Anti-beta2-glycoprotein I antibodies are considered as a specific marker for the antiphospholipid syndrome. We conducted a telephone survey in Houston in March 1983 to assess the level of aspirin use among children during the influenza season. We completed interviews of 200 households with 346 children aged 12 years or younger. Fifty-two percent of the 346 children experienced at least one acute illness in the preceding three months. A multicenter trial of Acyclovir was carried out in 50 immunodepressed patients. The dose used was 15 mg/kg/day for 5 days in herpes simplex and 30 mg/kg/day for 10 days in herpes zoster and chicken pox by three one-hourly intravenous infusion per day. Acyclovir had a clear cut effect in 42 cases, a partial effect in 1 case, no effect in 1 case, and its action could not be assessed in 6 cases. Some 800 profoundly deaf children from 4 Yoruba states in Nigeria were assessed and examined in an attempt to identify the causes of deafness in this part of West Africa. It was found that measles, meningitis and rubella were the three major preventible diseases causing deafness. Intracranial pressure has been monitored in ten patients with Reye syndrome. All of the patients were comatose and all were treated with dexamethasone, mannitol, hyperventilation, and multiple exchange transfusions. Five of these children are alive and well; five died.
