Full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff of the shoulder: diagnosis with MR imaging.

The purpose of this study was to describe MR findings in full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff. Of 102 shoulders examined by MR imaging, 31 were found to have a full-thickness tendon tear at arthroscopy/bursoscopy (five shoulders) or open surgery (26 shoulders). All shoulders were imaged in oblique coronal and axial planes. MR images of the 102 shoulders were evaluated for (1) the presence of fluid in the subacromial and subdeltoid bursae; (2) abnormal signal of the supraspinatus, subscapularis, infraspinatus, and teres minor tendons; (3) interruption of tendon continuity and thinning of th

Magnetic resonance imaging of the shoulder in asymptomatic professional baseball pitchers.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the magnetic resonance imaging findings in both shoulders of asymptomatic professional baseball pitchers. Fourteen pitchers who were without significant prior injury underwent a blinded clinical assessment and magnetic resonance imaging of both shoulders. All images were interpreted by two experienced musculoskeletal radiologists. The appearance of the rotator cuff tendons was graded, with additional evaluation of the biceps, labrum, and osseous structures. Ten athletes were found to have stable shoulders and painless full range of motion. Clinically,

Complications observed following labral or rotator cuff repair with use of poly-L-lactic acid implants.

BACKGROUND: A variety of complications associated with the use of poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) implants, including anchor failure, osteolysis, glenohumeral synovitis, and chondrolysis, have been reported in patients in whom these implants were utilized for labral applications. We report on a large series of patients with complications observed following utilization of PLLA implants to treat either labral or rotator cuff pathology. METHODS: Patients who had undergone arthroscopic debridement to address pain and loss of shoulder motion following index labral or rotator cuff repair with PLLA implan

Prospective longitudinal analysis of postoperative shoulder function : a ten-year follow-up study of full-thickness rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff repair is associated with good short or mid-term results, but to date there have been no long-term functional outcome studies demonstrating durability of results over time. In most long-term studies, the results have been compared with those of historical controls or with those of other, short-term follow-up studies. The purpose of the present prospective study was to evaluate short and long-term shoulder function after surgical repair in a single population of patients in order to follow changes over time. METHODS: Thirty-three patients underwent surgery, performed b

A new test of resistance in the diagnosis of postero-superior rotator cuff tears.

The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic accuracy of a new clinical test for the diagnosis of subacromial impingement and full thickness postero-superior rotator cuff tears. One hundred and twenty patients who underwent arthroscopic treatment for acromioplasty or cuff repair were previously submitted to a new test of resistance. The test is performed in the standing position with the involved arm in 90 degrees abduction, 20 degrees -30 degrees anteposition and in external rotation (as for full-can test). Thus, the patient was invited to follow the way of a spiral drawn on a drawing s

Luxatio erecta humeri with humeral greater tuberosity fracture and axillary nerve injury.

Luxatio erecta humeri is the rarest type of glenohumeral dislocation, which has been reported to be associated with humeral fracture, rotator cuff tear and neurovascular injury. To our knowledge, a single-sided acute inferior glenohumeral dislocation associated with humeral greater tuberosity fracture and axillary nerve injury has not yet been reported. Here, we reported a traumatic first-time inferior shoulder dislocation from a construction worker who got hyperflexion of the left shoulder when fell and grasped the railing causing. The patient underwent traction counter-traction closed reduct

Suprascapular neuropathy: what does the literature show?

Suprascapular neuropathy remains a rare, albeit increasingly recognized, diagnosis. Despite its relatively low prevalence, it must be kept in the shoulder surgeon's mind as a potential cause of shoulder pain, particularly in patients where the history, physical examination, and imaging studies do not adequately explain a patient's symptoms or disability. Although challenging to identify, suprascapular neuropathy can be successfully treated. The current literature shows that the location and mechanism of nerve injury are the most important factors guiding management. Different treatment strateg

Golf injuries of the upper extremity.

Golf has demonstrated increasing popularity and with this heightened enthusiasm has come an increased awareness of the significant number of injuries associated with playing golf. While back injuries represent the most commonly injured specific body part, upper extremity injuries are most frequent overall and the most likely to result in loss of play. Patterns of injury differ based on level of play and time spent playing or practicing golf. Among golf professionals, the hand/wrist is the most commonly injured upper extremity structure. Among amateurs, the elbow is most commonly injured. The v

Shoulder biomechanics and muscle plasticity: implications in spinal cord injury.

After spinal cord injury, excessive burden falls on the upper extremity, especially the shoulder. Overall, 51% of persons with spinal cord injury have shoulder problems. Common shoulder problems in persons with spinal cord injury begin with muscle imbalance that can lead to glenohumeral instability, impingement disease, rotator cuff tears, and subsequent degenerative joint disease. These problems can be attributed to the functional demands placed on the shoulder that are specific to patients with spinal cord injury, including overhead activities, wheelchair use, and transfers. Despite preventi

Shoulder Arthrodesis.

Shoulder arthrodesis is an end-stage, salvage procedure for the glenohumeral joint and can provide a pain-free, stable shoulder with varying levels of function. Common indications include brachial plexus injury, chronic instability with rotator cuff and deltoid dysfunction, and failed shoulder arthroplasty. Multiple techniques are described, including intra-articular and extra-articular arthrodeses. Fusion can be accomplished with screw fixation, plate fixation, external fixation, and arthroscopic-assisted techniques. The optimal position of the arm is heavily debated in the literature, but th

Mg-Based Metal-Organic Framework-Modified MXene Nanozymes as a Comprehensive Therapeutic for Rotator Cuff Tear with Osteoporosis.

Rotator cuff tears (RCT) are one of the most common causes of shoulder joint pain and mobility disorders affecting the health of middle-aged and elderly patients. Although the arthroscopic repair can effectively suture the torn rotator cuff, the retear rate is still high, especially for patients with osteoporosis. Excessive oxidative stress, uncontrolled inflammatory infiltration Bone mass reduction, muscle atrophy, and fatty infiltration would gradually aggravate during the development of RCT, which would seriously hinder the effective repair of the repaired rotator cuff after arthroscopic su

Association between osteoporosis and rotator cuff tears: evidence from causal inference and colocalization analyses.

Osteoporosis is a known risk factor for rotator cuff tears (RCTs), but the causal correlation and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the impact of osteoporosis on RCT risk and investigate their genetic associations. Using data from the UK Biobank (n = 457 871), cross-sectional analyses demonstrated that osteoporosis was significantly associated with an increased risk of RCTs (adjusted OR [95% CI] = 1.38 [1.25-1.52]). A longitudinal analysis of a subset of patients (n = 268 117) over 11 years revealed that osteoporosis increased the risk of RCTs (adjusted HR [95%

A Validated Open-Source Shoulder Finite Element Model and Investigation of the Effect of Analysis Precision.

Understanding the loads and stresses on different tissues within the shoulder complex is crucial for preventing joint injury and developing shoulder implants. Finite element (FE) models of the shoulder joint can be helpful in describing these forces and the biomechanics of the joint. Currently, there are no validated FE models of the intact shoulder available in the public domain. This study aimed to develop and validate a shoulder FE model, then make the model available to the orthopaedic research community. Publicly available medical images of the Visible Human Project male subject's right s
