[Source monitoring: general presentation and review of literature in schizophrenia].

UNLABELLED: SOURCE MONITORING FRAMEWORK: Source monitoring refers to the ability to remember the origin of information. Three source monitoring processes can be distinguished: external source monitoring, internal or self-monitoring and reality monitoring (i.e. discrimination between internal and external sources of information). Source monitoring decisions are based on memory characteristics recorded such as perceptions, contextual information or emotional reactions and heuristic or more controlled judgement processes. BRAIN STRUCTURES: Several studies suggested that specific structures in th

Mental motor imagery indexes pain: the hand laterality task.

Mental motor imagery is subserved by the same cognitive systems that underlie action. In turn, action is informed by the anticipated sensory consequences of movement, including pain. In light of these considerations, one would predict that motor imagery would provide a useful measure pain-related functional interference. We report a study in which 19 patients with chronic musculoskeletal or radiculopathic arm or shoulder pain, 24 subjects with chronic pain not involving the arm/shoulder and 41 normal controls were asked to indicate if a line drawing was a right or left hand. Previous work demo

Effects of affective pictures on pain sensitivity and cortical responses induced by laser stimuli in healthy subjects and migraine patients.

Visually induced analgesia has been correlated with the affective content of pleasant, neutral or unpleasant pictures. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of affective images vision on laser evoked potentials and pain perception, in a cohort of healthy subjects and migraine patients. Twenty-two healthy subjects and 24 migraine without aura patients (recorded during the inter-critical phase) participated in the study. Eighty-four colour slides, arranged in two blocks, each consisting of 14 pleasant, 14 unpleasant and 14 neutral images, in random presentation, were chosen from

Different motor imagery modes following brain damage.

In recent years, many researches have explored the relationship between overt and covert motor activity (i.e., mental simulation). Consistent evidence has been provided in favour of close similarities between the two functions, particularly based on behavioural and neuroimaging studies on healthy participants. Interestingly, literature on the pathological population remains largely controversial. Yet, a clear understanding of whether and how mental simulation is modified by overt motor disorders is far from a speculative question, especially in view of the increasing interest for the use of me

Mapping mental number line in physical space: vertical and horizontal visual number line orientation in asymptomatic individuals with HIV.

Multiple studies have implicated frontostriatal dysfunction in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and described cognitive deficits with a focus on executive function and memory. Remarkably little is known about visuospatial and number processing in HIV, though these capacities are also supported by frontostriatal circuits and their parietal connections. We investigated the relation of numerical and spatial cognition in asymptomatic individuals with HIV and explored physical and mental number orientation using several modes of presentation and response: mental number line bisection, physical li

Sensed presence as a correlate of sleep paralysis distress, social anxiety and waking state social imagery.

Isolated sleep paralysis (ISP) is a common parasomnia characterized by an inability to move or speak and often accompanied by hallucinations of a sensed presence nearby. Recent research has linked ISP, and sensed presence more particularly, with social anxiety and other psychopathologies. The present study used a large sample of respondents to an internet questionnaire (N=193) to test whether these associations are due to a general personality factor, affect distress, which is implicated in nightmare suffering and hypothesized to involve dysfunctional social imagery processes. A new measure, I

What is the role of motor simulation in action and object recognition? Evidence from apraxia.

An important issue in contemporary cognitive neuroscience concerns the role of motor production processes in perceptual and conceptual analysis. To address this issue, we studied the performance of a large group of unilateral stroke patients across a range of tasks using the same set of common manipulable objects. All patients (n = 37) were tested for their ability to demonstrate the use of the objects, recognize the objects, recognize the corresponding object-associated pantomimes, and imitate those same pantomimes. At the group level we observed reliable correlations between object use and p

Effects of late visual impairment on mental representations activated by visual and tactile stimuli.

Similarly to sighted people, individuals congenitally affected by a severe visual impairment can maintain and mentally manipulate spatial information about tactile stimuli [Vecchi, T., Cattaneo, Z., Monegato, M., Pece, A., Cornoldi, C., Pietrini, P., 2006. Why Cyclops could not compete with Ulysses: monocular vision and mental images. NeuroReport 17, 723-726]. The aim of the present study was to assess whether the onset timing of a severe (but not total) sight loss may influence spatial imagery abilities based on haptic input. To this purpose, a group of late severe visually impaired people an

Two systems for colour-naming defects: verbal disconnection vs colour imagery disorder.

Two subjects affected by pure alexia and showing no central dyschromatopsia or generalized aphasia, performed poorly on traditional tasks with visually-presented colour stimuli and on tasks with objects presented verbally. Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the possible role of mental colour imagery in recalling the colours of objects from memory. It was concluded that Case I, with left occipital lobe softening, had preserved imagery systems, but failed to recode the colours of mentally generated colour images, just as he failed to name visually presented colours, suggesting a langua

EEG response varies with lesion location in patients with chronic stroke.

BACKGROUND: Brain activation differs according to lesion location in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies, but lesion location-dependent electroencephalographic (EEG) alterations are unclear. Because of the increasing use of EEG-based brain-computer-interface rehabilitation, we examined lesion location-dependent EEG patterns in patients with stroke while they performed motor tasks. METHODS: Twelve patients with chronic stroke were divided into three subgroups according to their lesion locations: supratentorial lesions that included M1 (SM1+), supratentorial lesions that exclud

Kinesthetic motor imagery modulates intermuscular coherence.

Intermuscular coherence can identify oscillatory coupling between two electromyographic (EMG) signals, measuring common presynaptic drive to motor neurons. Beta band oscillations (15-30 Hz) are hypothesized to originate largely from primary motor cortex, and are reduced during dynamic relative to static motor tasks. It has yet to be established whether motor imagery modulates beta intermuscular coherence. Using visual feedback, 10 unimpaired participants completed eighteen trials of pinching their right thumb and index finger at a constant force. During the 60-second trials, participants simul

The brain's voices: comparing nonclinical auditory hallucinations and imagery.

Although auditory verbal hallucinations are often thought to denote mental illness, the majority of voice hearers do not satisfy the criteria for a psychiatric disorder. Here, we report the first functional imaging study of such nonclinical hallucinations in 7 healthy voice hearers comparing them with auditory imagery. The human voice area in the superior temporal sulcus was activated during both hallucinations and imagery. Other brain areas supporting both hallucinations and imagery included fronto temporal language areas in the left hemisphere and their contralateral homologues and the suppl

Frequency and nature of rumination in chronic depression: a preliminary study.

This study explores the phenomenological experience of rumination in a sample of 22 chronically depressed people and looks at the extent to which it is consistent with theoretical ideas. The findings indicate that, on average, depressed people ruminate about at least two different topics, and that there is wide variability in how long each episode lasts. Rumination is a complex process frequently involving imagery as well as verbal thoughts and is almost invariably associated with multiple emotions. Although there was some evidence for stop rules being involved, most individuals attributed end

Formation and lateralization of internal representations underlying motor commands during precision grip.

The capability to store and retrieve weight-related information from a lift to scale the force output during a subsequent lift was examined in 10 healthy adults and 50 children (age 2-10 years), as well as a 22-year-old patient with corpus callosum agenesis. Subjects lifted a test object between the thumb and index finger while the isometric fingertip forces were measured. The results suggest that both healthy children and adults can transfer weight-related information between the right and left hand, although a lateralization was found. Also, the storage and retrieval of weight-related inform

Visual imagery and visual semantics in the cerebral hemispheres in schizophrenia.

Divided visual field tasks were given to normal subjects, and patients with schizophrenia and affective disorder, to investigate hemisphere differences in the visual processing of standardised pictorial stimuli. There were two conditions: in the first, subjects were asked to decide whether a common entity represented by a picture was living or non-living, a task involving a categorical judgement based on semantic information; a left hemisphere task. In the second condition, subjects judged whether these depictions represented entities which were bigger or smaller than a cat; a right hemisphere

Defective revisualization: dissociation between cognitive and imagistic thought case report and short review of the literature.

A 38-year-old shifted-sinistral patient displayed a definite deficit in visual imagery accompanied by defective dreaming capacity, loss of hypnagogic imagery, some defects in topographical memory, a mild unilateral right spatial neglect and mild difficulties in right-left orientation on the examiner's body. CT-scan and NMR studies showed evidence of an inborn hypoplasia of the right hemisphere and a stretched corpus callosum in its posterior and superior part. The vicarious compensatory action of the cognitive-verbal function of the defect of visual imagery was obvious. It is concluded that: t

[Functional brain plasticity associated with motor learning].

This review presents the results of studies carried out in our laboratory that aim to investigate, through functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), the brain plasticity associated with motor sequence learning, defined as our ability to integrate simple stereotyped movements into a single motor representation. Following a brief description of Doyon and colleagues' model (2002, 2005, 2009) of motor skill learning that has guided this work, we then describe the functional changes that occur at the different (rapid, slow, automatization) acquisition phases, and propose specific roles that the

Source monitoring for actions in adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS).

BACKGROUND: Source monitoring consists in identifying the origin of mental events. Recent research suggests that confusions over internally generated mental events may represent a cognitive marker for increased proneness to psychotic symptoms and disorders. We have examined source monitoring for actions in adolescents with the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a neurogenetic disease associated with high rates of schizophrenia during adulthood, and expected to observe source monitoring deficits in comparison to IQ-matched and typically developing controls. METHOD: Eighteen adolescents with

Counterfactual cognitive deficit in persons with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Counterfactuals are mental representations of alternatives to past events. Recent research has shown them to be important for other cognitive processes, such as planning, causal reasoning, problem solving, and decision making-all processes independently linked to the frontal lobes. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that counterfactual thinking is impaired in some patients with Parkinson's disease and is linked to frontal dysfunction in these patients. Methods. Measures of counterfactual processing and frontal lobe functioning were administered to 24 persons with Parkinson's diseas
