OBJECTIVE: To test the role of an oncotic pressure gradient across the endothelial glycocalyx with respect to extravasation of fluid and colloids and development of tissue edema in a whole organ setting.
METHODS: We measured filtration in the intact coronary system of isolated guinea pig hearts, comparing colloid-free perfusion and perfusion with 1.67% albumin or 2% hydroxyethylstarch (oncotic pressures 5.30 vs. 11.10 mm Hg, respectively). Heparinase was used to alter the endothelial glycocalyx.

Monolayers of the human endothelial cell line ECV304 were compared with those from primary endothelial cells from human umbilical cord veins (HUVEC) for potential use as an assay system to investigate vasoactive mediator levels in dengue viral infections. BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study is to demonstrate the distribution and quantitative changes of alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) in rat sciatic nerve subsequent to mechanical injury. AGP is a serum protein, whose level rises after injury; hence the term "acute phase reactant." Two experiments were completed in which brains and spinal cords from lambs affected with spongy degeneration of the central nervous system (CNS) were analysed for water, sodium and potassium, as measures of cerebral oedema. An episode of acute pustular psoriasis in a middle-aged man was associated with cholestatic jaundice and followed by acute tubular necrosis. It is suggested that renal failure was due to oligaemia after the loss of albumin into and from the skin.
