Evolving prosocial and sustainable neighborhoods and communities.

In this review, we examine randomized controlled trials of community interventions to affect health. The evidence supports the efficacy of community interventions for preventing tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use; several recent trials have shown the benefits of community interventions for preventing multiple problems of young people, including antisocial behavior. However, the next generation of community intervention research needs to reflect more fully the fact that most psychological and behavioral problems of humans are interrelated and result from the same environmental conditions. Behavior modification of aggressive children in child welfare: evaluation of a combined intervention program.

Children and adolescents with aggressive disorders are prevalent in child welfare settings. Therefore, the assumption is that child welfare services would benefit from a cognitive-behavioral intervention. This study investigates whether implementation of the training with aggressive children (TAC) could improve the outcome of child welfare. Twelve children (average age 10 years), diagnosed with an oppositional defiant disorder or a conduct disorder, are treated either with a child welfare program or with a combined intervention of child welfare program and TAC. Before and immediately after com

Associations between clinic-referred boys and their fathers on childhood inattention-overactivity and aggression dimensions.

The question asked in this study of 70 clinically referred 6- to 12-year-old boys with behavior problems was whether or not childhood inattention-overactivity and aggression are transmitted specifically from biological fathers to sons. Fathers' self-reported childhood inattention-overactivity on a retrospectively valid measure was exclusively associated with parents' ratings of their sons' current attention problems on the Mothers' Operational Measure for Subgrouping (MOMS), the Revised Child Behavior Checklist (RCBCL), and an approximated DSM-IV inattention dimension. Fathers' self-reported c

Distinct neural bases of disruptive behavior and autism symptom severity in boys with autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Disruptive behavior in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is an important clinical problem, but its neural basis remains poorly understood. The current research aims to better understand the neural underpinnings of disruptive behavior in ASD, while addressing whether the neural basis is shared with or separable from that of core ASD symptoms. METHODS: Participants consisted of 48 male children and adolescents: 31 ASD (7 had high disruptive behavior) and 17 typically developing (TD) controls, well-matched on sex, age, and IQ. For ASD participants, autism symptom severity, disruptive be

Pharmacological and behavioral treatment of pediatric migraine and tension-type headache.

The problem concerning the treatment of pediatric headache has been the object of several recent reports. Some of the same medications used to treat adult headache problems are also utilized with children but usually at smaller dosages and in different combinations. The recent application of behavioral approaches, in particular biofeedback, for treatment of children's headaches has been an effective alternative to drugs without the problematic and dangerous side effects of pharmacological treatments. The purpose of this review is to give some indications about the most common pharmacological t

[Predictive value of psychiatric symptoms in the preschool age for adjustment in school age].

This paper derives from a prospective cohort study conducted in Freiburg (Federal Republic of Germany) from 1979 to 1987 with 209 (follow-up outcome: 172) 3- to 5-year-olds. The "Behaviour-Screening Questionnaire," the "Children's Global Assessment Scale" and a thorough semi-standardized interview were used to identify behavior problems in the children. The results were analyzed in relation to life events, sex and socioeconomic status. They were compared with the findings in other studies. Most of the variables examined proved to be of low predictive value. The mood changes common in preschool

Dissociative symptoms in school-aged adopted children who experienced maternal separation and disruptive caregiving in infancy.

Amounting findings on maternal separation and early disturbed caregiving suggest that this type of early experience negatively influences socioemotional development and may be associated with behavioral and mental health problems in later life. Concerning previously published studies, we have assessed if maternal separation and disrupted caregiving before adoption in infancy could be related to heightened levels of dissociative symptoms and behavioral problems in middle childhood. We involved 30 children (sample S1) who had experienced maternal separation after birth and short-term institution

Attention, Externalizing, and Internalizing Problems of Youth Exposed to Parental Incarceration.

Few studies have examined the effects of parental incarceration (PI) on outcomes above and beyond other risk and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). The objectives of this study were to (1) the associations between PI and mental health problems (attention, externalizing, internalizing, and total behavioral problems) and (2) the mediating role of current socioeconomic status and cumulative ACEs. An observational and cross-sectional design was employed. Analyses included hierarchical multivariable linear regression modeling. The analytic sample included 613 adolescents (11-17 years). Child abuse in the context of intimate partner violence against women: the impact of women's depressive and posttraumatic stress symptoms on maternal behavior.

Intimate male partner violence against women has been recognized as an important public health problem, with a high impact on women's mental health, including depressive and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. However, fathers who have been involved in intimate partner violence (IPV) have an increased probability of being violent toward their children. The aim of this study was to assess the relation between the mental health status of abused women, their partner's violence toward the children, and their maternal behavior.

Medical management of patients with reflux esophagitis.

Medical management of reflux esophagitis includes physical manipulations, antacids, and antireflux medications (bethanechol and alginic acid). Their combined usage in the continuous dyspeptic and the problem case help "break the cycle," providing relief for long periods of time. Identification of possible inciting factors in cases of recurrence should be pointed out to the patient so that he will develop an instinctive antireflux behavior. The effect of this combined therapy on the pathophysiology and natural history of the disease remains to be determined.

Associations of chronotype with daytime functioning and obesity in elementary school children.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence linking chronotype to daytime functioning and obesity in elementary school-aged children remains limited. This study examined the associations between chronotype and sleepiness, emotional/behavioral problems, obesity, and morning vigilant attention. METHODS: Children from six elementary schools in Tokyo, Japan, were recruited. Chronotype was indexed by the sleep-corrected midpoint of sleep on free days (MSFsc). Outcomes included obesity, child-reported morning sleepiness, parent-reported daytime sleepiness, and emotional/behavioral problems assessed using the Strengths and

Short-term impacts of TV viewing on executive functions in children with reading difficulties: an eye tracking study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that watching fantastic TV programs immediately impacts typically developing children’s executive functions (EFs). TV program contents may have a different effect on children with reading difficulties (RDs) because of executive dysfunctions, which have not been studied yet. This study examined the short-term effects of fantastical and realistic TV content on visual attention and inhibitory control in children with RDs and typically developing (TD) peers, considering roles of age and behavioral/emotional problems. METHODS: Forty-seven boys aged 7.5–9.5 years (23 R

School, behavior and health-related difficulties in early adolescents with contraceptive consultation: a population-based study in eastern France.

BACKGROUND: Early adolescence (10-16 years) is a crucial period for physical, mental and cognitive development where a wide range of school, behavior and health-related difficulties may occur. These issues may be aggravated in adolescents with early affective/sexual live and contraceptive consultation. This study assessed the risk of school, behavior and health-related problems among younger boys and girls having a contraceptive consultation. Such knowledge would inform care providers about their main role in monitoring and caring adolescent problems. METHODS: This cross-sectional study inclu

Promoting Sleep Health Among Families of Young Children in Head Start: Protocol for a Social-Ecological Approach.

Inadequate or poor quality sleep in early childhood impairs social-emotional and cognitive function via effects on the developing brain and increases obesity risk via hormonal and endocrine effects. The prevalence of short sleep duration, behavioral sleep problems, and sleep-disordered breathing among children aged 3 to 5 years is 20% to 50%. Healthy sleep habits increase sleep duration and prevent behavioral sleep problems. Awareness of sleep-disordered breathing symptoms leads to its timely treatment. We designed a study that aims to empower families whose children are in early childhood pro

Counseling for health behavior change in people with COPD: systematic review.

Counseling has been suggested as a promising approach for facilitating changes in health behavior. The aim of this systematic review of counseling interventions for people with COPD was to describe: 1) counseling definitions, 2) targeted health behaviors, 3) counseling techniques and 4) whether commonalities in counseling techniques were associated with improved health behaviors. Ten databases were searched for original randomized controlled trials which included adults with COPD, used the term "counseling" as a sole or component of a multifaceted intervention and were published in the previou

Parent-referred problem three-year-olds: developmental changes in symptoms.

Parent-referred problem three-yr-olds whose externalizing problems had improved by age six were compared with children whose problems persisted and with controls on symptom ratings obtained from mothers at ages three, four and six. Children who improved and those with persistent problems were initially rated high on overactivity, concentration difficulties and disobedience. Improved youngsters did not differ initially from controls on ratings of peer problems and other signs of antisocial behavior but children with persistent problems did. Groups also showed differential patterns of developmen

The relation between social media use and novel psychoactive substance use among adolescents - the mediating role of internalizing and externalizing behaviors.

BACKGROUND: This study explores whether internalizing and externalizing behaviors mediate the association between adolescent social media use and novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use in Australia, addressing a gap where counterfactual mediation methods and NPS use have been rarely applied. METHODS: The study sample included 1605 adolescents from the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children. We assessed adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing problems using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Adolescent NPS use was evaluated by self-reported ever use of synthetic cannabis and
