Dynamics of Interleukin-9 Producing Lymphocytes in Strongyloides ratti-Infected Mice.

Helminths infect a quarter of the human population and are controlled in the frame of a canonical type-2 immune response. Interleukin-9 is a cytokine with pleiotropic functions during type-2 immunity that can be produced by many different cells. Accumulating evidence suggest that IL-9 is of particular relevance in controlling intestinal helminth infections. Using mice infected with the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti, we showed previously that ejection from the intestine depends on IL-9 and IL-9-mediated activation of mucosal mast cells. Here we use IL-9 reporter mice to identify the re

Gastrointestinal effects of ivermectin treatment in rats infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of ivermectin treatment on gastrointestinal morphology and function after Strongyloides venezuelensis infection. Male rats composed Control (C), Parasitized (Sv), Ivermectin (IVM) and Parasitized and treated with Ivermectin (Sv/IVM) groups. IVM and Sv/IVM groups were subdivided according to IVM: single dose of 200 μg/kg (IVM1 and Sv/IVM1) or three repeated doses of 200 μg/kg at 24 h intervals (IVM3 and Sv/IVM3). First dose of IVM was administered after peak of infection. Eggs per gram (EPG), mean gastric emptying time (MGET), mean cecum arrival time (MCAT) and

Karyotype and reproduction mode of the rodent parasite Strongyloides venezuelensis.

SUMMARY Strongyloides venezuelensis is a parasitic nematode that infects rodents. Although Strongyloides species described to date are known to exhibit parthenogenetic reproduction in the parasitic stage of their life cycle and sexual reproduction in the free-living stage, we did not observe any free-living males in S. venezuelensis in our strain, suggesting that the nematode is likely to depend on parthenogenetic reproduction. We confirmed by cytological analysis that S. venezuelensis produces eggs by parthenogenesis during the parasitic stage of its life cycle. Phylogenetic analysis using ne

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection presenting as subacute small bowel obstruction following immunosuppressive chemotherapy for multiple myeloma.

We report the case of a 59-year-old Afro-Caribbean woman who presented with symptoms of anorexia, lethargy, abdominal distension and vomiting on the background of newly diagnosed multiple myeloma, treated with one cycle of cyclophosphamide-thalidomide-dexamethasone chemotherapy 20 days previously. A diagnosis of subacute bowel obstruction was made; however, the aetiology of the obstruction remained elusive. Common electrolyte abnormalities were excluded and a midline laparotomy revealed minimal intra-abdominal adhesions. Histological examination of a small bowel mesentery biopsy showed inflamm

Shiga toxin producing E coli bloodstream infection secondary to Strongyloides penetration through intestinal mucosa.

A 51-year-old woman with diabetes, who immigrated to the USA 22 years ago from Laos, was admitted to the hospital for evaluation of fever, abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. A workup for acute gastroenteritis revealed a positive stool PCR for Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli. Two sets of blood cultures drawn at admission were positive for E coli. A review of her previous medical records revealed the presence of eosinophilia, up to 20%, 14 years prior to that was never investigated. Therefore, stool samples were examined and two of three specimens were positive for Strongyloides ster

Tribendimidine and albendazole for treating soil-transmitted helminths, Strongyloides stercoralis and Taenia spp.: open-label randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Tribendimidine is an anthelminthic drug with a broad spectrum of activity. In 2004 the drug was approved by Chinese authorities for human use. The efficacy of tribendimidine against soil-transmitted helminths (Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura) has been established, and new laboratory investigations point to activity against cestodes and Strongyloides ratti. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In an open-label randomized trial, the safety and efficacy of a single oral dose of albendazole or tribendimidine (both drugs administered at 200 mg for 5- to 14-year-old c

Dissemination of Strongyloides stercoralis as an immune restoration phenomenon in an HIV-1-infected man on antiretroviral therapy.

We present a case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in an HIV-infected man, resulting in Escherichia coli meningitis after initiation of antiretroviral therapy. Recent evidence from studies of strongyloides development supports the concept that strongyloides dissemination in this case is an example of an immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome.

Soil-transmitted helminthiases and health behaviors among schoolchildren and community members in a west-central border area of Thailand.

The prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthic infections and health behaviors related to infections in schoolchildren and villagers of a community (4 hamlets) was studied in Hauy Kayeng subdistrict, Thong Pha Phum district, in the north of Kanchanaburi Province. The intestinal helminth infection rate of the schoolchildren was 15.6%. Hookworm infection was the most prominent (9.8%), followed by Trichuris trichiura (6.2%), and Ascaris lumbricoides (2.2%). The community showed higher prevalence rates and was infected with more types of intestinal helminths than the schoolchildren. Thirty-five poi
