Neuropsychological deficits in abstinent cocaine abusers: preliminary findings after two weeks of abstinence.

Sixteen subjects hospitalized for treatment of cocaine dependence were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests within 72 h of last cocaine use and again approximately 2 weeks later. Twenty-one non-cocaine using control subjects, matched for age, gender, ethnicity and education, also received neuropsychological testing. Abstinence from mood altering substances during the 2-week study period was verified for both groups on three occasions using quantitative urine analysis. The results suggest that recent cocaine use is associated with impairment in memory, visuospatial abilities, and

Visualization and detection of ciliary beating frequency in human airway organoids based on image correlated methods for drug screening.

Respiratory ciliary motion is critical for airway hygiene, as its directional beating clears pathogens and debris. Dysfunctional cilia lead to mucus buildup, infections, and worsened respiratory diseases. However, studying ciliary dynamics remains challenging due to technical limitations in imaging and analysis. To address this, human airway organoids expressing specific biomarkers were cultured, and ciliary motility was captured using a charge-coupled device camera. Wavelet transform-based image processing reduced background noise and enhanced cilia contours, enabling color visualization and

[Artificial intelligence in sleep analysis (ARTISANA)--modelling visual processes in sleep classification].

We describe a novel approach to the problem of automated sleep stage recognition. The ARTISANA algorithm mimics the behaviour of a human expert visually scoring sleep stages (Rechtschaffen and Kales classification). It comprises a number of interacting components that imitate the stepwise approach of the human expert, and artificial intelligence components. On the basis of parameters extracted at 1-s intervals from the signal curves, artificial neural networks recognize the incidence of typical patterns, e.g. delta activity or K complexes. This is followed by a rule interpretation stage that i

Classifying Chinese children with dyslexia by dual-route and triangle models of Chinese reading.

This present study focuses on classifying developmental dyslexia by combining two famous models, the dual-route model and the triangle model of Chinese reading, re-examining validity of the subtypes, and observing the error types of word recognition for each subtype. Sixty-sixth graders with dyslexia in Chinese and 45 sixth graders who were matched by age and IQ with the dyslexic group were involved in the present study. Twelve (20%) sixth graders from the dyslexic group were classified as having phonological dyslexia, 11 (18.3%) were classified as surface dyslexia, 12 (20%) were classified as

Relationship between cognitive function and functional outcomes in remitted major depression.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have focused on functional impairment in depressed patients during symptomatic remission. The exact relationship between cognitive performance and functional outcomes of patients with Major depressive disorder (MDD) remains unclear. METHODS: Participants diagnosed with MDD were included and interviewed at both baseline and follow-up. Cognitive function was assessed during acute episodes using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), which targeted attention (Rapid Visual Processing - RVP), visual memory (Pattern Recognition Memory - PRM), and e

Eye gaze during face processing in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic syndrome with high risk for the development of psychiatric disorder. There is interest in identifying reliable markers for measuring and monitoring socio-emotional impairments in 22q11DS during development. The current study investigated eye gaze as a potential marker during a face-processing task in children and young adolescents with 22q11DS. METHOD: Eye gaze and behavioral correlates were investigated in 26 subjects (aged 8 to 15 years) with 22q11DS during the Jane Task, which targets featural and configural face processi

Emotional valence of words modulates the subliminal repetition priming effect in the left fusiform gyrus: an event-related fMRI study.

The present study investigated if the emotional valence of words modulates the subliminal repetition priming effect in the brain, in particular, the occipitotemporal visual cortex, by adopting a rapid presentation event-related fMRI design. A masked repetition priming paradigm was adopted, in which, before the presentation of the target (either positive or negative or neutral in meaning), a masked prime word that was either a repetition or an unrelated word of the target was presented. The subject made a perceptual judgment on the target. The results revealed that the left mid-fusiform gyrus w

The neural substrates of visual implicit memory: do the two hemispheres play different roles?

Identification of visually presented words is facilitated by implicit memory, or visual priming, for past visual experiences with those words. There is disagreement over the neuro-anatomical substrates of this form of implicit memory. Several studies have suggested that this form of priming relies on a visual word-form system localized in the right occipital lobe, whereas other studies have indicated that both hemispheres are equally involved. The discrepancies may be related to the types of priming tasks that have been used because the former studies have relied primarily on word-stem complet

Multiple cognition associated multimodal brain networks in major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder frequently leads to cognitive impairments, significantly affecting patients' quality of life. However, the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive deficits remain unclear. This study aimed to explore multimodal imaging biomarkers associated with cognitive function in major depressive disorder. Five cognitive scores (sustained attention, visual recognition memory, pattern recognition memory, executive function, and working memory) were used as references to guide the fusion of gray matter volume and amplitude of the low frequency fluctuation. Social function wa

Functional connectivity changes resemble patterns of pTDP-43 pathology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

'Resting-state' fMRI allows investigation of alterations in functional brain organization that are associated with an underlying pathological process. We determine whether abnormal connectivity in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in a priori-defined intrinsic functional connectivity networks, according to a neuropathological staging scheme and its DTI-based tract correlates, permits recognition of a sequential involvement of functional networks. 'Resting-state' fMRI data from 135 ALS patients and 56 matched healthy controls were investigated for the motor network (corresponding to neuropath

Feed-forward hierarchical model of the ventral visual stream applied to functional brain image classification.

Functional brain imaging is a common tool in monitoring the progression of neurodegenerative and neurological disorders. Identifying functional brain imaging derived features that can accurately detect neurological disease is of primary importance to the medical community. Research in computer vision techniques to identify objects in photographs have reported high accuracies in that domain, but their direct applicability to identifying disease in functional imaging is still under investigation in the medical community. In particular, Serre et al. (: In: IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and P

Hereditary prosopagnosia (HPA): the first report outside the Caucasian population.

Prosopagnosia (PA) or face blindness is characterized by a deficiency in identifying familiar faces. Almost all reports are single cases or collections of unrelated patients who acquired prosopagnosia after brain injuries, strokes or atrophy of at least the right occipito-temporal cortex. Until 2001, the inborn form - in the absence of any brain lesions - was described in fewer than 20 probands exclusively of Caucasian origin. We recently found that in the German Caucasian population, congenital prosopagnosia has a very high prevalence of at least 2.5% and that it is genetically determined. It

Ensemble of deep learning and IoT technologies for improved safety in smart indoor activity monitoring for visually impaired individuals.

Old and vision-impaired indoor action monitoring utilizes sensor technology to observe movement and interaction in the living area. This model can recognize changes from regular patterns, deliver alerts, and ensure safety in case of any dangers or latent risks. These solutions improve quality of life by promoting independence while providing peace of mind to loved ones and caregivers. Visual impairment challenges daily independence, and deep learning (DL)-based Human Activity Recognition (HAR) enhances safe, real-time task performance for the visually impaired. For individuals with visual impa

Visual processing of complex social scenes in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome: Relevance for negative symptoms.

Current explanatory models of negative symptoms in schizophrenia have suggested the role of social cognition in symptom formation and maintenance. This study examined a core aspect of social cognition, namely social perception, and its association with clinical manifestations in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a genetic model of schizophrenia. We used an eye-tracking device to analyze developmental trajectories of complex and dynamic social scenes exploration in 58 participants with 22q11DS compared to 79 typically developing controls. Participants with 22q11DS showed divergent patterns o

Activation Patterns throughout the Word Processing Network of L1-dominant Bilinguals Reflect Language Similarity and Language Decisions.

A crucial aspect of bilingual communication is the ability to identify the language of an input. Yet, the neural and cognitive basis of this ability is largely unknown. Moreover, it cannot be easily incorporated into neuronal models of bilingualism, which posit that bilinguals rely on the same neural substrates for both languages and concurrently activate them even in monolingual settings. Here we hypothesized that bilinguals can employ language-specific sublexical (bigram frequency) and lexical (orthographic neighborhood size) statistics for language recognition. Moreover, we investigated the

Skin-Conformal Inertial Sensing Interface for Continuous Silent Speech Recognition.

Silent speech interfaces offer a promising route for restoring communication without phonation; however, existing approaches are often limited by environmental sensitivity, rigid sensor mechanics, and dependence on fixed sentence classes. Here, we present a skin-conformal inertial sensing interface for continuous silent speech recognition from lip articulation. Commercial inertial measurement units are integrated onto a soft substrate through laser-patterned oxidized gallium-indium interconnects, enabling stable electrical performance under mechanical deformation and intimate coupling to dynam

A comparative analysis of cognitive profiles and white-matter alterations using voxel-based diffusion tensor imaging between patients with Parkinson's disease dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies.

BACKGROUND: Despite clinical and neuropsychological similarities between Parkinson's disease dementia (PDD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), recent studies have demonstrated that structural and pathological changes are more severe in DLB than in PDD. METHODS: 19 patients with probable PDD and 18 patients with probable DLB who had a similar overall severity of dementia and demographic characteristics were examined by a standardised neuropsychological test and voxel-based analysis of fractional anisotropy (FA) using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). RESULTS: The patients with DLB performed s

Normal azygos arch: retrotracheal visualization on frontal chest tomograms.

Anteroposterior, linear tomograms of 78 adult subjects in the supine position revealed visualization of pleural reflections off the retrotracheal part of the normal azygos arch in 38 (49%). The course of the arch varied by about 3 cm. Five distinct patterns were found, mainly depending on the course of the inferior margin of the arch. The inferior margin varied from relatively superior retrotracheal positions to intermediate positions appearing to intersect the carina, to relatively inferior and right-sided positions posterior to the proximal right main bronchus. Recognition of these normal va

eXCube2: Explainable Brain-Inspired Spiking Neural Network Framework for Emotion Recognition from Audio, Visual and Multimodal Audio-Visual Data.

This paper introduces a biomimetic framework and novel brain-inspired AI (BIAI) models based on spiking neural networks (SNNs) for emotional state recognition from audio (speech), visual (face), and integrated multimodal audio-visual data. The developed framework, named eXCube2, uses a three-dimensional SNN architecture NeuCube that is spatially structured according to a human brain template. The BIAI models developed in eXCube2 are trainable on spatio- and spectro-temporal data using brain-inspired learning rules. Such models are explainable in terms of revealing patterns in data and are adap
