A randomized trial of brief interventions for problem and pathological gamblers.

Limited research exists regarding methods for reducing problem gambling. Problem gamblers (N = 180) were randomly assigned to assessment only control, 10 min of brief advice, 1 session of motivational enhancement therapy (MET), or 1 session of MET plus 3 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy. Gambling was assessed at baseline, at 6 weeks, and at a 9-month follow-up. Relative to assessment only, brief advice was the only condition that significantly decreased gambling between baseline and Week 6, and it was associated with clinically significant reductions in gambling at Month 9. Between Wee

Memory for angry faces, impulsivity, and problematic behavior in adolescence.

Research has shown that cognitive processes like the attribution of hostile intention or angry emotion to others contribute to the development and maintenance of conduct problems. However, the role of memory has been understudied in comparison with attribution biases. The aim of this study was thus to test if a memory bias for angry faces was related to conduct problems in youth. Adolescents from a junior secondary school were presented with angry and happy faces and were later asked to recognize the same faces with a neutral expression. They also completed an impulsivity questionnaire. A teac

Reduced cognitive ability in alcohol dependence: examining the role of covarying externalizing psychopathology.

Reduced executive cognitive ability is associated with alcohol dependence (AD) and other comorbid externalizing disorders. Working memory capacity, short-term memory, conditional associative learning, and intelligence were assessed in a sample (N = 477) with variation in lifetime histories of externalizing problems (conduct disorder, adult antisocial behavior, substance problems); this included a subsample (n = 285) with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.; American Psychiatric Association, 1994) diagnosis of AD. Individuals with both AD and a history of childhood

Like Father, like Child: Early Life Family Adversity and Children's Bullying Behaviors in Elementary School.

Family adversity has been associated with children's bullying behaviors. The evidence is, however, dominated by mothers' perceptions of the family environment and a focus on mothers' behaviors. This prospective population-based study examined whether children's bullying behaviors were associated with mother- and father-reported family adversity, assessed before and after child birth. Peer-nominations were used to assess bullying behaviors of 1298 children in elementary school (mean age 7.5 years). The following paternal risk factors were prospectively associated with children's bullying behavi

Case Report: Off-Label Use of Omalizumab in a 6-Year-Old Boy With ASD Ameliorated Severe Allergic Rhinitis and Subsequently Improved Behavioral Symptoms.

Children with ASD have elevated risk for developing allergic symptoms. The severity of allergic symptoms can exacerbate behavioral problems in children with ASD. Omalizumab, an anti-IgE antibody, has previously shown efficacy in treating allergic rhinitis and behavioral problems in a 12-year-old child with ASD. The present case report provides robust characterization of behavioral improvement in a 6-year-old child with ASD, allergic rhinitis, and autoimmune disorder. A 6-year-old boy with ASD and Hashimoto's disease presented to the clinic with severe allergic rhinitis, irritability, and langu

Analog baselines: a critical review of the methodology.

Analog baselines are an experimental methodology for identifying the functions of maladaptive behavior in the naturally occurring environment (Iwata, Dorsey, Slifer, Bauman, & Richman, 1982; Iwata et al., 1994). This article identifies a number of potential limitations in this methodology. These include: (a) procedural problems inherent in the use of multielement designs, (b) the fidelity of analog baseline design conditions, (c) the relation of the analog conditions to the naturally occurring environment, (d) a narrow analysis of behavior limited by an implicit adherence to an ABC model of be

Innovative problem-solving in a threatened gull species, the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus).

Innovation, a process that plays an important role in the ecology and evolution of species, is considered an expression of behavioral flexibility in animals. Here we analyzed innovative problem-solving ability and performance enhancement through learning in the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus), under controlled processes and experimental conditions. Trials were undertaken with nine adult individuals captured at a highly urbanized coastal area of Argentina. Each individual was presented with a Plexiglas box that could be opened by pushing or pulling two lids, each lid leading to a separated food

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Conduct Problems: The Role of Self-Control Demands.

We tested within- and between-person effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms on conduct problems and alcohol intoxication via self-control demands using multilevel structural equation modeling in a longitudinal burst-design study of 251 U.S. veterans who participated in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We theorized that experiencing PTSD symptoms engenders efforts to regulate mood, control thoughts, and inhibit or control behavior that is taxing to the individual (i.e., it places demands on self-control) and hypothesized that this process results in subsequent deficits

Gambling-related attitudes and behaviors in adolescents having received instant (scratch) lottery tickets as gifts.

OBJECTIVE: Instant (scratch) lottery ticket gambling is popular among adolescents. Prior research has not determined whether adolescents' gambling behavior and attitudes toward gambling are influenced by the receipt of scratch lottery tickets as gifts. METHOD: Cross-sectional survey data from 2,002 Connecticut high school students with past-year gambling were analyzed using bivariate approaches and logistic regression analyses. Interactions between gambling-problem severity and lottery-gift status were examined in relation to multiple outcomes. RESULTS: Adolescents who received a scratch lot

Associations of neighborhood deprivation and household income during pregnancy on child externalizing and internalizing problems.

Socioeconomic disadvantage has been established as a key risk factor for adverse child behavioral outcomes. Understanding how individual components of socioeconomic status (SES) interact with each other can elucidate protective factors and inform interventions and policies to promote positive developmental outcomes. This study examined the interactive effects of prenatal household income and neighborhood deprivation on child externalizing and internalizing problems (N = 793; Mage = 8.37 years; 51.2% females; 81.5% White). Results revealed an interaction effect between prenatal household income

Attachment Problems and Mentalizing Capacity Relate to Parent-Child Informant Discrepancies in Female Adolescents with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Parent-child informant discrepancies on psychopathology provide important knowledge on the parent-child relationship and the child's mental health, but mechanisms underlying parent-child informant discrepancies are largely unknown. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between attachment problems and mentalizing capacity and parent-child informant discrepancies on borderline personality disorder (BPD) severity, internalizing, and externalizing pathology in a clinical sample of 91 adolescent girls with BPD and their parents. Results showed that more attachment problems to parents and peer

A Cumulative Substance Use Score as a Novel Measure to Predict Risk of Criminal Recidivism in Forensic Juvenile Male Outpatients.

This longitudinal study aimed to evaluate a newly developed cumulative measure for substance use problems as predictor of criminal recidivism in youth. Questionnaires-based substance-related behaviors (tobacco, alcohol, cannabis and further drugs), and interview-based psychiatric disorders were assessed in a sample of 142 male adolescent forensic outpatients in Zurich, Switzerland (mean age 16.8 years, SD = 1.4 years). Cox regressions were used to test whether substance use behaviors/disorders were predictors of officially recorded criminal offenses 365 days after the initial assessment. The c

Maternal stress and behavioral adaptation in methadone- or buprenorphine-exposed toddlers.

The current study examined the relationship between early interaction, parenting stress, maternal psychological distress symptoms, and behavior problems and health-related quality of life among children born to mothers in opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) in Norway during the period 2005-2007 (N = 36). This group was compared with a normative sample of mothers without substance abuse problems and their children (N = 36). There were significant group differences (p < .01) in perceived child problems in toddlerhood. In a regression model, mothers' self-reported psychological distress symptoms i

Psychosocial variables associated with adolescent gambling.

The authors empirically examined the relations between several psychosocial variables associated with adolescent problem gambling. Participants were 2,336 students in Grades 7-13, and all completed a questionnaire regarding gambling activities, gambling severity, perceived social support, drug and alcohol dependence, and various social, emotional, and behavioral problems. With respect to gambling severity, 4.9% of adolescents met the criteria for pathological gambling, and 8.0% were found to be at risk. Psychosocial difficulties associated with problem gambling include poor perceived familial
