Increasing the understanding of how metal ions/complexes react in situ will allow for the improved specificity and controlled toxicity of novel synthetic metallocompounds that will be used as inhaled diagnostics or therapeutics. Our previous work showed that inhalation of select metals (e.g., chromium, vanadium, nickel, iron) caused alterations in lung immune cell function and in local bacterial resistance. The data also suggested that variations in the degree of immuno-modulation induced were not solely dependent on the amount of metal deposited in the lung, but also on the specific compound.

Molluscum contagiosum is a common childhood condition, and although it is self-limited, treatments are often prescribed. Several medications are available, but there is no consensus regarding the optimal choice in the pediatric population. We report a child who underwent potassium hydroxide 5% treatment resulting in superficial diffuse erosions caused by the inappropriate application. This underlines the importance of parent education before use of this medication with well-known caustic properties.

Heterozygous activating mutations of KCNJ11 (Kir6.2) are the most common cause of permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM), and successful glycemic control has been obtained in several cases with oral sulfonylureas (SU). We have verified a lack of clinical response for both glycemic control and neurological features in an infant with permanent neonatal diabetes mellitus and DEND syndrome due to a V59A mutation in the KCNJ11 gene. Thus, our case reinforces that most cases with DEND syndrome are insensitive to SU.
