fMRI of global visual perception in simultanagnosia.

The integration of visual elements into global perception seems to be implemented separately to single object perception. This assumption is supported by the existence of patients with simultanagnosia who can identify single objects but are incapable of integrating multiple visual items. We investigated a case of simultanagnosia due to posterior cortical atrophy without structural brain damage who demonstrated an incomplete simultanagnosia. The patient successfully recognized a global stimulus in one trial but failed to do so just a few seconds later. Using event-related fMRI, we contrasted po

Simultaneous recording of macaque premotor and primary motor cortex neuronal populations reveals different functional contributions to visuomotor grasp.

To understand the relative contributions of primary motor cortex (M1) and area F5 of the ventral premotor cortex (PMv) to visually guided grasp, we made simultaneous multiple electrode recordings from the hand representations of these two areas in two adult macaque monkeys. The monkeys were trained to fixate, reach out and grasp one of six objects presented in a pseudorandom order. In M1 326 task-related neurons, 104 of which were identified as pyramidal tract neurons, and 138 F5 neurons were analyzed as separate populations. All three populations showed activity that distinguished the six obj

Proactive interference in a semantic short-term memory deficit: role of semantic and phonological relatedness.

Previous research has indicated that patients with semantic short-term memory (STM) deficits demonstrate unusual intrusions of previously presented material during serial recall tasks (Martin and Lesch, 1996). These intrusions suggest excessive proactive interference (PI) from previous lists. Here, we explore one such patient's susceptibility to PI. Experiment 1 demonstrated patient M.L.'s extreme susceptibility to PI using a probe recognition task that manipulates the recency of negative probes (the recent negatives task). When stimuli consisted of letters, M.L. showed greatly exaggerated eff

Use of context in pragmatic language comprehension by children with Asperger syndrome or high-functioning autism.

Utilizing relevance theory, this study investigated the ability of children with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) to use context when answering questions and when giving explanations for their correct answers. Three groups participated in this study: younger AS/HFA group (age 7-9, n=16), older AS/HFA group (age 10-12, n=23) and a normally functioning control group (age 7-9, n=23). The results indicated that the younger AS/HFA group did less well when answering contextually demanding questions compared to the control group, and the performance of the older AS/HFA group f

Altered effective connectivity within the language network in primary progressive aphasia.

Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative dementia syndrome principally characterized by the gradual dissolution of language functions, especially in the early stages of disorder. In a previous functional neuroimaging study, PPA patients were found to activate core language areas similarly to control subjects when performing semantic and phonological processing tasks (Sonty et al., 2003). In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) were used to study multiregional effective connectivity in early-stage PPA (n = 8) and contr

An inverse relationship between typical alcohol consumption and facial symmetry detection ability in young women.

The relationship between monthly alcohol consumption over the past 6 months and facial symmetry perception ability was examined in young sober women with typical college-age drinking patterns. Facial symmetry detection performance was inversely related to typical monthly alcohol consumption, r (41) = -0.57, p < 0.001. Other variables that were predictive of facial symmetry detection included alcohol-related hangover and blackout frequency over the past 6 months, number of alcoholic drinks over the past week, early adolescent alcohol consumption and frequency of drug use. The relationship betwe

Mathematical disabilities in children with velo-cardio-facial syndrome.

Cognitive Neuropsychology, 20, 487-506] state that mathematical performance is made possible by two functionally and anatomically distinct subsystems of number processing: a verbal system located in the angular gyrus, which underlies the retrieval of arithmetic facts, and a quantity system located in the intraparietal sulcus, which subserves operations that involve semantic manipulations of quantity. According to this model, subtypes of ma

fMRI of fearful facial affect recognition in panic disorder: the cingulate gyrus-amygdala connection.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated cingulate cortex (CC) and amygdala response to fearful facial affect recognition in patients with panic disorder (PD) as measured by BOLD fMRI during the presentation of static facial images. METHODS: Eight patients with PD and eight controls were studied. Scanning was performed on a GE Signa 1.5-T scanner. Echo planar and high-resolution MR images were acquired. RESULTS: Controls produced greater CC activation compared to patients with PD in response to fearful faces. Furthermore, patients with PD produced less amygdala activation than controls in respons

Preliminary feasibility and efficacy of a brief motivational intervention with psychophysiological feedback for cocaine abuse.

Motivational interviewing (MI) with personalized feedback, particularly related to biological markers of risk or harm, has been found effective for alcohol use disorders, but has not been fully investigated in cocaine use disorders. A randomized, controlled pilot study evaluating the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a brief MI intervention using EEG/ERP graphical feedback for cocaine abusers was conducted. Treatment-seeking cocaine abusers (N = 31) were randomly assigned to a two-session MI intervention or a minimal control condition. All participants received EEG assessments at intake

Emotional arousal in agenesis of the corpus callosum.

While the processing of verbal and psychophysiological indices of emotional arousal have been investigated extensively in relation to the left and right cerebral hemispheres, it remains poorly understood how both hemispheres normally function together to generate emotional responses to stimuli. Drawing on a unique sample of nine high-functioning subjects with complete agenesis of the corpus callosum (AgCC), we investigated this issue using standardized emotional visual stimuli. Compared to healthy controls, subjects with AgCC showed a larger variance in their cognitive ratings of valence and a

Seeing trees OR seeing forests in simultanagnosia: attentional capture can be local or global.

Patients with simultanagnosia often demonstrate 'local capture', meaning that they identify only the local elements of stimuli that contain a hierarchy of both local and global structures. Recent studies, however, have found that these patients may implicitly process the global form. We examined the general applicability of the concept of local capture, and specifically whether the global level of stimuli can be explicitly reported by patients with simultanagnosia. We tested a patient with simultanagnosia with globally biased stimuli such as hierarchical Arcimboldo faces and small, dense Navon

Mechanisms underlying neglect recovery after prism adaptation.

Prism adaptation (PA) has been demonstrated to be effective in improving hemispatial neglect. However not all patients seem to benefit from this procedure. Thus, the objective of the present work is to provide behavioural and neuroanatomical predictors of recovery by exploring the reorganization of low-order visuo-motor behaviour and high-order visuo-spatial representation induced by PA. To this end, 16 neglect patients (experimental group) were submitted to a PA treatment for 10 daily sessions. Neglect and oculo-motor responses were assessed before the treatment, 1 week, 1 and 3 months after

Can an inert sleeping pill affect sleep? Effects on polysomnographic, behavioral and subjective measures.

RATIONALE: Since two recent meta-analyses on sleep changes associated with placebo in clinical trials suggested a beneficial effect of placebo treatments, pointing to a dissociation between subjective and objective measures of sleep, the current experiment was directly aimed to assess the effects of an inert compound, administered with the suggestion that it was a hypnotic substance in subjects with mild sleep complaints. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare subjective, behavioral, polysomnographic (PSG), and quantitative electroencephalographic (EEG) changes during a night preced

Electrophysiological activity underlying inhibitory control processes in normal adults.

In a recent ERP study of inhibitory control using the Stop-Signal Task [Pliszka, S., Liotti, M., Woldorff, M. (2000). Biological Psychiatry, 48, 238-246], we showed that in normal children (age 10-12 years) the Stop Signals elicited a robust, right-frontal-maximal N200 (latency approximately 200 ms) that was strongly reduced in children with ADHD. Infants of chronically depressed mothers learn in response to male, but not female, infant-directed speech.

Previous research using a conditioned-attention paradigm demonstrated that 4-month-old infants of depressed mothers (a) failed to acquire associations when a segment of their mothers' infant-directed (ID) speech signaled the presentation of a smiling face but (b) did acquire associations when a segment of an unfamiliar nondepressed mother's ID speech signaled the face (P. S. Kaplan, J. -A. Bachorowski, M. J. Smoski, & W. J. Hudenko, 2002). In the present study, 5- to 13-month-old infants of depressed mothers failed to acquire associations when either their own mothers' (Experiment 1) or an unf

The perception of breast cancers--a spatial frequency analysis of what differentiates missed from reported cancers.

The primary detector of breast cancer is the human eye. Radiologists read mammograms by mapping exogenous and endogenous factors, which are based on the image and observer, respectively, into observer-based decisions. These decisions rely on an internal schema that contains a representation of possible malignant and benign findings. Thus, to understand the hits and misses made by the radiologists, it is important to model the interactions between the measurable image-based elements contained in the mammogram and the decisions made. The image-based elements can be of two types, i.e., areas that

Neuropsychologic differences between bilateral dyskinetic and spastic cerebral palsy.

This study compared the neuropsychologic performance of 30 adolescents and adults with bilateral dyskinetic, mixed, and spastic cerebral palsy aged between 16 and 38 years. The sample was relatively homogeneous in terms of motor severity; no patients were able to walk unaided. In all subjects, we evaluated the general function of nonverbal reasoning and the following specific neuropsychologic areas: language, visual perception, memory, praxis, and frontal functions. Individuals with dyskinetic cerebral palsy had better auditory comprehension, visuospatial abilities, immediate visual memory, an

Presentation and task effects on migration errors in attentional dyslexia.

We report a case study of a patient, FL, who shows symptoms of attentional dyslexia. He performs better at reading aloud single words than pairs of words, where he tends to make letter migration errors. These letter migrations are particularly prevalent from the word presented on the right into FL's response to the word presented on the left. Performance on the word pair reading task is improved if the two words are presented in different cases or the space between them is increased. Further, FL performs better at reading a target word if he is only required to name the initial letter of a dis

Human hippocampus and viewpoint dependence in spatial memory.

Virtual reality was used to sequentially present objects within a town square and to test recognition of object locations from the same viewpoint as presentation, or from a shifted viewpoint. A developmental amnesic case with focal bilateral hippocampal pathology showed a massive additional impairment when tested from the shifted viewpoint compared with a mild, list length-dependent, impairment when tested from the same viewpoint. While the same-view condition could be solved by visual pattern matching, the shifted-view condition requires a viewpoint independent representation or an equivalent

Characterizing the neural mechanisms of skill learning and repetition priming: evidence from mirror reading.

The changes in brain activity related to skill learning and repetition priming in a mirror-reading task were examined using functional MRI. Subjects exhibited significant learning across five training sessions and this learning generalized significantly to different spatial transformations (inverted-mirror reversed text and normal letters spelled backwards). Mirror reading, compared with reading normal text, was associated with extensive activation in occipital, temporal, parietal and frontal regions. Learning to read mirror-reversed (MR) text was associated with increased activation in left i
