Chemical Composition, but Not Specific Surface Area, Affects Calcium Retention of Nanostructured Calcium Compounds in Growing Rats.

Background: Low dietary calcium intake and bioavailability may adversely affect bone health. Reducing the size of calcium compounds increases their specific surface area (SSA, expressed as m2/g) and may increase calcium dissolution and bioavailability. Objective: We investigated the influence of SSA and chemical composition on the bioavailability of calcium and compared in vitro calcium dissolution with in vivo absorption. Methods: Calcium dissolution was measured in 0.1 M phosphoric acid, whereas color and pH changes of foods were assessed as indicators for potential sensory performance. Calciu

Higher dietary fructose is associated with impaired hepatic adenosine triphosphate homeostasis in obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.

UNLABELLED: Fructose consumption predicts increased hepatic fibrosis in those with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Because of its ability to lower hepatic adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, habitual fructose consumption could result in more hepatic ATP depletion and impaired ATP recovery. The degree of ATP depletion after an intravenous (IV) fructose challenge test in low- versus high-fructose consumers was assessed. We evaluated diabetic adults enrolled in the Action for Health in Diabetes Fatty Liver Ancillary Study (n = 244) for whom dietary fructose consumption estimated by a 1

Natural organic matter and the event horizon of mass spectrometry.

Soils, sediments, freshwaters, and marine waters contain natural organic matter (NOM), an exceedingly complex mixture of organic compounds that collectively exhibit a nearly continuous range of properties (size-reactivity continuum). NOM is composed mainly of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, with minor contributions from heteroatoms such as nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus. Suwannee River fulvic acid (SuwFA) is a fraction of NOM that is relatively depleted in heteroatoms. Ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron (FTICR) mass spectra of SuwFA reveal several thousand molecular formulas,

Treatment of malignancy-associated hypercalcemia and cachexia with humanized anti-parathyroid hormone-related protein antibody.

Parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) plays a central role in humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM), which is one of the most frequent paraneoplastic syndromes. PTHrP produced by the tumor acts through a common PTH/PTHrP receptor to promote bone resorption, inhibit calcium excretion from the kidney, and induce hypercalcemia. Patients with HHM often develop cachexia associated with typical symptoms such as anorexia, malaise, nausea, constipation, polyuria, polydipsia, and confusion. The etiology of the cachexia is not fully understood but is thought to be caused by hypercalcemia and v

Familial hypomagnesemia with hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis.

Very few patients with familial hypomagnesemia, hypercalciuria and nephrocalcinosis have been described. Information about clinical course, familial studies or evolution after renal transplantation is very scant. We have studied eight patients with this syndrome who belong to five different families. The mean age at diagnosis was 15 +/- 7 years (5 to 25 years). The primary clinical data were polyuria-polydipsia (8 cases), ocular abnormalities (5), recurrent urinary tract infections (5) and recurrent renal colics with stone passage (2). Bilateral nephrocalcinosis was observed in all cases. Ever

Feedstock-dependent biochar properties shape short-term soil CO2 emissions through microbial enzyme-associated processes beyond the effect of soil pH in black soil.

Black soils represent globally important reservoirs of soil organic carbon (SOC), yet the mechanisms regulating short-term carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions following biochar amendment remain poorly understood. Although biochar-induced alkalization has been widely proposed as a key mechanism influencing soil carbon mineralization, whether increased soil pH alone can explain feedstock-dependent CO2 responses remain unresolved. Here, we investigated the effects of biochars derived from six feedstocks on CO2 emissions, soil chemical properties, microbial functional traits, and extracellular enzyme a

Serum activin A and bone metabolism in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

UNLABELLED: Activin A, which promotes osteoclast differentiation, increases with declining kidney function, but its role in bone metabolism in kidney failure remains unclear. We found that higher activin A levels were associated with increased bone turnover markers, independent of parathyroid hormone levels. PURPOSE: Activin A, produced by various cells including bone marrow stromal cells, immune cells, and osteoblasts, is thought to promote osteoclast differentiation. Serum activin A levels rise with declining kidney function, but its role in bone metabolism in kidney failure remains incompl

Dual-phase chitosan incorporation in alginate/Fe(III) hydrogel beads: Multi-scale spectroscopic evidence for gradient-confined phosphate precipitation and implications for adsorbent design.

Phosphorus overloading drives eutrophication in aquatic environments, and reducing phosphate to low concentrations remains a central challenge for water treatment. The rational design of high-performance biopolymer-based adsorbents requires a mechanistic understanding of how hydrogel microstructure governs ion immobilisation, yet such understanding remains incomplete for chitosan (CS)/sodium alginate (SA) systems, where phosphate capture has largely been attributed to generic electrostatic and ligand-exchange models. Here, we propose a dual-phase chitosan incorporation strategy, in which CS is

Synergistic effects of multi-enzyme supplementation on nutrient digestion and absorption in the foregut and hindgut.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary multi-enzyme (MCPC) supplementation on synergistically enhancing the functions of both the foregut and hindgut, ultimately improving the nutrient digestion and utilization throughout the gastrointestinal tract. In vitro results demonstrated that MCPC increased the phosphorus and reducing sugar levels in the supernatant during enzymatic hydrolysis. Furthermore, during the fermentation of the enzymatic hydrolysis products, MCPC significantly increased the FRD0 value of the enzymatic hydrolysis products from both the positive control (

Analytical study, environmental risk assessment, and toxicity-based bioassays of effluents from phosphate fertilizer industry: a case study in Gafsa mining basin (SW Tunisia).

The phosphate fertilizer industry (PFI) in M'dhilla-Gafsa, Tunisia, discharges untreated effluents, creating environmental concerns due to unknown composition and toxic effects, leading to potential ecological and human health risks. This study characterized wastewater from three sampling points (SP1, SP2, SP3), and revealed their high acidity pH (2-3) and salinity (32.5-96.23 g/L). BOD5/COD ratios indicated the high recalcitrance (0.01-0.1) of the effluents, reflecting their low biodegradability and persistence in the environment. Excessive levels of phosphorus (206-2094 mg/L), fluoride (154-

Improved salinity and dust stress tolerance in the desert halophyte Haloxylon aphyllum by halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria.

Because of global warming, desertification is increasing. One of the best strategies for combating desertification is reforestation of forests and biological operations of vegetation. However, events like soil salinity and dust storms, as the most important manifestations of desertification, prevent vegetation from settling in these areas. In this study, the effects of two halotolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacterial strains, Bacillus pumilus HR and Zhihengliuella halotolerans SB, on physiological and nutritional status of the desert halophyte Haloxylon aphyllum under the stress of salin
