The prevalence of Pediculus humanus capitis and the coexistence of intestinal parasites in young children in boarding schools in Sivas, Turkey.

The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Pediculus humanus capitis and the coexistence of intestinal parasites in boarding primary schools in Sivas, Turkey. Seven hundred seventy-two students (350 [45.3%] girls, 422 [54.7%] boys) were evaluated with combing for the presence of head lice, collection of fecal samples, and examination of the perianal region for intestinal parasites using the cellophane tape method. The overall infestation rate for head lice was 6% (n=46). Nine children had evidence of nits only (1.2%), whereas living lice and nits or eggs were found in 37 childr

The effectiveness of 4 monthly albendazole treatment in the reduction of soil-transmitted helminth infections in women of reproductive age in Viet Nam.

Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are endemic in northern Viet Nam where the climate and agricultural practices, such as the use of human excreta as fertiliser and the use of wastewater for irrigation, favour transmission. An intervention was conducted in Yen Bai Province, north-west Viet Nam, to measure the effectiveness of single dose albendazole (400mg) administered every 4 months for reducing the prevalence of STH infections in women of reproductive age. Stool samples were collected from women before the intervention and 3 and 12 months post-intervention. Information on a range of

Soil-transmitted helminth infections in Nigerian children aged 0-25 months.

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence and intensity of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) in children aged 0-25 months and to identify the associated risk factors for Ascaris lumbricoides infections. The study was conducted in three villages outside Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria in May/June 2005. Stool samples (369) were processed by formol-ether concentration. Ascaris lumbricoides (12.2%) was the dominant infection. Age, father's occupation and dog ownership were identified as the significant risk factors in the minimal adequate model for A. lumbricoides. Intestinal protozoa and helminths among Terena Indians in the State of Mato Grosso do Sul: high prevalence of Blastocystis hominis.

A parasitological survey was carried out among Terena Indians living in the Tereré settlement in the municipality of Sidrolândia, State of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Single samples of feces from 313 Indians were processed by means of the spontaneous sedimentation method. In the population studied, 73.5% were infected with at least one intestinal parasite or commensal. Protozoa predominated. Blastocystis hominis (40.9%), Entamoeba coli (33.2%) and Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar (31.6%) were the most common. Bivariate analysis showed that females were generally more infected and present

Morphometric discrimination of two allozymically diagnosed sibling species of the Echinorhynchus gadi Zoega in Muller complex (Acanthocephala) in the North Sea.

Allozyme electrophoresis was used to detect biological species of the E. gadi complex from gadids from the northern North Sea. A fixed difference at one of nine enzyme loci surveyed confirmed the existence of two reproductively isolated, sympatric species. Mixed infections of two E. gadi spp. (termed A and B) were observed in Gadus morhua and Pollachius virens. E. gadi sp. B was also found in Melanogrammus aeglefinus and Merlangius merlangus. The presence of gravid females of E. gadi spp. A and B in the same host species, P. virens, and sometimes in the same host individual, indicates that nei

The effect of different anthelmintic treatment regimens combined with iron supplementation on the nutritional status of schoolchildren in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: a randomized controlled trial.

A randomized controlled trial in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) of 428 primary-school pupils (stratified into 6 groups by age, sex and intervention) measured the effect of different anthelmintic treatments and iron supplementation regimens provided twice at 6-monthly intervals for 1 year (1996/97). Half the pupils received iron supplementation (ferrous fumarate 200 mg weekly for 10 weeks). Pupils received 2 anthelmintic regimens, either (i) albendazole 400 mg plus praziquantel 40 mg/kg or (ii) albendazole 400 mg on 3 consecutive days plus praziquantel 40 mg/kg or (iii) placebo. Children's consumption of dark green, leafy vegetables with added fat enhances serum retinol.

A randomized, double-blind, controlled study was conducted to determine whether the consumption of leafy vegetables by preschool children would enhance their serum vitamin A concentration to acceptable levels. Preschool children (n = 519; 2.5-6 y) in Saboba, northern Ghana, were randomly assigned to five feeding groups, differing essentially in the amount of fat and beta-carotene, fed once per d, 7 d per wk, for 3 mo. Serum retinol levels, anthropometric measurements, hemoglobin, rapid turnover proteins (pre-albumin and retinol-binding protein), worm infestation (stool examinations) and level

The compromised traveler.

Compromised travelers represent a diverse and challenging group of individuals. They include HIV-infected patients who are at risk for potentially adverse reactions to immunizations, and new exposures to enteric water-borne opportunistic pathogens associated with chronic infections. Such travelers may encounter unfamiliar opportunistic fungi and classical tropical infections, such as leishmaniasis, whose pathogenesis can be enhanced by the presence of prior HIV infection. Other immunocompromised groups include those who are functionally or anatomically asplenic, and patients who are iatrogenic

Granulomatous infections: etiology and classification.

Granulomatous disorders are frequently due to a wide variety of infections. Over the past decade advances in molecular diagnostic techniques have allowed identification of organisms involved in granulomatous disorders that previously were of unknown etiology. On the basis of currently available information, granulomatous infections can now be classified in three categories. Group 1 infections are due to a well-recognized organism. Group 2 comprises infections due to organisms that have been recently identified in granulomas by molecular methods but are not readily isolated by conventional micr

Detection of density-dependent growth and fecundity of helminths in natural infections.

Density-dependent constraints on parasite growth, survival or reproduction are thought to be important in preventing the unchecked increase in parasite numbers within individual hosts or host populations. While it is important to know where, and with what severity, density dependence is acting within the parasite life-cycle, interpretation of data from natural infections is difficult. In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo simulation technique for examining such data for evidence of density dependence. We also describe how this technique may be used to distinguish among mechanisms hypothesize

Regulation and biological function of helminth-induced cytokine responses.

The immunological hallmarks of infection with parasitic helminths, namely eosinophilia, mastocytosis and increased IgE synthesis, all appear to be induced by cytokines from the TH2 subset of CD4+ T cells: IgE production is stimulated by interleukin 4 (IL-4), eosinophilia by IL-5 and mastocytosis by IL-3 and IL-4. Here, Fred Finkelman and colleagues argue that the functional significance of the eosinophilia-mastocytosis-IgE axis in helminth infection is unclear and suggest that in some worm infections TH2-cell cytokines may contribute to host protection, while in others they may promote parasit

Circulating parasite antigen(s) in lymphatic filariasis: use of monoclonal antibodies to phosphocholine for immunodiagnosis.

Hybridoma cell lines producing monoclonal antibodies (MAb) against a 200 kD antigen found circulating in the sera of microfilaremic patients infected with Wuchereria bancrofti were obtained by immunizing mice with a partially purified antigen preparation. A sensitive MAb (CA101)-based ELISA for measuring circulating parasite antigen was capable of detecting antigen in the sera of 93% of patients with microfilaremia, 46% of those with lymphatic obstruction, and 56% of patients with tropical pulmonary eosinophilia syndrome. Circulating antigen was absent from sera of normal controls, and "false

Evaluating short-term changes in helminth burdens using sequential community-based surveys in Rwanda.

Despite sustained national mass drug administration (MDA) efforts, soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) and Schistosomiasis (SCH) remain endemic in Rwanda, suggesting that elimination requires granular planning and interventions. This study aimed to evaluate short-term changes in infection prevalence and intensity at selected sentinel sites and assess risk factors associated with persistent transmission. A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted twelve months after a baseline survey and two rounds of national MDA. Parasitological, sociodemographic and household water, sanitation, and

Diagnosing helminth infections in a large reference laboratory in the United States: a 6-month pre- and post-implementation analysis of AI-augmented screening of concentrated fecal wet mounts.

Helminth infections are uncommon in the United States, yet accurate detection remains critical. Conventional ova-and-parasite examinations are labor-intensive and prone to error in low-prevalence settings. We evaluated the impact of implementing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based wet mount screening platform (WM-AI) in a high-volume reference laboratory. Detection rates, turnaround times, and specimen characteristics were compared across two 6-month periods before and after WM-AI implementation. Post-implementation, helminth detection increased from 29 to 104 patients, and client-level posi

ILC3s promote intestinal tuft cell hyperplasia and anthelmintic immunity through RANK signaling.

Helminth infections, particularly in developing countries, remain a notable health burden worldwide. Group 3 innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s) are enriched in the intestine and play a critical role in immunity against extracellular bacteria and fungi. However, whether ILC3s are involved in intestinal helminth infection is still unclear. Here, we report that helminth infection reprograms ILC3s, which, in turn, promote anthelmintic immunity. ILC3-derived RANKL [receptor activator of NF-κB (nuclear factor κB) ligand] synergizes with interleukin-13 (IL-13) to facilitate intestinal tuft cell expansion

Soil-Transmitted Helminths and the Intricacies of Immunoregulation: Evidence From Amazonian Ecuador for the Importance of Considering Species-Specific Effects Within the Old Friends Hypothesis.

OBJECTIVES: The old friends hypothesis (OFH) examines connections between the global increase in immunoregulatory diseases (e.g., allergy and autoimmunity) and reduced exposure to immune-priming symbionts like soil-transmitted helminths. Helminth species, however, vary in their effects on hosts and should be considered separately. We examined relationships between species-specific helminth infection and circulating biomarkers of adaptive immune antibodies (total immunoglobulin E [IgE]), systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein [CRP]), and immune regulation (interleukin-6 [IL-6]), among Indige
