Racial/ethnic variation in trauma-related psychopathology in the United States: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of mental disorders among Black, Latino, and Asian adults is lower than among Whites. Factors that explain these differences are largely unknown. We examined whether racial/ethnic differences in exposure to traumatic events (TEs) or vulnerability to trauma-related psychopathology explained the lower rates of psychopathology among racial/ethnic minorities. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of TE exposure and associations with onset of DSM-IV depression, anxiety and substance disorders and with lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Collaborative Psy

Associations between thyroid dysfunction and developmental status in children with excessive iodine status.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Adequate iodine status and normal thyroid hormone synthesis are important for optimal child development. In this study, we explored whether young children's developmental status is associated with thyroid dysfunction in an area of chronic excessive iodine exposure. METHODS: We included 298 children between 18 and 48 months of age residing in Algerian refugee camps. Early child development was measured using the Ages and Stages Questionnaires, third edition (ASQ-3), consisting of five domains: Communication, Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Problem Solving and Personal-Social

Access 3 project protocol: young people and health system navigation in the digital age: a multifaceted, mixed methods study.

BACKGROUND: The integration of digital technology into everyday lives of young people has become widespread. It is not known whether and how technology influences barriers and facilitators to healthcare, and whether and how young people navigate between face-to-face and virtual healthcare. To provide new knowledge essential to policy and practice, we designed a study that would explore health system access and navigation in the digital age. The study objectives are to: (1) describe experiences of young people accessing and navigating the health system in New South Wales (NSW), Australia; (2) i

Spectrum of illness in international migrants seen at GeoSentinel clinics in 1997-2009, part 2: migrants resettled internationally and evaluated for specific health concerns.

BACKGROUND: Increasing international migration may challenge healthcare providers unfamiliar with acute and long latency infections and diseases common in this population. This study defines health conditions encountered in a large heterogenous group of migrants. METHODS: Migrants seen at GeoSentinel clinics for any reason, other than those seen at clinics only providing comprehensive protocol-based health screening soon after arrival, were included. Proportionate morbidity for syndromes and diagnoses by country or region of origin were determined and compared. RESULTS: A total of 7629 migra

Association between mental health and sleep quality among Forcibly Displaced Rohingya pregnant women living in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh: a cross-sectional observation.

BACKGROUND: Poor sleep quality during pregnancy is associated with adverse health and developmental outcomes for both mother and fetus. Various factors may influence sleep quality, including mental health problems, stressful life circumstances, pregnancy, illness, and socio-demographic conditions. These links have been explored in refugees and asylees residing in high-income countries. There is a notable gap in the literature regarding the association of mental health and sleep quality among conflict and displacement-affected populations residing in low- and middle-income countries and exposed…

Pediatric Insight to Humanitarian and Trauma Crisis Response: Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center.

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric patients account for disproportionate medical resource utilization in times of disaster and war. This was demonstrated in 2021 during Operation Allies Refuge/Operation Allies Welcome (OAR/OAW) following withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan. Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC), a U.S. military hospital in Germany, played a pivotal role in medical support for evacuees from Afghanistan, including critically injured children. The objective of this study is to define the injury and disease patterns of pediatric patients admitted to LRMC during OAR/OAW. MATERIALS

Are migration routes disease transmission routes? Understanding Hepatitis and HIV transmission amongst undocumented Pakistani migrants and asylum seekers in a Parisian suburb.

Drawing on hospital-based interviews and fieldwork in a deprived Parisian suburb, this paper analyses the spatio-temporal dynamics of risk, exposure, and mobilities in individual stories of undocumented Pakistani male migrants, and asylum seekers-receiving treatment for single and combined diagnoses of HIV, and Hepatitis C and B. Inviting alignments with the 'sexual' turn in mobility studies, it prioritises the interface of all-male undocumented migration, mobility, sexuality, and homosociality in circumscribing disease transmission geneaologies. It questions the extent to which illegal migrat

Universal screening for latent and active tuberculosis (TB) in asylum seeking children, Bochum and Hamburg, Germany, September 2015 to November 2016.

BackgroundIn Germany, the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in children has been on the rise since 2009. High numbers of foreign-born asylum seekers have contributed considerably to the disease burden. Therefore, effective screening strategies for latent TB infection (LTBI) and active TB in asylum seeking children are needed. Aim: Our aim was to investigate the prevalence of LTBI and active TB in asylum seeking children up to 15 years of age in two geographic regions in Germany. Methods: Screening for TB was performed in children in asylum seeker reception centres by tuberculin skin test (TST) or
