Behavioral and brain functional characteristics of children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder and anxiety trait.

The current study aimed to explore the behavioral, daily-life executive functional, and brain functional connectivity patterns in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and anxiety. A total of 246 children with non-comorbid ADHD and 91 healthy controls (HCs) participated in the current study, among whom 175 subjects went through resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scans. The ADHD participants were divided into two subgroups: ADHD with a high level of anxiety (ADHD + ANX) and ADHD with a low level of anxiety (ADHD-ANX). The Child Behavior Checklist

Psychological Manifestations of Celiac Disease Autoimmunity in Young Children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Psychological symptoms can be associated with celiac disease; however, this association has not been studied prospectively in a pediatric cohort. We examined mother report of psychological functioning in children persistently positive for tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies (tTGA), defined as celiac disease autoimmunity (CDA), compared with children without CDA in a screening population of genetically at-risk children. We also investigated differences in psychological symptoms based on mothers' awareness of their child's CDA status. METHODS: The Environmental Det

Prevalence of Sleep Abnormalities in Indian Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is on the rise. Apart from the core behavioral issues of impaired communication, impaired social interaction, and restricted and/or repeated behavioral phenotype, comorbidities like sleep problems are increasingly getting recognized as important determinants of management and overall quality of life. METHODS: This study was conducted in a tertiary care teaching hospital in northern India over a two year period. Children diagnosed with ASD and normally developing children (control subjects) aged 3 to 10 years were enrolled in the stu

Longitudinal synergies between cortisol reactivity and diurnal testosterone and antisocial behavior in young adolescents.

The aims were to identify the correspondence between simultaneous, longitudinal changes in cortisol reactivity and diurnal testosterone and to test the hypothesis that cortisol reactivity and diurnal testosterone interact so as to influence antisocial behavior. Participants were 135 children and young adolescents assessed at 6-month intervals over 1 year. Upon enrollment girls were age 8, 10, or 12 years (N = 69, M = 10.06 years) and boys were age 9, 11, or 13 years (N = 66, M = 10.94 years). Assessments included Tanner staging by a nurse, cortisol reactivity (Trier Social Stress Test for Chil

Violence exposure and health related risk among African American adolescent female detainees: A strategy for reducing recidivism.

Juvenile crime and violent victimization continue to be significant social problems (Fitzpatrick, Piko, Wright, & LaGory, 2005); in that, adolescents, females in particular, are likely to participate in health related risk behaviors as result of having been victimized or exposed to a violent environment. Specifically, abuse, neglect, sexual molestation, poverty, and witnessing violence are well known risk factors for the development of trauma-related psychopathology and poor outcomes relative to delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse, and HIV risk behaviors (Steiner, Garcia, & Matthews, 1997). Parental Mental Health and Hostility Are Associated With Longitudinal Increases in Child Internalizing and Externalizing Problems During COVID-19.

Children are at high risk for negative COVID-19 related outcomes. The present longitudinal study assessed (1) changes in child internalizing and externalizing problems from before to during the pandemic and (2) whether parent mental health (depression, anxiety, stress) or parenting behavior during COVID-19 were associated with changes in child mental health problems. Sixty eight mother-child dyads participated in this study. Children were approximately five years-old at the time of enrollment and were between the ages of 7-9 years old at the time of the follow-up survey. Parenting behavior, pa

A syndemic of psychosocial health problems is associated with increased HIV sexual risk among Nigerian gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM).

Nigerian gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) experience negative psychosocial health problems, which may increase their risk for HIV infection. Few studies have explored the syndemic effect of co-occurring psychosocial health problems on HIV sexual risk among Nigerian GBMSM. We investigated the co-occurrence of syndemic psychosocial health problems and their synergistic effect on HIV risk behaviors. We assessed depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol dependence, tobacco use, and hard-drug use. The outcome variables were the number of male sexual partn

Sleep as a viable target for early intervention in children with autism spectrum disorder: A narrative review informed by a systematic literature search.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by communication and social challenges, and repetitive behaviors. Early integrated developmental and behavioral interventions are recommended, ideally during peak brain development at ages 2-4. Sleep problems are common in autistic children and may appear before diagnosis. This narrative review, informed by a systematic literature search, examines how sleep disturbances affect neurodevelopment in young children with ASD and whether treatment of sleep problems may enhance response to developmental intervention. We conducted

Co-occurrence between eating disorder symptoms and addictive behaviors among adult women: a controlled analysis.

BACKGROUND: While associations between abnormal eating behaviors and attitudes (AEBs) and addictive behaviors have been explored, existing research does not adequately control for confounding variables, leaving the possibility of spurious correlations. Therefore, this study aims to provide clearer insights by examining the relationships between anorexic and bulimic symptoms (i.e., drive for thinness and binge eating) and specific addictive behaviors, while controlling for psychological distress and multiple addictive behaviors. METHODS: Using a sample of 2,000 adult women, the participants se

Attachment and behavioral addictions in adolescents: The mediating and moderating role of coping strategies.

Gambling, video gaming, and Internet use are typically included as everyday activities that could potentially become behavioral addictions. There is growing evidence that views non-substance related addictions as coping mechanisms, and considers that attachment styles are likely to play a pivotal role on the development of such addictions, especially on young people. Therefore, the present study aimed to: (1) explore the association between attachment, coping, and behavioral addictions (i.e., gambling disorder, video game addiction, and problematic Internet use); and (2) to analyze the mediati

Studying alcohol teratogenesis from the perspective of the fetal alcohol syndrome: methodological and statistical issues.

Alcohol is a teratogenic drug and the effects appear to be grossly dose related. The severest effects are observable clinically as the fetal alcohol syndrome and are associated with heavy prenatal alcohol exposure and a history of chronic maternal abuse of alcohol. Hypotheses for subtler behavioral effects associated with lower levels of exposure can be generated from observation of the behavioral effects in FAS. Behavioral effects associated with various levels of prenatal alcohol exposure in humans include poor sucking and poor habituation in the newborn, poorer mental and motor development

Acquisition, development, and maintenance of online poker playing in a student sample.

To date there has been very little empirical research into Internet gambling and none relating to the recent rise in popularity of online poker. Given that recent reports have claimed that students may be a vulnerable group, the aim of the current study was to establish basic information regarding Internet poker playing behavior among the student population, including various motivators for participation and predictors of problematic play. The study examined a self-selected sample of student online poker players using an online survey (n=422). Results showed that online poker playing was under

Oral contraceptive use among African American adolescents: individual and community influences.

Side effects of oral contraceptives are a noteworthy problem, particularly among low-income young women who reside in inner-city communities. The problem may be compounded by inadequate family planning services, particularly when such services are provided by general medical practices with high volumes of clients. This study examined the prevalence and correlates of pill-related side effects, with particular attention to the role of clinic characteristics. Participants were 177 pregnant and parenting African American adolescents and young women (average age = 18.34). The experience of a pill-r

A profile and prediction study of problem drinking among first-year medical students.

A study was conducted to determine to what extent first-year medical students are engaged in alcohol use and if specific sociocultural and self-reported behavior characteristics can be used to develop a profile and to predict potential problem drinkers. Four geographically distinct medical schools participated in the study, with a total of 341 students completing a questionnaire regarding current alcohol use and other risk-taking behaviors. Chi-square analyses, analyses of variance, and a discriminant analysis indicated that there is a high occurrence of frequent and heavy drinking among first

"Inflaming your neighbors": copycat firesetting in adolescents.

The objective of this article is to consider and discuss existing research and theory concerning copycat problem behaviors and copycat offending and how this may be applicable to populations of firesetting children and adolescents. The primary databases used to search for literature were PsychInfo, Medline, and Eric. Google Scholar was used as an additional Internet search engine. While the primary focus was on literature published since 1990, earlier literature considered to be important was also included. Qualitative and quantitative studies suggest that consumption of violent media affects …

Training, Deployment Preparation, and Behavioral Health of New York National Guard Personnel Deployed to Assist with COVID-19 Decedent Work.

INTRODUCTION: A small body of research conducted mostly among civilians has shown that adequate training and preparation can prevent or reduce the development of behavioral health problems in first responders. Several civilian studies have shown that social support is protective against behavioral health problems. However, very few studies have examined the impact of these factors on the behavioral health of military first responders. Military first responders, who serve in the aftermath of natural disasters and disease outbreaks such as the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, are of

Persistent infant crying and hyperactivity problems in middle childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether persistent infant crying is associated with an increased risk for externalizing behavior problems in childhood. METHODS: Sixty-four infants who were referred for persistent crying in infancy (PC; mean age: 3.8 +/- 1.3 months) were reassessed at 8 to 10 years of age and compared with 64 classroom controls (CC). The major outcome measure was pervasive hyperactivity or conduct problems defined as parent, child, and teacher ratings that across informants were within the borderline/clinical range according to the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ).
