestations of the disease is not fully understood; the objective of our study was to clarify this. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate changes in brain mechanisms of emotion recognition in pre-manifest carriers of the abnormal Huntington's disease gene (subjects with pre-manifest Huntington's disease): 16 subjects with pre-man

The superiority in voice processing of the blind arises from neural plasticity at sensory processing stages.

Blind people rely much more on voices compared to sighted individuals when identifying other people. Previous research has suggested a faster processing of auditory input in blind individuals than sighted controls and an enhanced activation of temporal cortical regions during voice processing. The present study used event-related potentials (ERPs) to single out the sub-processes of auditory person identification that change and allow for superior voice processing after congenital blindness. A priming paradigm was employed in which two successive voices (S1 and S2) of either the same (50% of th

Event-related repetitive TMS reveals distinct, critical roles for right OFA and bilateral posterior STS in judging the sex and trustworthiness of faces.

Judging the sex of faces relies on cues related to facial morphology and spatial relations between features, whereas judging the trustworthiness of faces relies on both structural and expressive cues that signal affective valence. The right occipital face area (OFA) processes structural cues and has been associated with sex judgments, whereas the posterior STS processes changeable facial cues related to muscle movements and is activated when observers judge trustworthiness. It is commonly supposed that the STS receives inputs from the OFA, yet it is unknown whether these regions have functiona

Visual awareness of objects and their colour.

At any given moment, our awareness of what we 'see' before us seems to be rather limited. If, for instance, a display containing multiple objects is shown (red or green disks), when one object is suddenly covered at random, observers are often little better than chance in reporting about its colour (Wolfe, Reinecke, & Brawn, Visual Cognition, 14, 749-780, 2006). We tested whether, when object attributes (such as colour) are unknown, observers still retain any knowledge of the presence of that object at a display location. Experiments 1-3 involved a task requiring two-alternative (yes/no) respo

Event-related potentials to overlapping shapes: effects of saliency and interference.

Visual perception is often challenged by various difficulties that act concomitantly and whose respective impacts may therefore be hard to distinguish. We used event-related potentials to dissociate the impact of target saliency, generated by occlusion, from that of interference produced by incongruent nontargets. In one block, the target (a square) partially occluded another square tilted by 45 degrees. This nontarget square interfered only to a small extent with target perception. In another block, the target was the occluded stimulus, and interference from the nontarget was substantial. Blo

Abnormally reduced dorsomedial prefrontal cortical activity and effective connectivity with amygdala in response to negative emotional faces in postpartum depression.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum major depression is a significant public health problem that strikes 15% of new mothers and confers adverse consequences for mothers, children, and families. The neural mechanisms involved in postpartum depression remain unknown, but brain processing of affective stimuli appears to be involved in other affective disorders. The authors examined activity in response to negative emotional faces in the dorsomedial pre-frontal cortex and amygdala, key emotion regulatory neural regions of importance to both mothering and depression. METHOD: Postpartum healthy mothers (N=16) an

Effects of preoccupation on interpersonal recall: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this pilot study was to examine whether priming preoccupation (rumination) in healthy participants adversely affects the processing of interpersonal information. METHODS: Sixty female undergraduates with moderate or marked preoccupation proneness (selected on the basis of their high preoccupation on eating, shape, and weight issues) were randomized to receive either a general preoccupation prime, a standardized preoccupation prime, or a control prime. Following the prime, participants watched an 8-min videotape of a family interaction and then were asked free recall que

Prefrontal cortex dysfunction during cognitive tests evidenced by functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Prefrontal cortex oxygenation changes in response to a verbal fluency task and a visual spatial working memory task were investigated by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) on nine patients with schizophrenia. Four patients were reactive to both tests; five reactive to only one of the two tests, suggesting the importance of reporting fNIRS results for each individual.

Psychopathy and functional magnetic resonance imaging blood oxygenation level-dependent responses to emotional faces in violent patients with schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Comorbidity between schizophrenia and psychopathy has been noted in violent patients in forensic settings. Both disorders are characterized by deficits in processing sad and fearful emotions, but there have been no imaging studies examining the impact of comorbid psychopathic traits on emotional information processing in violent patients with schizophrenia. We tested the hypothesis that violent patients with schizophrenia who had high psychopathy scores would show attenuated amygdala responses to emotional (particularly fearful) faces compared with those with low psychopathy scores

Involuntary interpretation of social cues is compromised in autism spectrum disorders.

A new social distance judgment task was used to measure quantitatively the extent to which social cues are immediately and involuntary interpreted by typically developing (TD) individuals and by individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The task thus tapped into the ability to involuntary "pick up" the meaning of social cues. The cues tested were social attention and implied biological motion. Task performance of the ASD and TD groups was similarly affected by a perceptual low-level illusion induced by physical characteristics of the stimuli. In contrast, a high-level illusion induced

Emotion regulation in spider phobia: role of the medial prefrontal cortex.

Phobic responses are strong emotional reactions towards phobic objects, which can be described as a deficit in the automatic regulation of emotions. Difficulties in the voluntary cognitive control of these emotions suggest a further phobia-specific deficit in effortful emotion regulation mechanisms. The actual study is based on this emotion regulation conceptualization of specific phobias. The aim is to investigate the neural correlates of these two emotion regulation deficits in spider phobics. Sixteen spider phobic females participated in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study

Error processing in normal aging and in basal ganglia disorders.

Recently it has been shown that effects of aging and pathologically induced changes of basal ganglia structures may have quite similar effects on cognitive functions mediated by the medial prefrontal cortex. The question appears, if this pattern may be assignable to other cognitive functions that are mediated via the basal ganglia and medial prefrontal brain areas. Error processing is a component of executive functions that also depends on these areas and especially on the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). Hence we ask, if error processing functions are differentially modulated by normal aging
