Synthesis of quaternized PAMAM-grafted magnetic carbon nanotubes as anion exchange adsorbent for highly efficient and rapid extraction of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs from environmental waters.

Extensive prescription and consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in humans and livestock medicines lead to their constant discharge into the natural waters posing deleterious ecological and health concerns. Considering their existence in water as anions, a new adsorbent containing a large proportion of quaternary ammonium groups for anion-exchange micro-magnetic solid phase extraction (AE-µ-MSPE) was designed and synthesized by grafting G2.0 of the poly(amidoamine) dendrimers (G2.0PAMAM) onto the magnetic carbon nanotubes (MCNTs) followed by quaternization with glycidol

Nano-enabled disruption of bacterial virulence and communication in plant pathosystems: emerging strategies for sustainable disease management.

Bacterial diseases are a major cause of crop losses worldwide, threatening food security and the sustainability of agricultural production. Traditional management practices heavily rely on antibiotics, resistant strains and copper-based compounds but their continued efficiency is hampered by antimicrobial resistance, ecological issues and rapid evolution of pathogens. Nano-enabled anti-virulence strategies offer a novel approach that specifically targets bacterial virulence instead of the killing of the pathogens alone, which can potentially reduce the pressure for resistance development. This

Development of a 3D-bioprinted wheat gluten-based scaffold functionalized with citric acid for cultured meat applications.

The commercial viability of cultivated meat depends on the development of edible, low-cost scaffolds that provide suitable biomechanical cues for cell maturation. This study developed and characterized a food-grade composite bioink based on wheat gluten (10.8% w/w), sodium alginate (6.5% w/w), and carboxymethylcellulose (3.2% w/w), functionalized with citric acid for 3D bioprinting. Two formulations were evaluated: Control (BC) and Modified with citric acid (BM). Rheological characterization confirmed a non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior (n = 0.14 to 0.22) for both groups, promoting shape f

Product-specific microbial community dynamics in egg-based processed foods: Integrated analysis of processing facility environments and retail products.

Egg-based processed foods are widely consumed under refrigerated or frozen conditions; however, microbial community dynamics across products and processing environments remain poorly characterized. Here, we integrated culture-dependent enumeration and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize microbial communities in commercially distributed egg garnish (n = 61) and rolled egg products (n = 109), as well as stage-resolved samples from a processing facility (n = 99). Both production lines originated from a common liquid whole egg input but diverged at the genus level along their respective proce

Strategies to substitute/reduce conventional nitrites and nitrates in processed meats, with particular focus on microbial safety: A review.

Nitrites and nitrates have been traditionally used during manufacturing of processed meats due to their antimicrobial action (especially against Clostridium botulinum), their antioxidant activity and their ability to develop the typical flavour and colour of these products. Concerns about N-nitrosamines and an increased risk of cancer have motivated research on reducing levels of these compounds, using alternative substances and non-thermal technologies. The maximum permitted levels within the European Union have been reduced according to the most recent European Commission Regulation 2023/210

Dietary Terpenoids in Advancing Biofilm-Mediated Cancer Prevention: Antibiofilm Cascade, Molecular Crosstalk, and Nano-Facilitated Functional Delivery.

The role of microbes in cancer is gaining attention these days, especially in the context of tumor-associated biofilms and dysbiotic microbiota. Biofilm-producing microorganisms, such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Helicobacter pylori, trigger oncogenic inflammation and immune evasion in tumor initiation and progression, and in the development of chemoresistance, through the activation of the NF-κB, STAT3, and β-catenin pathways. Dietary terpenoids are a structurally diverse group of antitumor and antibiofilm plant metabolites. Monoterpenoids, sesquiterpenoids, and triterpenoids are known to i

Subcutaneously administered anti-PD-(L)1 antibodies are predominantly absorbed via the lymphatic system, resulting in high drug exposure to draining lymph nodes.

Compared to classic intravenous (IV) administration, subcutaneous (SC) delivery of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) offers new opportunities to improve patient compliance and healthcare efficiency. However, insufficient understanding of drug absorption process following SC administration, particularly the role of lymphatic transport, may hinder the development of SC formulations for mAbs. The current study aimed to examine the absorption route of widely used anti-PD-(L)1 mAbs following SC injection, and four marketed products (Pembrolizumab, Tislelizumab, Envafolimab, Sugemalimab) were selected as

Levothyroxine malabsorption following sleeve gastrectomy.

SUMMARY: Oral levothyroxine (LT4) is prescribed worldwide for hypothyroidism. Bariatric surgery for patients with obesity has shown a substantial, long-term weight loss and considerable improvement of obesity-related diseases. LT4 malabsorption represents a significant cause of refractory hypothyroidism, well known after malabsorptive bariatric surgery such as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. However, few studies have shown an increase in oral LT4 needed after sleeve gastrectomy. We present a 47-year-old woman with class III obesity and a history of papillary thyroid cancer, with an excellent biochem

Lignin nanoparticles as Pickering stabilizers: Emulsion engineering through physicochemical design and meta-analysis.

This review systematically examines the principal physicochemical parameters that govern the formation, stability, and properties of Pickering emulsions stabilized by lignin nanoparticles (LNPs). We consider the role of particle size, charge and concentration, oil volume fraction, as well as emulsification variables (pH and shearing method). We demonstrate the broad applicability of fundamental physical chemistry principles in explaining the long-term stability of LNP-stabilized Pickering emulsions. LNPs with diameters of 25-50 nm, at concentrations between 0.2 and 2 wt%, generally yield emuls

Transdermal delivery of antibacterial peptides in the management of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is of major public concern around the globe that arises when bacteria which earlier responded to the antibiotic therapy no longer respond to the same therapy and become resistant. The AMR has emerged due to the antibiotic abuse resulting in the development of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The conventional antibiotics including vancomycin have nowadays become ineffective due to the gradual evolution and adaptation of bacteria to the surrounding environment. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) h
