Schmallenberg virus--is it present in South Africa?

In July 2006, a case of two out of three lambs born to one ewe in a flock of 45 had signs that, in retrospect, were possibly consistent with Schmallenberg virus infection. This occurred in the Onderstepoort area (Gauteng Province) but a definitive diagnosis was not made. Then, in May 2008, a farmer in the Delmas area (Mpumalanga Province) reported that deformed lambs had been born to several ewes in the flock. Six of the approximately 50 mated ewes gave birth to lambs showing varying degrees of arthrogryposis, torticollis, kyphosis, mandibular brachygnathia and hydrocephalus. Of these, only tw

Humoral immunity against Francisella tularensis after natural infection.

Forty-two subjects with acute tularemia were studied for the occurrence of C-reactive protein (CRP), and 73 subjects with acute tularemia or experience of the disease within the last 11 years were studied for immunoglobulin M (IgM), IgA, and IgG class-specific antibodies, agglutinating antibodies, and complement-fixing antibodies to Francisella tularensis by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), the tube agglutination test, and a complement-fixing ELISA. The incubation time between infection and the outbreak of symptoms varied from 1 to 10 days, averaging 6.5 days. Elevated CRP c

STUDIES IN THE SEROLOGY OF SYPHILIS : IV. A MORE SENSITIVE ANTIGEN FOR USE IN THE WASSERMANN REACTION.

The discovery (1) that there are many substances with the sensitizing properties hitherto believed peculiar to cholesterol and its derivatives, and (2) that sensitizer can be added to antigen in very large quantities, many times those currently used, and yet continue to increase its complement-fixing efficiency with no danger of giving falsely positive tests has made possible the preparation of an antigen much more sensitive than any now available for use in the Wassermann reaction. 100 gm. of dry powdered beef heart muscle are extracted with 500 cc. ether for 15 minutes at 37 degrees C. with

Brucella suis biovar 2 isolations from cattle in Poland.

Bovine brucellosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the Brucella genus, primarily by B. abortus, less frequently by B. melitensis, and occasionally by B. suis. In the European Union, brucellosis in cattle has been eradicated in most of the Member States, which are recognized as 'officially free from bovine brucellosis'. Nevertheless, cattle herds continue to be serologically monitored for the potential re-emergence of the disease. The aim of the presented study was to show the results of bacteriological investigations of cattle slaughtered in Poland in years 2002-2011 on account

Antigenic, chemical, and structural properties of cell walls of Histoplasma capsulatum yeast-form chemotypes 1 and 2 after serial enzymatic hydrolysis.

Cell walls of Histoplasma capsulatum yeast-form chemotypes 1 (chem 1) and 2 (chem 2) treated sequentially with several polysaccharolytic enzymes and Pronase yielded soluble, nondialyzable polysaccharides at each step, which were analyzed for monosaccharides, protein composition, and serological activity. Polysaccharide recovered after digestion of chem 1 walls with beta(1-->3)-glucanase contained glucose > mannose > glucosamine > galactose. This fraction (chem 1 betaG(1)) was analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and contained a component having an apparent molecular weight of 120,000

Histoplasma capsulatum Complement Fixation and Immunodiffusion Assay Sensitivity in Culture-Confirmed Cases of Histoplasmosis: a 10-Year Retrospective Review (2011 to 2020).

The detection of antibodies against Histoplasma capsulatum remains a frequently relied-on approach to diagnose histoplasmosis. We retrospectively assessed the performances of complement fixation (CF) and immunodiffusion (ID) assays for anti-Histoplasma antibody detection in patients with culture-confirmed histoplasmosis at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) over a 10-year period (2011 to 2020). Among 67 culture-confirmed patients who also had H. capsulatum CF/ID testing ordered, 51 (67.1%) were immunocompromised, 34 (50.7%) had localized disease, and 51 (76.1%) presented with <3 months of symptoms be

Diagnostic Findings in a Confirmed Outbreak of Brucella ovis Infection in a Traditional Sheep Farm in Sicily (South-Italy).

Aim of this study is to report a laboratory investigation performed following the isolation of Brucella ovis, causing ovine epididymitis, in a traditional sheep farm in Sicily (South Italy). This disease represents a newly emerging risk for Italian livestock and is listed among diseases of EU priority (EU Reg 2016/429). Blood samples from 56 rams and 143 ewes were analyzed by both Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) and Complement Fixation Test (CFT). Genital swabs from all rams and 15 lactating ewes were collected to perform real-time PCR. Eighteen serologically positive rams were slaug

Piroplasmosis in an endemic area: analysis of the risk factors and their implications in the control of Theileriosis and Babesiosis in horses.

Theileria equi (Laveran 1901) and Babesia caballi (Nuttall and Strickland 1910) are the causative agents of Equine Piroplasmosis (EP), a severe and problematic disease compromising international movement of horses. Infected horses usually become asymptomatic carriers and, for this reason, their movement across borders may become restricted. The aim of this study was to assess the seroprevalence of EP in Southern France and to evaluate risk factors associated with these parasites. In 2002, we performed a complement fixation test (CF) with blood samples from 443 horses stabled at 95 different fa

Investigating Coxiella burnetii infection in a breeding cattery at the centre of a Q fever outbreak.

The potential role of cats in transmitting Coxiella burnetii to humans was highlighted in a Q fever outbreak, linked to a caesarean section in a breeding queen, in an Australian small animal veterinary hospital. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the C burnetii seroreactivity of the breeding queen and other cats residing at the same breeding cattery (n = 27) and to evaluate C burnetii infection of the breeding queen by molecular and histological methods. Three assays [complement fixation test (CFT), indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA

Detection and characterization of avian leukosis virus in Marek's disease vaccines.

Avian leukosis virus (ALV) infection in chickens is known to induce increased mortality, tumors, delayed growth, and suboptimal egg production. Countries importing specified pathogen-free eggs, vaccines, and poultry breeding stock require freedom of infection or contamination with ALV in such products among other avian pathogens. Recently, ALV was found as a contaminant in a limited number of commercial poultry vaccines, even after routine quality assurance procedures cleared the vaccines for commercialization. The contaminated vaccines were promptly withdrawn from the market, and no direct de

High prevalence of antibodies to lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus in a murine typhus endemic region in Croatia.

A retrospective serological survey was carried out by the indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) and complement fixation (CF) test in a sample of 425 healthy residents (240 females and 185 males) to investigate whether Lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) circulates in the rural area of the northern Croatian island of Vir, which is known to be endemic for murine typhus. The overall prevalence of LCMV antibodies detected by IFA was found to be 36% (155 out of 425) and 13% (54 out of 425) by CF. No significant difference in the LCMV seroprevalence was observed with respect to age and gende

[Flavivirus: serological survey in horses from the Tandil area].

Sera from 282 equines from Tandil country and surroundings were investigated searching for hemagglutination inhibition (HI), Complement fixation (CF), and Neutralizing (NT) antibodies against three flavivirus:Ilheus, St. Louis Encephalitis, and Yellow Fever from the Togaviridae family. Sera were collected between 3-20-79 and 11-25-80 from 10 different places in Tandil and Ayacucho countries. Animals ranged from 45 days to 27 years old. Forty nine of them reacted with one or more flavivirus by HI and/or CF tes representing a prevalence of 17.4% for this antigenic complex. Twenty four of them ne
