Aluminum in Neurological and Neurodegenerative Disease.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

With continuing cooperation from 18 domestic and international brain banks over the last 36 years, we have analyzed the aluminum content of the temporal lobe neocortex of 511 high-quality human female brain samples from 16 diverse neurological and neurodegenerative disorders, including 2 groups of age-matched controls. Temporal lobes (Brodmann areas A20-A22) were selected for analysis because of their availability and their central role in massive information-processing operations including efferent-signal integration, cognition, and memory formation. We used the analytical technique of (i) Ze

Progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy with unusual inflammatory response during antiretroviral treatment.

A case of biopsy verified progressive multifocal leucoencephalopathy (PML) in an HIV patient is presented. Imaging and histological examination confirmed remarkable inflammatory activity accompanied by an unusually benign clinical course despite no clear evidence of immune reconstitution after the start of antiretroviral treatment. This case not only raises several questions regarding the pathophysiology of PML, but gives also evidence that AIDS associated inflammatory PML must be considered another clinical entity in the expanding range of diseases now commonly referred to as the immune recon

Correlation between anti-JC-virus and anti-cytomegalovirus, -Epstein-Barr virus and -measles/-rubella/-varicella-zoster-virus antibodies.

Anti-JCV antibody status is used for PML-risk-stratification in MS patients before and during Natalizumab therapy. JCV antibodies can be detected in around 60% of MS patients, however, only a small proportion actually develop PML. As anti-viral antibodies tend to occur unspecifically, the aim of this study was to correlate JCV antibody status and index with other common anti-viral antibodies. A total of 123 samples of MS-patients were tested for anti-JCV antibodies by JCV-Stratify-ELISA at Unilabs, Denmark. The same samples were analyzed for measles, rubella, varicella zoster, EBV, and CMV IgG

Central facial palsy revisited: a clinical-radiological study.

We investigated the pattern of volitional facial motor deficits in acute stroke patients. We assessed the strength of single facial movements and correlated it to the site of infarct classified on computed tomography scans. Exclusion criteria were previous stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, and subcortical stroke. Results showed that weakness in eyelid closure was associated with anterior cerebral artery (ACA) stroke. Weakness in lip opening was associated with middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke. We suggest that sparing of upper facial movements in MCA stroke is due to the presence of an upper face

White matter dementia in CADASIL.

Cerebral white matter disorders may be associated with profound neurobehavioral dysfunction. We report a 62-year-old man who had a slowly progressive 25-year history of personality change, psychosis, mood disorder, and dementia. Neurologic examination disclosed abulia, impaired memory retrieval, and preserved language, with only minimal motor impairment. Neuropsychological testing found a sustained attention deficit, cognitive slowing, impaired learning with intact recognition, and perseveration. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain revealed extensive leukoencephalopathy. Right frontal brai

[Evoked potentials. Indications and diagnostic significance].

Visual, auditory and somatosensory evoked potentials are useful in the detection and localization of demyelinating lesions, which mainly cause a slowing of conduction and therefore a latency increase in the evoked potential. Primarily amplitude reductions or loss of the response are seen in partial or complete impulse conduction blocks due to a tumor e.g. Acoustic nerve tumors can be detected by AEP, orbit tumors or processes of the chiasm by VEP and spinal cord tumors by SEP. The use of evoked potentials for the evaluation of ophthalmologic disorders, for audiometry in children and for monito

[Carasil].

Cerebral autosomal recessive arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CARASIL) is a single-gene disorder directly affecting the cerebral small blood vessels, that is caused by mutations in the HTRA1 gene encoding HtrA serine peptidase/protease 1 (HTRA1). CARASIL is the second known genetic form of ischemic, nonhypertensive, cerebral small-vessel diseases with an identified gene, following CADASIL (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy). The exact prevalence of CARASIL is currently unknown, and so far about 50 patients

Immune responses to JC virus in patients with multiple sclerosis treated with natalizumab: a cross-sectional and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Natalizumab is used to prevent relapses and progression of disability in patients with multiple sclerosis but has been associated with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML). We aimed to better understand the associations between JC virus, which causes PML, and natalizumab treatment. METHODS: We prospectively assessed patients with multiple sclerosis who started treatment with natalizumab. Blood and urine samples were tested for the presence of JC virus DNA with quantitative real-time PCR before treatment and at regular intervals after treatment onset for up to 18 months

[The role of brain magnetic resonance studies in the diagnostics of central nervous system lesions in HIV-1 positive patients].

UNLABELLED: Approximately 10% of persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and 75-90% patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) present neurological symptoms. This group causes the greatest diagnostic difficulties among AIDS patients. The purpose of the study was to demonstrate the usefulness of the magnetic resonance imaging (MR) of the central nervous system (CNS) in the diagnosis and differentiation of primary and secondary lesions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty one patients with the symptoms suggesting CNS involvement were enrolled into the study. In 40 of them

Central nervous system lymphoma in children.

This paper describes the rare MR and CT features of central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma in immunocompetent children and in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and discusses the causative role of cranial irradiation and/or leukoencephalopathy preceding central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma in survivors of childhood leukemia. The authors reviewed MR and CT scans of 3 children with biopsy-proved CNS lymphoma. One child had tumor infiltration within the optic nerve sheaths and optic chiasm by previously known non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In 2 patients, CNS lymphoma developed 8 and

[Magnetic resonance imaging findings of the brain in adult HIV and AIDS patients].

The spectrum of pathology affecting the central nervous system (CNS) in patients suffering from acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) includes not only the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection itself but also opportunistic infections and tumors secondary to AIDS. Despite progress in antiretroviral therapy and the subsequent decrease in the incidence of associated diseases, opportunistic infections and tumors secondary to the HIV infection continue to be the limiting factor in terms of survival with AIDS. Therefore, the therapeutic aim is permanent antiretroviral therapy as well as

Mutation of the Notch 3 gene in a Thai cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy family.

The authors report the first Thai family with cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL) in which the family members had a classical history of progressive vascular dementia. The proband was a 31-year old Thai male who presented with an acute stroke in the subcortical region. His past history revealed mental disturbance, including poor judgement and regressive behavior as well as mood changes for 1 year. He did not have a history of migraine or any other vascular risk factors except for a strong family history of ischemic stroke and pro

[Atypical CADASIL phenotypes and pathological findings in two new French families].

Atypical phenotypes of CADASIL and corresponding anatomical data in two cases are described in 6 members of 2 new French families. In the first family, 4 cases in the same kindred were probably affected, two of them with a predominant psychiatric presentation, two others with dementia and a pseudo-bulbar syndrome of progressive evolution. No history of migraine or ischemic event were documented in any. In the propositus, the diagnosis was documented by skin biopsy, Notch 3 gene mutation and autopsy after the patient had died when 67 years old, 8 years after onset. Brain examination showed a wi

Cerebroretinal vasculopathy and leukoencephalopathy mimicking a brain tumor. Report of two early-onset cases with Fanconi's anemia-like phenotypes suggesting an autosomal-recessive inheritance pattern.

We report two sisters affected with a unique disorder characterized by recurrent space-occupying brain lesions and retinal vasculopathy since their early twenties. Affection status was associated with abnormalities characteristic of Fanconi's anemia, i.e. aplastic anemia, microcephaly, short stature, an unusual face and pigmentation abnormalities of skin. In cytogenetic analyses performed in childhood signs of chromosome fragility or any chromosomal aberration were lacking. Histopathological examination of brain biopsy samples in both cases demonstrated identical histomorphological features of

HIV-p24-antigen-bearing macrophages are only present in brains of HIV-seropositive patients with AIDS-encephalopathy.

The central nervous system of HIV-seropositive patients with and without AIDS-encephalopathy was investigated by immunocytochemistry using the monoclonal antibody to the HIV-1 p24 core protein. Numerous p24-immunopositive mono- and multinucleated macrophages could only be detected in patients with typical histological pictures of an AIDS-encephalopathy. These findings allow the supposition that AIDS-dementia is a result of a relatively late infiltration of HIV-infected macrophages from the bloodstream into the brain and is not due to an impairment of neuronal and/or glial cells infected by HIV
